What inspired you to start your own shoe line?

Being run by artist and designers the inspiration for JKM arose from our never ending need to create. Being from different fields we have a range of skills, techniques and expertise. We decided to fuse our skills to create JKM. Once we realized we could do this, the ideas flushed in! We discussed things we wanted to do and things that we would eventually do. jooti’s are only the beginning to our story Tell us more about Jooti Kapra Makaan?

The story starts with a young Faten, the girl that paints everything in sight. EVERYTHING. Her shoes, bags, beds, chairs, TV even her SISTER could not escape!

Here the three girls decided to step up the passion and decided to share it with the world JKM is a group of 3 artists and designers graduated from NCA Faten Anjum Suleman- Fine Arts Rabia Ayub Bhatti- Fine Arts Farea Khan- Architecture Based in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi What is the concept behind it?

It’s our project of bringing art to you in a more funky and quirky manner. Making it wearable; in the language Pakistanis love. Design is personal and each piece tells a story, of the creator and the user. Hand painted items have a familiarity and belonging that other things may not give you.

Here we are giving you the chance to express yourself by customizing your piece.

What trends do you keep in mind while designing your shoes?

Our aim was to create something new, something bold. There is a monopoly of the phool walay jootay. We love them no doubt about that, but we’ve all worn them for some time now. We’ve incorporated pop art, miniatures amongst other art styles into our designs. Some of our designs have been based on popular demands from the patrons. We have recreated the masters works in our own language such as ‘Mona Lisa’ or ‘Girl with the Pearl Earrings’ or in the case of ‘Guernica’ or ‘Venus’ we tried to keep the original essence as much as was possible.

What is one of the biggest challenges you faced in establishing Jooti Kapra Makaan?

We respect the arts to a degree that most do not under-

stand. There is a general lack of understanding that goes into painting a single shoe. We’re trying to ensure quality; we've imported paints and put in so much detail. A single shoe requires so much attention and may take 3-4 days of work. The fact that we’re designers and ‘purest’ at that; makes it all the more difficult.

Which one of your shoe designs is your favourite?

Their our babies, we love them all equally! Don't make us choose! But if we had to…

‘The Vitruvian Man’ has stolen our hearts, souls and everything in between.

What trends for clothes are your favourite to pair with your shoes?

JKM: Khussas are the perfect go to shoes for us. We wear them with our Easterns, Westerns and our fusions. They are worn formally and casually. No time or phase in life is complete without a khussa!

FAS: The shalwars are back! Nothing goes as natural as a khussa with Shalwar Kameez.

RAB: To me it goes perfectly with ghararas. So traditional and spunky!

FK: A casual pair of jeans; make it the highlight of your outfit!

Our readers would like to know a little about the trio behind Jooti Kapra Makaan. What career would you opt for if you weren't designing shoes?

FAS: I would’ve still been painting, just a different canvas.

RAB: I’d still be practicing arts one way or another.

FK: Designing homes.

What is one piece of advice you would want to give to all the people who wear your shoes?

To respect our babies. we put in a lot of work to make them perfect for you, each stroke, line dot is made to add character to your masterpiece. And to thank them for being patrons.

Any advice you'd like to give to an aspiring shoe designer?

Lol. This is our third month we need all the advice we can get!

1. she has seen me cry. I have seen her cry and we both are super ugly criers lol but most of the time we cannot shut up.

Rather she says " plan on hai baby" and you just there waiting and calling her and her phone is not responding 3. i secretly hate that she is getting married. my love is now being shared and she can't just give me enough time now.

4. i can never go on a diet when I'm with her. she always convinces me of cheating in the honour of we meeting each other.

5. i hate her so much when she promises she ll be picking me up in 2 mins and is only one signal away from my home when In real she is still thinking whether she should take a shower or no. ughh.

1. i trust her gut instincts more than my own. I usually ask her before taking any action in my life because she's proved to me countless times that her gut speaks in gold.

2. she still let's me borrow her clothes without question even though i ruined one of her favourite shirt 3. i love it how we've been crushing on the same people and she backs off when it's time to 4. she's quite versatile and has the most amazing sense of humour. We rarely fight. and even if we do, we learn from it and move on. I couldn't even imagine staying mad at her for longer than a day.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Where did you choose to go and why?

As we got married in January and both of us had seen most of the East Asian countries we decided to explore Europe together. And amongst Europe Italy was our choice for a short post wedding get away spot. Italy being in South was realtively warmer compared to other European countries but beautiful and rich in culture and history at the same time. We went to Italy in early March so the weather was quite pleasant.

Because I didn't get many days off from work, we only had 09 days to explore the country. We decided to see Rome, Venice and Milan only keeping rest of the cities for some time later.

We preferred staying at hotels in the city centre. They cost more but trust me all the tourist sites were accessible to us on foot. We didn't get to use a cab for traveling within city. • Rome: Hotel Cosmopolitan Rome • Venice: Hotel Al Ponte dei Sospiri Venice • Milan: Senato Hotel Milano

Suggest places for a perfect night out Especially if you're in Rome, you can explore the entire city on foot. Long walks, gelatos and cold weather would be a perfect way to spend the night.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind?

If you have time, do try Roman Spas.

1. Pick the right time to enjoy a unique moment at the Trevi Fountain. Try to go there at night!

Finally, any tips?

Grab the city maps right after landing in your city. They're extremely helpful!

Chill at the road side restaurants and gelato bars. They have some amazing food to offer
