In the Spotlight Juju Haider, Creative Director TONI&GUY Islamabad, talks to Paperazzi!

How would you define your personal style? I would say it’s very minimalistic. I like to keep it simple but love accessorising with something like a statement necklace or just adding a dark lipstick to complete the look. What’s the best thing anyone has ever said about your work? A dear client of mine flew all the way from New York to get a cut from me saying that she doesn’t trust anyone with her hair except me. It was very sweet and I was deeply touched.

Who are your fashion influences and inspirations? I’m a big fan of Vera Wang and Donna Karan, because I think they injected a different sensibility into women’s wear, moving away from the traditional to a new concept of the woman. In hair I’m a big fan of Paul Mitchell and Sasha Mascolo, Toni Mascolo’s daughter. What is your greatest fear? To lose my loved ones. What is something very few people know about you? I give an excellent massage. What do you like to do for fun? Spend time with my family, go out for dinner or catch a movie with friends. What do you wish you had more time for? Travelling with my kids.

What is your biggest strength as a stylist? It’s the amazing relationship that I have with my clients. It’s great how we can bond on a personal level and establish a comfort level. I like to know what they want when they walk into the salon without even having to ask me.

What’s your favorite holiday spot? Malta.

How would you define the fashion sense in Pakistan? I think it’s evolving. People are now becoming daring, they want to experiment with new things and are more accepting of new ideas. They want to go out there and try new things. It’s quite interesting actually, but it’s going to take some time for their fashion sense to mature.

Who is your favorite hero in fiction? Thomas the tank engine.

How would you describe your childhood? I had a fantastic childhood and I really wish I could give my children the same. What do you value most in your friends? Honesty and loyalty.

38

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

Who do you look up to? My father for his unbelievable strength and confidence and my mother for her values and beliefs.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I am very emotional so I would want to be able to have more emotional control. Who is your go to person for uncontrollable laughter fits? My cousin Deeda. What’s your favorite TV show? Downtown Abbey and Suits. Where would you like to be in 5 years? I like to see myself glorying in the great success of TONI&GUY Islamabad.

fantastical, unreal. For the protagonist, the connection is a spiritual one, and over time, it begins to heal him, prying his hardened heart open like a stubborn pomegranate.

Ghosts in Shells SONYA REHMAN This year in January, I wrote a column about intimacy (for these very pages) and how the notion of it is fast becoming the Holy Grail of our times, the unreachable, yet ultimate need/desire of our emotionally flailing generation. I’ve been thinking about it, quite a bit actually. Intimacy and connection, i.e. And then, just the other day I watched a brilliant movie called ‘Her,’ that blew me away. Okay, it didn’t blow me away per say, but its overall storyline did manage to have a deep impact on me. I’m not going to give too much away, however, *spoiler alert: the movie is about an ordinary, sensitive guy who feels too much, goes through a terrible break-up and then finds solace and love, real love, in something 40

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

The reason why I feel the movie will resound with a lot of us, us 20-30-somethings, caught up in familial and societal demands/ pressures, is because, I think, we’re currently going through a terrible, extended patch of isolation, alienation. And you know what? Some of us don’t even realize how isolated we really are. The sad part is this: the pace of the world has made us lose ourselves in this nasha of time and routine. We’re constantly projecting into the future, more than ever. That hollow, self-satisfying thought of; yes, tomorrow, tomorrow’s another day to make it work – tomorrow I’ll be the happiest I’ve ever been. The present doesn’t even count anymore. And because we’re so connected, plugged and tuned in to ourselves, thanks to our damn phones, scrolling through email, Facebook, and other social media platforms, the conversation is not shared anymore. We’re living in our heads more than ever before. And we’re full of it – full of ourselves. Having conversations with ourselves, in intimate relationships with no one but ourselves. And that’s why it has become so difficult to extend ourselves, open ourselves to external events that require, heck, demand emotion, a reaction. But the thought is terrifying. The public display of emotion. Good old heart to heart communication: frightening. Emotional depth, what’s that? I’m not a wuss, I’m an emotionally stable man/woman of the world! Real emotion is beneath me. It repels me. The horror of actually putting yourself out on the line. Ghosts in shells, that’s what we are. Morphing into this new, high-tech race of Cyborgs with little circuits for souls. Hearts like remote-controlled devices. Controlled. Immense embarrassment about our human-ness. Such repression. Emotional toxicity. Perhaps this is precisely why our generation is dealing with, rather, trying desperately to combat, psychological ailments. Our parents never had it so rough, why? Because they were out there, living lives, full lives. But here we are, indulged in, warding off boredom, madness, psychosis and paranoia like real, live demons. And it all roots back to a lack of connection to people. The fear of intimacy. The faith in technology. The safety in computer chips and circuitry. Is there any way out of this wonderful, sublime alienation? Is anyone there?

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH JUGGAN KAZIM

What projects are you currently working on these days? I have been hosting my morning show, ‘Morning with Juggun’ on PTV Home for almost two years now. That is still ongoing. I have been the brand ambassador for Garnier for four years and I have just signed on with them for another year. I am also working on two film projects but they are very hush hush as we don't want to create hype until we have gone on set for the shoot. How is life post marriage and how has it changed your outlook on life? Life was great before marriage and is wonderful after marriage as well. I feel a lot more settled and focused now. Hamza has adjusted well to this new change in our lives and that is what 42

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

was most important for me. I can't say it’s changed my outlook on life though. What do you and Feisal agree on and disagree on? How do you resolve disagreements? Feisal and I agree on pretty much everything. We got married because we have a similar perspective on life. However, when we don't seem to have the same opinion on something we politely agree to disagree. Marriage is basically another name for compromise and understanding that all individuals are different and therefore at times it is ok to just back down and let things go. How do you manage to strike a balance

between professional and personal life? It’s a juggling act I tell you. Madness most of the time, Feisal deserves a lot of credit in helping me find a balance. He takes care of Hamza and handles his activities when I'm working or traveling. Also he encourages me to push myself further and pursue my dreams. What's been the most exciting project you've worked on? What’s been the most challenging? The most exciting project I’ve worked on is the play I did for Hum TV called Saiqa in which I played the title character. I also think all the work I did in Canada before I moved to Pakistan was exciting and stimulating. I was part of the actor's union so my rights as an artist were well protected and everything was much more organised in comparison to Pakistan. The biggest challenge has been adjusting to working in Pakistan and dealing with the madness of working without organisation. You were recently the showstopper for Ali Xeeshan at the 7th Bridal Couture Week. How was the Bridal Couture Week experience overall? Bridal Couture Week was fun. Ali Xeeshan is a sweetheart and pretty much dedicated his collection to me. I was totally blown away and humbled at the same time. However he did make me wear extremely revealing clothes which was a scary experience for me because deep down inside I'm a prude! Who are other Pakistani designers whose clothes appeal to you? I love Kamiar Rokhni, HSY, Umar Sayeed, Nida Azwer, Fahad Hussayn and Sana Safinaz! What is your personal style statement? Casual and comfy. I believe comfort is extremely important especially if you are a working person. So jeans and t-shirts appeal to me the most. You are currently the Brand Ambassador of Garnier Pakistan. What influenced your decision to endorse the brand and their products? Garnier is an amazing brand. I love using Garnier and I feel proud to be their local spokesperson for the past 4 years. This is

a brand that cares about its customers and the people that work for them. Their products are safe and contain natural ingredients. Being a part of the Garnier family has truly changed my life. There is a general feeling that Pakistani cinema is in a stage of revival. Do you feel the same? Would you get back into acting in films if you had the opportunity? I think the revival of cinema is great. I am working on and in talks for a few projects. So let’s see what happens! 2 projects are definitely in the pipeline. The reason I lost over 30 pounds last year was because I was in talks for film projects. Who is your favourite Pakistani film/TV director and why? Bilal Lashari as far as film goes because he is brilliant. Anyone who has seen his music videos and Waar knows what I'm talking about. As far as TV is concerned, and the people who have great film making potential, I would say Asim Ali and Sarmad Khoosat. What future projects can your fans look forward to? I am working on opening a restaurant in Phase 5, DHA, in Lahore. I am also in the middle of signing on as a producer with a production house for cinema so let’s see how that turns out. Lots and lots going on! Any special message that you would like to share with the readers of Paperazzi? Life is all about the moments and the little pockets of happiness that we are blessed with. So learn to live and let live. Live in the moment and be happy with what you have. What is a typical day like for you? A typical day for me is anything but typical. No one day is the same. However I do wake up and say my Fajr, wake Hamza and get him ready for school and then leave for my morning show at PTV at 7:00am. After the morning show at 11:30am I go to the gym after which either I go to a modeling shoot or a play shoot or a meeting or pick Hamza from school. It depends on the day and the commitments really. Finally though I come home by 8ish, make Hamza sleep, work on my script for the morning show for the next day, have dinner with Feisal by 9:00pm and bedtime by 10:30pm. What advice do you have for other aspiring models and actors? There is no replacement for hard-work and dedication. Also you must learn to respect your seniors in the industry. This work is a labor of love so only chose the media industry if you genuinely love the arts and the madness that comes with it. Wanting to be famous is the worst possible reason. 2014

If you’re accused of selfishness at some point in the first half of the week — or if it suddenly dawns on you that you’re being selfish — the easiest fix is to turn the glow of your attention onto someone else. Think about them. Do them a favor they didn’t ask for. Be charming. By Thursday, you register your own growth as a person. It’s a slow process, a lifelong process, but a sense of renewal is definitely within you on Friday. The laziness you feel at the end of the week contrasts sharply with the million-miles-an-hour mode you’re in on the weekend. For Good Luck: Wear Red Coral

There isn’t anything particularly unusual about Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, but something wonderful is definitely afoot. It’s a feeling. The everyday stuff seems fascinating. Your friends are funnier than ever. Your attachment to them is so strong that on Thursday, when you have coffee or dinner with one friend, another may become jealous. This kind of jealousy is ridiculous, but it speaks to how much you adore one another. On Friday, you’re moody (and a bit sensitive yourself!), but Saturday and Sunday you’re utterly charming. For Good Luck: Wear Blue Sapphire

You’re busy this week — especially the first half. Action, romance, partnerships and new projects all come into play. Those new projects may not all pan out the way you’d like them to, but your talent right now is simply getting things started, so don’t worry. Thursday and Friday find you more calculating — you’re taking measure of your life and work, asking tough question of good friends and reading heavy books. But the weekend is filled with plans and pals. On Sunday, watch your dogmatic streak. No one (not even you) wants to be preached to. For Good Luck: Wear American Diamond

You may be in the mood to buy a new stove, or repaint the kitchen, or go in a new direction with the layout of the garden. But have you considered that what’s really getting under your skin has nothing to do with the kitchen or the garden? If something’s bothering you at home, deal with it directly. That’s easier said than done, of course. Thursday is defined by emotional upheaval, and Friday you’re basically useless at work, what with all that’s on your mind. Saturday and Sunday, get out of the house. Why not take yourself to the movies? For Good Luck: Wear Dark Opal

leo

‘You plus friends’ is a winning combination on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday as well — whether it’s you or them or something in the air that none of you has anything to do with, you seem almost psychically connected this week. Your romantic life is active, too. Your needs are being met in just about every realm. It’s only natural that on Thursday you begin to think deeply about this state of happiness, such as where it comes from and how to maintain it. On Friday, your thinking is concentrated on thwarting the efforts of plotters, but your attitude is unchanging. The weekend is out of a storybook. For Good Luck: Wear Dark Ruby

If you’re going to the store at the start of the week, bring a friend. Your shopping is best done with a partner right now. You may need some advice, or you may go in on a big purchase together. The benefits of the shopping excursion also may have nothing to do with the shopping itself. A conversation with a pal on Wednesday about the difference between the things you want and the things you need sets you up to be in deep-thinking mode on Thursday and Friday. This weekend, if you’re feeling stuck, take a risk. For Good Luck: Wear Jade

You’ll blush so many times between Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon that someone may ask you (jokingly) if you’re having an allergic reaction to something. What is it that makes everyone want to flirt with you right now? Is it your sly smile? Your shoes? Your social life is in tip-top shape until around Thursday, when work woes weigh you down. Business matters figure strongly on Friday as well. Maybe you’re making up for all that time you spent in coffee shops earlier in the week. On Saturday and Sunday, you finally achieve a nice balance between what you have to do and what you want to do. For Good Luck: Wear Blue Sapphire

You could go either way. You can see both sides. You’d love a lot of toppings on your ice cream, but ordering it without toppings has an appealing simplicity as well. You’re in love with so-and-so; you’re not in love. Sheesh! How do people make decisions in this world? Have patience. Toward the second half of the week, an amazing thing happens: Many answers become apparent. They reveal themselves. You barely have to decide anything. The people you’re drawn to are suddenly drawn to you. Chalk it up to chemistry. This weekend, caught up in the magic, you may go on an unlikely adventure. For Good Luck: Wear Red Coral

aquarius

pisces

Your new ally may come in a funny disguise at the start of the week. Everyone’s seems to be wearing some kind of mask right now. Go outside of your comfort zone and try to connect with someone you almost assuredly have nothing in common with; you may be surprised how wrong you are. The energy you get from this burgeoning friendship will have you buzzing on Wednesday. Thursday or Friday, you’re required to say something in front of a group, which has you completely nervous. Saturday and Sunday are a blast. For Good Luck: Wear Amethyst

People are crazy. Just when you feel like you and you-know-who are going to take over the world together — in a peaceful, wonderful way — they flake out on you. They become distracted. Their reasons may be valid, but the truth remains: If you want something, it’s on your own shoulders to make it happen. You can handle that. You have great shoulders. Toward the second half of the week, your resolve strengthens even more, and you take someone who’s treating you like a doormat to the curb. You do it smiling. You’re a pro. This weekend, things finally start going your way. For Good Luck: Red Coral

You need some time to think things through. You need to prepare for what you’re getting into. The major message broadcasted during the first half of the week is that you’re loved by your friends. But that doesn’t solve your career-related quandaries. On Wednesday, the law (or a lawyer, or justice itself) comes into play in some way. Thursday and Friday, you’re contemplating the big picture in a nonspecific, hard-to-articulate way. Your subconscious is going crazy. But by Saturday and Sunday, the atmosphere of the weekend takes over, and joviality and lightness dominate. For Good Luck: Wear Yellow Sapphire

You’re well aware of what everyone else thinks. The pressing question at the start of the week is: What do you think? There couldn’t be a better period of time to initiate new projects than Tuesday and Wednesday. But if you’re unclear on what you want, how will you get it? What should the shape of your next project be? Friends might help you with this. Pay someone a visit on Thursday — go for a walk or possibly bowling — and talk it through. On Friday, your deepest hopes suddenly seem clear, and you have the resources you need to make them come to fruition. Take this weekend to plan. For Good Luck: Wear American Diamond
