HOME MAKEOVER BY HUNDAL HUSSAIN

I

t’s that time of the year again; the sun is out, the day is pleasant, the nights are fun and everything around us is beautiful, spring has officially begun! While everything looks great this season naturally, I feel like we need to up our game when it comes to fashion and style. More than our wardrobe, we should be focusing on our surroundings and our house; we need to match up with the liveliness of the season and here’s how we can spring up our house. It’s all about keeping things sleek this season; gone are the days of grand decors. Opt for sleeker, slimmer and more minimalistic designs that’ll look great in the summer too. A plain white smart sofa is a great thing to invest in, perfect for every season and extremely easy to customise; it is a little high maintenance, but nothing great ever comes easy. Simplistic coffee tables can be a great addition to your living room; they go fabulously with almost any sofa and they’re easy on the pocket too, so it’s a win-win! Perhaps the most important part of spring are the colours, who doesn’t love some colour in their life; so don’t hold back. Go for at least 3 or 4 colours in your living room; and make sure they’re light and bright, no black or brown this season. Peach is hands down the colour of the season and it makes the room pop and look much fresher; so make sure you have a vase of peach flowers set in the centre of the room. Blue and white is also a great combination to go for and you can add in some yellow or pink

to really take it up a notch. Coloured, funky cushions are your best friends this season, so keep them close! Less is more this season, when it comes to accessories; put away all the abundance of decorations and accents from winter and just focus on a few great ones. Your centre table should have no more than 3 accessories on it; but those pieces should be worth it! For your console, a pair of lamps and a coffee table books are all you need and some fresh flowers. Trays are a great accessory this season, put your accessories on a beautiful tray and place that on your coffee table; and remember to keep things colourful and lively. This season, you have way too many options to rock when it comes to material; everything looks great whether it’s wood or metals. White wooden pieces are always a good idea; metals can be a little tricky but if done right (read: minimalistic) they can really steal the show. Bird cages are a fabulous new home accessory, perfect for not just this season but maybe the whole year too, so keep an eye out for that. Spring shopping can be very exciting and to further increase the excitement and options for spring home decor, head over to Dolce Vita Home for some truly fabulous designs. Their Nouveau collection is the definition of spring spirit and you’ll definitely find some amazing lamps, trays, cushions, sofas and accessories there, so get ready to spring up!

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I went to the glorious land of the Ottoman Empire-Turkey! My trip spanned from architectural and design spoilt Istanbul. To the dark blissful waters of the Aegean Sea - Bodrum. Each place had its story! This is a country to get lost in. The culture is proud and diverse. Who did you travel with? I went with friends, exploring alone is never fun! Where did you stay? In Istanbul at the very trendy House Hotel in Vault Karokay. Their rooftop lounge has the most stunning views, interesting fact the architect who designed this hotel also did the busi-

ness class lounge at Istanbul airport- both equally stunners. In Bodrum I stayed at the kempinski- the views on that bay are so gorgeous, it's set to a side- so ultimate relaxation and they have a six senses spa at the resort. We spotted Nicole Kidman on a Yacht in front of the marina lounge at the resort. What are the best shopping spots there? For high street fashion I found Taksim to be super convenient- some of the Turkish shoe brands are amazing! For more luxurious items it's best to hit Nisantasi district. As a antique hunter I also hit the antique portion of the Grand Bazaar where I found some stunning objects, great open tea houses at the Bazaar as well.

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on If it's your first time, then to all the main sites in the city: Topaki Palace, The Hague Sophia, etc. But don't miss the streets in Istanbul, the art galleries and just walking in different areas. My favorite was walking the streets in the Jewish quarter. The homewares and furniture stores are too die for!!! Since baggage allowances are tight, you can ship stuff back, the stores organize it for you- super convenient.

Finally, any tips? Eat lots! Only take meter cabs that your hotel concierge gets for you (yes, you can call your concierge for a taxi anywhere in the city). Be prepared for massive language barriers, and bargain at the stores! They will try to rip you off! Please don't buy fakes!!! Their everywhere in the Grand Bazaar- that doesn't mean you need to support that awful industry! Get lots of sun, enjoy!

Suggest places for a perfect night out Head out for dinner to a seafood restaurant by the Bosporus and just soak in the atmosphere. If you want to party then be ready to be awake at crazy hours. They don't head out till 2am, I fell asleep one the one night I had planned to meet friends at the clubs :)

travel diaries

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Oh oh oh! You must head over to the Turkish bath house, either there will be a nice one at the resort or you can head to the one that your hotel recommends - I went twice to the most recommended one in the city called Pasha Hammam. It's near Karokay and is like going to a resort level spa. The Turkish bath experience is amazing and you come out super relaxed and glowing! You can opt for massages after the baths! Ultimate relaxation is so important!

travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? I would highly recommend Mikla and Munferit in Istanbul, both do modern takes on Turkish food- Mikla had some delicious seafood. In Bodrum I stayed on resort mostly - where they were six gorgeous restaurants. I did however step out one evening and managed to get a table (thank you concierge) at Roccadon - a thirty year old seafood restaurant in a corner at the Bodrum Marina that simply takes your breath away with each bite.

The start of this week is a great time to celebrate your famous self-starter attitude. On Monday, Tuesday, and the first part of Wednesday, you'll have an uncanny knack for initiating projects and getting things going (provided you can use your charms to keep others from feeling bowled over). From Wednesday afternoon through the end of Friday, expect some deep feelings to start roiling around inside. You'll be fine, but just make sure you don't direct those emotions outward -- keep them to yourself. This weekend, you're in charge. Adventure is everywhere, but you've got to take the lead.

Tired of the same old routine? You'll find a nice surprise as the week begins in the form of a schedule shake-up or some other small opportunity for selfindulgence. Monday and Tuesday (and even the first part of Wednesday) should provide great opportunities for goofing off and having fun. From the latter part of Wednesday and on into Friday, you might find yourself feeling more moody than usual, especially in a possessive way, so watch that jealousy. This weekend, be selective in the risks you take. Financial gambles probably won't pay off, but intellectual daring could deliver a huge philosophical payout.

As your week begins, cue up that actionmovie soundtrack! You'll need some good background music if you're going to keep up with all your high-flying adventures (and if you're lucky, you might even have some romance mixed in with any highspeed chases). By Wednesday afternoon, count on the tempo to slow back down. You'll find yourself more introverted than usual but more insightful too -- and you'll find it's time to put that intuition to work for others. This weekend, expect your best work to be teamwork. You'll be on top of your game mentally, but the added influence of a friend (or someone even closer?) can balance out your perspective.

Watch for trouble on the home front as the week begins! Monday, Tuesday, and the first part of Wednesday could all bring problems to your doorstep, and you'll need to use a lot of patience (along with your usual sympathy and kindness) to smooth things over. From Wednesday afternoon on into Friday, you'll feel a little uneasy emotionally, and you might have trouble finding your footing. Just be patient and trust good friends to guide your way -- or to give you some personal space, as needed. This weekend, get out of town (or just away from your usual crowd), and do something fun for yourself.

24July/23August

24August/23September

24September/23October

21March/20April

leo

You can do no wrong as the week begins -- everyone is on your side! On Monday, Tuesday and well into Wednesday, your commanding presence and charismatic communication skills are winning you converts, both friends and more than friends (if you're receptive to flirtatious attention right now). Starting with the latter half of Wednesday on through Friday, you'll find you've inherited some unusual insights. Use that new-found intuition wisely, and look for chances to help others. A big, bountiful burst of energy should carry you well through the weekend -- which is good, given the opportunities you'll find for adventure and romance.

21April/21May

virgo

Look at you! Everybody else is too, as you're unusually inclined to splash out and do something different as the week begins. Monday, Tuesday, and the early part of Wednesday should all present excellent opportunities for showing off. (Just don't be surprised if your impulsiveness leaves you feeling indecisive too.) From the latter part of Wednesday and on through Friday, you'll be back to your more controlled, analytical self -- but expect that to be tempered by an almost unquenchable curiosity. Let your intellectual inquisitiveness run rampant. This weekend, gracefully kick back and go with the flow (even if it seems like relaxing is a risk).

sagittarius capricorn 23November/21December

22December/20January

The big picture will become crystal clear as your week begins. Your longterm, long-range intuition is spot on right now, and Monday, Tuesday, and the first part of Wednesday you'll have a lot of fun and make big plans. From the latter half of Wednesday through Friday, your pace should start to slow back down -- your usual fun-loving self should downshift for some overdue introversion. Use this time to get a handle on what you really want. (Dreams could figure significantly.) This weekend, look for a good time with a good-sized group of people -- you'll have the best time surrounded by friends.

things started! Your ambitious spirit knows no bounds as the week begins. Monday, Tuesday, and the morning on Wednesday you're at your enthusiastic, entrepreneurial best. Everyone might not share your excitement, but they'll admire what you can get done. From Wednesday afternoon on through to Friday, you'll find yourself gifted with unusual perspective and planning skills. Use this boost to get organized and solidify any decisions you've been delaying. This weekend, ponder the big picture. What do you really want to be doing? You'll find answers -- and you'll feel the first inkling of the perseverance you need to make those plans happen.

22May/21June

libra

Feeling flirtatious? You'll be a dynamo of romance and unusual rowdiness as the week begins, and Monday, Tuesday, and the early part of Wednesday should provide you with countless chances for socializing and mixing things up. Enjoy all the attention -- and don't be surprised to find yourself rubbing shoulders with romance. From the latter part of Wednesday through Friday, expect your focus to shift from people to things. Use your trademark diplomacy to adjudicate and adjust as necessary, and try not to be too stingy with resources. This weekend, your intellect and ideas will have no equal. People will hang on your every (impressive) word.

22June/23July

scorpio

24October/22November

Expect storm clouds to loom on your mental horizon as the week begins. Subliminal unease has your emotions roiling, but that just means you need to take some time out for yourself. On Monday, Tuesday, and the first half of Wednesday, look for opportunities to tune out and turn inward. Decisions will come more quickly once you've had a chance to think. Later on Wednesday through Friday, your usual mysteriousness and personal magnetism will be magnified -- so don't be surprised to find yourself surrounded by admirers. This weekend, let yourself get caught up in the moment. (You can trust your instincts to keep you from going too far.)

aquarius

pisces

Do you ever stop making friends? As the week begins, your natural affability leads you to new people and new situations. Monday, Tuesday, and the first part of Wednesday provide plenty of opportunities for experiencing new things and making connections you normally wouldn't. From Wednesday afternoon on through to Friday night, you might find your mind drifting to thoughts of your career and big-picture ambitions. Don't be afraid to slow down and think these things through -- even if that means taking a break from your gregarious social schedule and finding some private time. This weekend, travel in a pack. Surround yourself with friends (and anyone you'd like to make a friend).

Out with the old; in with the new! As the week begins, you can solve problems in a partnership by simply embracing a fresh perspective. Monday, Tuesday, and the morning on Wednesday should present opportunities to settle disputes and improve relationships with others -- but only if you pick a new path to follow. From Wednesday afternoon on through to Friday, you might feel emotionally unsettled. Don't take this as a setback though -- it's just a chance to assert yourself and find your footing. (Even if that means fighting back.) This weekend, do the right thing. Follow your conscience, and you can expect to have luck on your side.
