baig works Owais Baig is originally from Lahore but based in Dubai since the past 6 years. A graduate from The National College of Arts (NCA) Lahore 2008, with a distinction in the field of communication design (formerly graphic design). He has been working in the advertising industry since then. He started his own creative digital agency based in Dubai by the name of “Phreakin’ Digital”which has been successfully running. The agency also got recognition by the Cannes Lions Middle East for its creativity in 2014. Furthermore, Owais started an Instagram page where he just posted work that he enjoyed producing which doesn’t need any client’s approval! The page is a medium of expression and creative let out that experiments design, tinged with satire and often him showing off his drawing and design skills. There are a lot of other ventures in the digital hemisphere that he’s launching in Pakistan as of now since Phreakin Digital is setting a foot in the Pakistani market. 10 things in 10 minutes Featuring Aneeqa Ali of the mad hatters 1. Tell us how you became a tour guide? Whenever I got tired from the usual routine and madness of the city, I decided to take a break and went on a trip to find refuge in the mountains. Exploring nature and interacting with people from different cultures always helped me in finding a new perspective on life. This habit of running away from my worldly responsibilities to hide in the mountains became a hobby, and with the passage of time turned into a passion. One day, I finally decided to take the plunge of breaking free from the chains of corporate slavery, and left my full time job to turn my passion into a career. This led to the formation of ‘The Mad Hatters’; a travel platform for wandering souls. 2. At what point did you first realize your interest in tourism? I had a keen interest in traveling since childhood, but was able to pursue this hobby more actively as I became more independent after graduating from university. It becomes difficult to materialize plans with friends when everyone is tied up with jobs and responsibilities, so I had to rely on various tour operators to fulfill my yearning for adventure during the past decade or so. Traveling with these operators made me realize that there is a dire need for offering quality services in this industry and promoting Pakistan’s beauty and diversity on a larger scale, as it does not get the deserved limelight. 3. What sets you apart from other tour guides? Even after the long struggle for women’s empowerment and equal rights, it is still a rare sight to see women in public spaces in Pakistan. Hence, the freedom of traveling is not as easily enjoyed by women, as it is by men. But, we are trying to change that at The Mad Hatters. It is probably the only tour operator company in Pakistan that is being led by a woman, without any male partner/support, so it naturally offers a comfortable environment for females on trips. Our aim is to combine education and traveling, to ensure that the participants learn something new while traveling with us. We strongly focus on conservation/welfare of the areas that we visit, and inculcate the same values in the people who travel with us. 4. What bores you? Following a fixed routine day in and day out bores me. You wake up, go to work, meet some friends, come back home, eat, watch TV, go to sleep, and repeat! I think we are meant to do a lot more than that in this lifetime. Each day needs to be taken as a new adventure!
5. If you wake up to find yourself completely invisible, what are the first two things you would do? If I were completely invisible, I would go out on the streets of my city and roam freely all night long without having the fear of being harassed, or raped, or mugged. 6. Which song, if any, can be the theme of your life? I cannot think of any particular song as such. The theme of my life is evolving constantly, so it cannot be described by just one song. 7. What superpower would you want, if you could have any? I would want to have the superpower of knowing all the languages of the world, so I could effortlessly interact with people from different regions and cultures. 8. Tour guides tend to be adventurous. On a scale of 1-10, how adventurous are you? I think I would rate myself an 11; fearless, daring, crazy, and spontaneous. 9. Two must haves in your bag? I always make sure to carry a camera to capture the beautiful places I visit and a notebook to pen down my experiences at the end of the day. 10. What’s your next exciting trip? My next trip will be to the beautiful valleys of Hunza and Naltar at the end of July. There are many other trips scheduled for the northern areas this summer, and I plan to head to the southern part of the country during winter. 11. Any tip to aspiring tour guides? Whatever you do, do with all your heart and give it your best! Biography Aneeqa Ali is an avid traveler and cyclist with a strong passion for exploring and experiencing new things. After graduating with an MBA degree from Lahore School of Economics, she acquired a diverse skillset by working in various industries during the past 8 years, including investment banking, telecommunication, education, not-for-profit, and the fashion industry. Giving in to her love for traveling, she decided to turn her passion into a career and started a travel company by the name of ‘The Mad Hatters’.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? Tanzania for my honeymoon. Tanzania because my husband and I both wanted to go to a place we had never been to and since we got married in December and my husband hates cold weather with a passion, this seemed like the perfect fit – gorgeous, tons to do and warm weather. Who did you travel with: Since it was my honeymoon, naturally I went with my husband. It would’ve been weird to take anyone else along haha. Where did you stay? We did a LOT of hotel hopping. During the first half of our trip which was an incredible safari, we stayed everywhere from an amazing lodge to a tent in the middle of the

Serengeti, all of that was arranged for by our tour operator Kilidove Tours (highly recommended btw!) and once we were in Zanzibar, we moved around a lot. In Stone town, we stayed at Double Tree by Hilton, then we moved to Matemwe Lodge at the gorgeous gorgeous Matemwe beach and lastly we went to my absolute favorite: Melia Zanzibar at the beautiful Kiwengwa beach. What are the best shopping spots there? Tanzania isn’t the best place if you’re looking for fancy brands, however they have the most incredible African craft stores spread all across Zanzibar. Because everything was so exotic and beautiful, I ended up buying a lot of gifts and souvenirs.

Suggest some amazing restaurants I’d definitely recommend Aqua – The Level restaurant at Melia Zanzibar. They had some of the best food we tried on the island and the place is perfect for a date night if you’re there with your significant other. Zanzibar is also pretty big on street food and if you’re a seafood lover – it’s your haven. For the best street food, you must check out Forodhani Gardens Food market in Stone town.

Finally, any tips? • Don’t forget to wear a very strong mosquito repellent if you’re going on a safari • Don’t forget your sunscreen when going to Zanzibar • Bargain like crazies! • If you want to go for a safari, go for a tour operator. It costs relatively less, it’s more structured, less hassle. Don’t be a hero and book everything yourself. • Get yellow fever vaccination done – they don’t let you in the country without the vaccination certificate!

Suggest places for a perfect night out It really depends in what is your perfect. So if you’re there to party, Kendwa Rocks beach hotel hosts full moon parties every single month, so you can always fit that into your itinerary. If you want a more romantic night out, almost all the
What can you do to over there to relax and unwind? - Lie down in a hammock by the gorgeous Indian Ocean and read a book. Or just sit by the beach and enjoy a slice of pizza. I don’t think there is anything more relaxing than a calm beach and Tanzania has some of the best in the world.
travel diaries
Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on: Top of my list is Ngorongoro Crater. Its hands down one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in my life. Before going into the crater, ask your tour guide to take you to one of the craters viewing points, trust me, it will take your breath away. Another thing that we saw from a distance (couldn’t see up close due to lack of time) but we feel everyone should see is Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s majestic to say the least.
resorts provide the facility to have an exclusive candle lit dinner by the beach. It’s all fancy with the entire place lit with candles plus you get the entire beach to yourself for a few hours. Matemwe lodge gave us a complimentary candle lit beach dinner and it was the best night we had there.
