LEVELING THE PLAYING

his week we talk to the sister duo that is breaking all stereotypes and shedding a light on the lack of female representation in sports. Halima and Sarah Hossinzehi; two sisters that hail from the Baloch-Canadian community in East Gwillimbury, Ontario, were very recently featured in Vogue Magazine, representing Baloch culture on the playing field.

The Hossinzehi sisters are avid basketball fans, playing the game since they were quite young. The two decided that long gone are the days when men are put forward more than women especially in the field of sports, so they chose to dress their best and make the game a little fashionable by shooting hoops in traditional Baloch attire. Through this set of photographs, they wanted to show the world not just their rich Baloch culture which is something rarely talked about, but also to show that girls, especially those belonging to certain ethnic groups, have a voice and should be heard whether it’s on or off the playing field.

Baloch people mainly live in the Balochistan region of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, with many having immigrated to western countries. The Baloch still adhere to the old traditions they inherited and preserved from their ancestors. They share a distinct cultural identity, which they have preserved year after year through the language they speak, the traditions they uphold and the clothes they wear. In this way the Baloch people have sustained strong ties and connections with one another, making them a tightly knit community around the world.

In traditional Baloch dressing, men wear long shirts and loose pants along with a turban around their heads, while women wear a loose dress and pants with needle work that distinctly belong to the region, and are not common in other parts of the world. The top part of a woman’s dress and sleeves are embellished with Balochi embroideries; an amalgamation of threadwork, beads and elaborate motifs.

Here the Hossinzehi sisters bring out their most vibrant Baloch attire and add some panache to the basketball court. “My sister and I have played basketball amongst other sports for some time now.

However, we have noticed that it is not common to see other women of colour from South Asia or the Middle East 08

in similar settings. I’ve always found this upsetting. The idea of getting active for girls from these communities is not as common. We found it important to show that we are girls and we are playing and most importantly we are in our Baloch attire. Baloch culture is not commonly represented. So my sister, Halima Hossinzehi, our Afghan friend, Fahima Wakeely and I decided

to wear Balochi clothes proudly and in a variety of settings in order to show the versatility of our beautiful clothes and represent our culture. We shared these pictures on Instagram @mama.limaa @sarah.hossinzehi as well as a video on my husband’s YouTube channel, Mustafa Al Balushi.”

Tell us a little about yourself?

I was born and bought up in London. Graduated from University of Arts. Have an immense love for graphics, interiors, fashion and most importantly my family.

My mother, she’s a strong and extremely hardworking lady who never gives up and handles everything with a smile on her face, she definitely inspires me!

Describe a typical day in your life?

Early morning school runs - big breakfast with my husband (which I look forward to) Then it’s just work, school, factory, stores, shoots, kids activities, dinner and bed!

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I always had an eye for fashion, but graduated in graphic design and photography so the "TO combination of what I loved to do #BOSSLADY was perfect, hence Hina Mirza!

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

For many years I have done newborn photography and always kept exhibitions on the side. But now its the other way around.

Did you ever feel discouraged mid way your routine? How did you push through it?

I haven't come across that yet, and hopefully would not want to be at that stage. My husband has always supported me from the start till now and we work great as a team.

What are the top three things that you cherish the most in your life?

My mum, my kids and my husband!

Set a goal, make a plan and go for it!

What is the #1 thing yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

Hajj What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

You dont get time to put your legs up ever and it’s hard to switch off!

Name one boss lady that inspired you take your own path, and how did she inspire you?

Tell us about your brand, how and when did you decide to be a fashion designer?

I always want to be a fashion designer since grade 8. I spent hours imagining myself as a designer and it just happened. I graduated from PIFD in 2016, a little after that I started working at Elan to gain experience. After a year, I moved on and started my own thing and haven’t looked back since.

Describe your brand in three words?

Our brand is for women who are fearless, who are strong-headed, and who are bold.

What makes Hussain Rehar different from other fashion brands?

I feel the aesthetics of our designs are very unconventional and out of the ordinary. Our designs are bold and charming with a perfect combination of traditional mixed with modern, in not only our luxury prêt collection but also our bridal, formal and prêt collection. Honestly, I always try to come up with different designs, as you all can see on my Instagram page, every design has a different vibe. I don’t like to repeat my colours or designs because I also get bored very easily.

Where do you derive your inspiration from?

I get my inspiration from nature and my imagination. I love combining the nature vibe with a modern futuristic sort of edgy feel. This can be seen in my latest collection, “Daughter of the Moon”. Basically, it is the fusion of two to three things together, i.e. imagination, nature, and modern futuristic vibe as well.

Who do you think will be the perfect muse for this brand?

I really like Anne Hathaway, I think she’d look gorgeous in my designs. I also like Kalki Koechlin, she has a very different kind of vibe.

Which one is your favourite creation by far?

That’s a very difficult question for me to answer as I always have at least one favourite piece from each collection.

Describe your clientele. What kind of women carries your outfits?

My designs are tailor-made for women who are in between 20 to 40 years of age who are strong independent working women who want to project themselves as modern and refined which is why not every woman can carry my designs.

What are the pros and cons of being a fashion designer?

People think it’s an easy profession as most people think it’s only about designing and forget the other aspects of being a fashion designer. There is a lot of hard work that goes into this profession from the minute a designer imagines the design all the way to selling the outfit. I feel the best part is the growth that a designer goes through while working from collection to collection because a designer is constantly working on the improvement of not only the designs but also themselves.

Any advice for an aspiring fashion designer? Or someone in the same field as you?

Firstly, be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Be unique and express yourself however you feel. Be focused as you have to do a lot of work. Moreover, Pakistan’s fashion industry is still quite

small which is why we need more and more designers to rise above with new Eastern & Western designs for the Pakistani market. We have to get people to start supporting the local community because right now, a huge chunk of our population gets their shopping done in Dubai and London. Lastly, don’t afraid to be bold andcourageous with your designs.

Where do you wish to see your brand in the next 5 years?

I want to see the brand everywhere.

We are already shipping worldwide through our website which serves as an online store. We get orders from London, America, Canada, and lots of other places. But that doesn’t stop me from dreaming bigger, I would love to open more outlets and studios in different countries and different cities.
