A

s the pandemic hit the arts sector globally, The Colony shut their doors earlier this year.

However, they have relaunched converting a former shoe factory in Gulberg into a one of its kind arts center for the city. The vast venue includes dance studios, an art gallery, and acting studio, and a live performance auditorium to host events.

With a network of trained talent from across the country, they are providing dance classes in a wide array of genres, acting and theatre workshops plus a packed schedule of eclectic live events. Their art gallery, Dominion launches in January along with their production house, Colony Films.

Look out for their signature choreography showcase, Sway With Us, theatre productions, and music gigs in the pipeline.

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

Anyone who has known me for a long time will agree with me when I say they would never have even dreamed that I would start my own clothing brand. It just wasn’t me.. It was never a part of my plan - but things change and in this case, for the better. Growing up I had two options, accounting or law - it ended up being a bit of both. It wasn’t until I moved back to Pakistan that I went down this route.

Of course being the boss has it’s own perks, but it comes with a whole new set of challenges- the not-soglamorous parts of getting the work done. What no one tells is how much hard work and heart goes into running a business. It’s a 24-hour job!

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

Estee Lauder - She was a visionary of her time. I admire her for tenacity and dedication. To quote her - “I have never worked a day in my life without selling. If I believe in something, I sell it, and I sell it hard.”

Who has been the greatest inspiration in your life?

It was never actually an ‘aha’ moment. There was always Describe a day in your life a part of me that loved art. Go after your dreams! Trust yourself and be confident. If you never try, you’ll never know what you’re capable of.

Be humble, be strong, and work hard!

Where did you choose to go and why?

I had accumulated enough points on an airline to avail of two practically free tickets to Turkey, and since that was one of the destinations we still hadn’t managed to visit, we decided to take a short vacation in Istanbul.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Tell us about sites no one should miss out on?

Istanbul is a treasure trove of sites, each more beautiful and immersed in history than the other. However, there are some sites not as frequently visited as the others, such as Basilica Cistern, which is amazing, and Miniaturk which has some astounding miniatures of important sites in Turkey – and which you can take a gondola ride to, instead of going by road. And don’t miss the Eyub Sultan Mosque!

Suggest places for a perfect night out?

A dinner cruise over the Bosphorus is a great way to spend a night out. Istanbul is also famous for its seafood restaurants overlooking the Golden Horn Bridge, where they wheel in a trolley of assorted seafood for you to choose from and then cook it to your taste. Nothing better than a delicious meal in good company, overlooking a romantic view!

Any tips?

Make it a point to visit the Grand Bazaar for some great shopping and commute as much as possible by their underground, which is as impressive as Londons and very reasonable. In fact, the Istanbul Kart (metro card) will not just get you passage on the tram but also on the ferry and the cable car, so it is handy to have.
