Tell us a little about yourself and your educational background.

I m Saba Jawad Shiekh, born and rasied in Karachi. I did my Bachelors in computer science and I’m Also a fully trained Skin Esthetician.

Describe yourself in three words. dreamer | Achiever | fearless Have you always wanted to become a chef?

Cooking is my passion since childhood. I started making chappatis when i was only 9 years old. I m not a certified chef but yes i can call myself an old school traditional kitchen expert.

What inspired you to open Baba ka Dhaba?

Its a long story. Honestly, quarantine made me discover at the age of 40, the potential and talent i had all my life. I was always a working woman and never thought of starting my own food business. I was working as a Skin Esthetician and educational trainer for a world renowned skin care brand Guinot until my family planned to shift to Lahore and i had to quit my job.

In the beginning i was all happy, staying home, having a full relaxed life enjoying time with my husband and my son, but then slowly its started hitting me that i m not doing anything productive. Meanwhile my only brother who was in Karachi passed away while fighting cancer in March exactly 2 day before this lock down. I was shattered totally. And this was the point when depression hit me really hard, and it was so difficult for me to express it and put a smile on my face and live in a denial that everything is fine and its just a phase and it shall pass too. But it didnt pass until or unless i decided that i wont let this demon of depression take over me.

Because i was always fond of cooking since my childhood and with time this fondness became my passion. I loved preparing my family traditional recipes and hosting people at our house for brunches and dinners. So one fine day i planned to start my own small home based catering business here in Lahore.

Being an old school "budhi rooh" I was zero in social media marketing (and still learning how to do it). I started learning food photography (which is again another passion of mine)from internet and revamp my old food page and started uploading pictures of my food. It was small but it was my own venture which was so satisfying. And Alhumdulillah i received such an amazing response from people so far, that its unbelievable.

Just because of this Pandemic & quarantine, Allah made me realise that how much good i can do without wasting my time and getting depressed with the situation around me.

Indeed Allah has made everyone equally talented, wise and smart. Its up to us to find that treasure that is within us.

A lot of people are doing home based catering, what makes you guys stand out from the rest?

People who know me and Are close to my heart know that i started this food catering business not to earn money, but to earn love and respect from people. Also cooking is my utmost passion and i love preparing meals for people.

We have tried your food and it brings back our childhood memories, what is your secret to such Finger licking good Food?

Its because it is made with lot of love and passion. I take cooking as an art.

Every dish i make is very close to my heart.

Are you a foodie?

I m a born foodie What is your most favourite dish?

I m a rice person and anything with eggs.

The idea was to bring variety in vegetarian food for people to enjoy. On my trip to India in 2008, i learned many veg dishes from the locals. Veg thali is my personal favourite thats why i offer it on our weekly set menu on every thursday.

If you weren’t operating a food business, what would you be doing?

My old profession, working as a skin expert.

What is the most ordered item On your menu?

Our Madrasi Kadhi pakora, Hyderabadi khatti daal, Burhani an iranian dish ( egg plant and potato sabzi), Beef nalli nehari and Karachi masala biryani.

On your menu we have noticed that you cater to meat lovers and vegetarians too. What kind of vegan food do you offer?

What’s the next step for Baba ka Dhaba?

Que sera sera Whatever will be, will be! The future is not ours to see.

Where did you choose to go and why?

Since i planned to go to Russia first, i picked Ukraine because of proximity.. My choice of city hinged upon Odessa being a major summer destination. Also Ukraine has been on my travel list for a couple of years.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles!
