We met when I was 18 and we've been together for 14 years!

How would you describe working together?

It was crazy working together in the beginning but now we have found the right balance.

How do you divide responsibilities?

I'm the Creative Director and Saif handles Operations.

What are pros & cons of working together?

The pros are that we get to share responsibilities of work and home and cons are that we bring work back home and it's hard to sometimes let go of work when at home.

What advice would you give couples who want to work together?

Always give each other space to be who you are. Don't be a boss but be partners.

We met in 2000 and started working together in 2004. So it's our 13th year.

How would you describe working together?

Working together is a lot fun. We share our concepts and plans and often disagree but no serious event. It's a very complementary work experience because we have different strengths so it works very well.

How do you divide responsibilities?

Hasnat: Our areas of work are very different. Shazia looks at the designing side of our business whereas I look at sales and marketing.

What are the pros & cons of working together?

I only see working together as a big pro. It keeps us together as a family and at the end that's all that matters.

What advice would you give couples who want to work together?

You have to be great friends before you are a couple.

umair tabani & sania maskatiya How long have you worked together?

Sania: I joined hands with my brother, business partner and director Umair Tabani in 2010 to start the clothing brand Sania Maskatiya.

How would you describe working together?

Working with family is best because you can always count on getting honest feedback and criticism. We can always trust each other with whatever we plan. But it has side effects too; the shop talk sometimes carries on post working hours.

How do you divide responsibilities?

Umair: I'm a chartered accountant by degree and Sania is a Textile design graduate. She is talented however has little expertise in business management so right now we are in an ideal situation where we both use our talent

to the maximum. She looks after the creative aspects and I focus on the business objectives of our brand.

What are the pros and cons of working together?

We are like an extension of ourselves.

We have a lot of dependence and reliance on each other, we are extremely vocal and don't hesitate in voicing our opinion. However we do argue a lot and there are a lot of disagreements but we sort them out by being rational and listening to whoever makes the most sense.

What advice would you give other siblings who want to work together?

Just stick together through thick and thin because there's no one in this world who could be more honest to you than your siblings. Take all the criticism constructively and always do whatever is best for you and your business.

We met while doing our O'levels, Jehanzeb has been managing the business at Elan for a while now.

How would you describe working together?

It's amazing that I have someone to help and support me, I can focus on my areas of strength and he applies his expertise to what he knows better- we have our disagreements at times, differences of opinion on strategy etc but it all works out fine.

How do you divide responsibilities?

I handle and head the creative teams, design and marketing and he looks over and heads the business and administrative departments.

What are the pros & cons of working together?

You get to see a lot of each other, you can divide and conquer and are looking out for mutual interest. The relationship is multi faceted and hence in some ways deeper. On the flip side your work never ends, it sometimes eclipses your home life and conversations and you can't complain about a particular work colleague to a sympathetic spouse!

What advice would give couples who want to work together?

It's a great way to bond and build something together- you should have clearly defined roles so you don't end up stepping on each others toes and share a certain level of respect, friendship and equality for the equation to work.

nadir firoz khan & maha burney When did you meet?

We first met when we were 8 years old! We were neighbors and best friends and would play together every day. We lost touch for many years and only reconnected 7 and 1/2 years ago when we met at a common friend's wedding. I think when you’re connected as kids it’s easy to feel that connection again.

We were both really comfortable with each other and the bond was pretty much immediate!

What are the pros and cons of working together?

The biggest pro is that you are working with your partner, best bud and person you trust beyond anyone else! You get to spend a lot of time together, travel together and share experiences and time that you otherwise wouldn’t have. It’s great in a way because you’re really connected in terms of your worklife experience and totally understand what the other is going through. You are a team in every aspect of your life.

How long have you worked together?

We have worked together pretty much the entire time we have been married, which is about 6 years or so.

What advice would you give couples wanting to work together?

How would you describe working together?

We are both very lucky to share the same aesthetic & stylistic sensibilities and have the utmost faith in each other’s taste, which makes things a lot easier. Of course we do disagree sometimes on what’s working & what isn’t, but like in any working partnership there is always push and pull. Ironically it’s that very creative tension that pushes us to produce some of our best work; we are the ying to each other’s yang.

The catch is that it’s hard to maintain a work life balance. Working together is tough because it blurs the boundaries between areas of your life that would otherwise be compartmentalized. You have to make a concerted effort to separate your work from your personal life. You have to remember that even though you spent the whole day together working, it is still important for you to take time out as a couple, to do things you enjoy outside of work and to spend time with family and friends.

A

li Sethi's new song 'Chan Kithan' directed by the talented Taimoor Salahuddin ( a.k.a Mooroo) has revived the true essence of desi music with a contemporary twist. Taking the lyrics out of their traditional melodic zone, and bringing them into a more contemporary electronic landscape, has brought out the melancholy magic at the heart of this iconic folk ditty.

The video is a modern-day Cinderella story with a twist. Writer and actor Mira Sethi is seen entering a fancy Lahore house party in an abaya that acts as her de facto ball gown. The video explores how people all over the world negotiate the categories of "traditional" and "modern", how they populate their dreams with images from their own lives, and how they manage their social realities while holding onto their romantic aspirations.

The clothes worn by the characters in the video add an unexpected touch of artistry. All the beautiful outfits worn in the video were from Studio S's spring/summer 2017 “Abstraction� collection. This collection was inspired by the folk cultures of South Punjab and all the pieces were handmade by artisans from the region. This made for a perfect fit with Ali Sethi's song, which relies on Seraiki lyrics and melodies. The collection was further inspired by 20th century expressionist painting. The use of sheesha work, tarkashi, and crochet fuse rigorous technique with bold imagination. all in all, this blend of fashion and music, an experiment in "punjabi gothic", was unprecedented in pakistan's music scene and will be talked about for a long time to come.

Tell us about your new song Chan Kithan. How long have you been working on this song?

Two years in the making, a real challenge and a huge pleasure to create. My ambition was to make a gothic song -romantic and a little creepy. I wanted to fully explore the yearning and melancholy in the lyrics without succumbing to a passive or victimised narrative. I think we struck a fine balance! The song has a lot of heart and soul, it's vulnerable but also powerful.

How did you come up with the idea of the video?

I had this image of a girl in an abaya that was stuck in my head. The rest just fell into place.

What was the reason behind your collaboration with Studio S? I wanted a fresh design component for the video.

In Pakistani music videos, especially in depictions of love stories, there is a tendency to sentimentalise the aesthetic by way of Mughal (or faux-Mughal) stylisation.

So women will wear intricate desi jewels and linger artfully in jharokas. I wanted to dispense with that aesthetic altogether. Pakistan is a very urban country now, full of young people who take public transport, download music on their phones and leave fiery comments under pictures on Instagram. I wanted our video to reflect that new Pakistan.

Seher's clothes were a perfect fit in that sense -- they are artful and beautiful.

What instruments did you use in the song and which one do you enjoy the most?

We used many instruments, but my favourites are the 90s Casio plug-in that punctuates the verses and the snakecharmer's 'been' in the intervals.

Describe the mix of Chan Kithan with Abstraction to us.

Ali and I had been wanting to collaborate for a while. When I heard Chan Kithan I knew it was meant to be.

The song has such a beautiful folk vibe and the new collection I was working on at the time 'Abstraction' was heavily inspired by the embroidery and craft techniques from South Punjab.

How did you think of making a collection inspired by South Punjab?

South Punjab is home. It has such a rich cultural history and so I wanted to incorporate the unique folk techniques from the region into an edgy and contemporary fashion collection. The final result was 'Abstraction,' an interplay between South Punjab folk and 20th century abstract expressionist art.

How has your experience been working with Ali Sethi on a music video?

Working with Ali Sethi was an absolute joy! He's not only unbelievably talented but a consummate perfectionist. It was easy to have total faith in his vision and just enjoy the ride.

What are the main techniques you used in your collection?

All the techniques used were specific to the South Punjab region, such as mirror work, tarkashi and crochet. The aim was to completely modernise these traditional crafts through the process of design. The prints used in the collection are paintings by some of the best Abstract Expressionists of the 20th century.

I

n a fast paced fashion industry, one seldom gets a chance to see something so different that truly captures their interest and touches the soul. The hyperactive consumerist culture that we live in makes it difficult for us to take a step back and just focus on one single item. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements of various sorts to lure us in and spend our money. In a culture like that, it is so important to be an individual with personal desires and talent to stand out.

In a rapid fashion culture like that, filmmaker and multimedia artist, Abdullah Haris has carved his way in with his unique and mind-boggling concepts through his various photoshoots, music videos and television commercials. Abdullah knows exactly how to play with art by displaying underlying plots and meanings in his work so as to really catch the audiences’ attention and prick the conventional way of thought.

His journey, like many true artists, has not been easy. Initially an aspiring chartered accountant, Abdullah soon realised that sitting at a desk all day was not his cup of tea.

His creative Aquarian traits led him to take up his dream of taking pictures and making videos. Hopping from one odd job to another whilst experiencing severe financial setbacks for months had become normal for Abdullah until he finally got an opportunity to produce and direct a documentary show for a music channel. That’s where he met highly recognized and established artists like Hadiqa Kiani, Ali Zafar, Irfan Kiani and Ali Xeeshan, who not only supported him but became some of his closest allies till date.

He was recommended to us by Ali Zafar while Abdullah was still relatively new and while we were still doing Paper Magazine. Working with him was a pleasure and we knew then that Abdullah Haris would become a force to be reckoned with. Obviously when it came to our 200th issue we knew we wanted Abdullah to shoot the cover, especially since it was our first time on the cover. Knowing us Abdullah suggested we go with a fun, celebatory vibewith a baseball bat and gloves as props hinting at sports metaphors like hitting it out of the park and not throwing in the gloves. We loved the concept instantly!

In the spotlight this week is ace photographer & filmmaker Abdullah Haris

Abdullah’s ability to come up with stellar concepts has led him to work with some of the highest rated brands today, such as Coca Cola, Yamaha, Sapphire, Elan, Gul Ahmed, Alkaram and many more. Filmmaking being his primary passion, he has accidentally but not so surprisingly made a name for himself as one of the best photographers in town and received the Paperazzi Award for Best Fashion Photographer in 2015. He has been nominated for four consecutive years and even won Best Photographer at The Lux Style Awards!

Even though, Abdullah’s photography speaks volumes in itself, his bigger obsession lies in making films. Always looking to improve himself and expand his horizons, Abdullah is constantly focusing more on directing and producing films which will capture his thoughts and encompass his visuals on a larger scale. As a responsible artist and citizen of Pakistani society, Abdullah also believes in using his platform to convey important messages. For example, one of his best work has been for Ali Xeeshan, to direct a mind stimulating fashion film focusing on female child marriage, called “KHAMOSHI”, literally meaning silence and figuratively explaining the lack of choice some child brides have when it comes to making decisions about their lives. The short fashion film also focuses on how majority of masses practice forced marriages on girls and restrict them from the freedom they deserve.

That’s not all though! His very recent collaboration with Bonanza Satrangi, this Eid has proven that he has what it takes to make it into the film industry as he conceived & directed the brand’s new television commercial/music video starring the legendary Hadiqa Kiani, Hasnain Lehri and Hania Aamir. The flawless conceptualization has not only served as a TVC but also as a music video for Hadiqa Kiani’s new song, “Aaj Rung Hai”.

Abdullah Haris’ affair with film and photography speaks for itself. His conviction to take his name forward in the most productive way possible is what makes him so attractive to brands. Needless to say, Pakistan needs more talent like Abdullah Haris.

After a small stint in a few textile companies, Saira realized her heart wasn't it in. When asked about the companies she worked for, Saira says, "I started my career by working for a retail 2017

company & learnt all the tricks of the trade. When I started working, one of my first challenges was to set up an Research & Development department.

My second job was as a brand manager in the fashion & textile sector. As a woman it is always good to empower yourself with knowledge and experience.�

Fast-forward to a couple of years later and Saira launched her own company. She says, "I opened my own company because of the hurdles I faced

while working for others and that really motivated me. People do not want to appreciate you or the value to add. Women are discouraged at the workplace in our male dominated society and there is a lot of leg pulling. Plagiarism is rampant in the industry as well and there is a lot lobbying.”

Saira Fatima Sadozai hails from a conservative yet qualified Pathan background and is the first woman in the family who is working in the industrial & fashion sector. "My Abba has always been my greatest motivation & the man behind my success. Without his support & without the prayers of my Ammi it wasn’t possible to reach this point.” She ventured into retail consultancy and visual merchandising at a time when such concepts were almost non existent.

our 100th issue For our 100th issue we created a multifaceted campaign. In print we collaborated with Sana Safinaz, NFK photography, Omayr Waqar amd Sadaf Kanwal to create stunning images for the cover shoot. We did special features like Reign of the Shah charting the success of Elan and created a 100 Thank You's list to recognise all the people and moments that helped us reach that milestone. We traced Mahira Khan's fashion evolution over the years and created a comprehensive trend report. On social media the love poured in, in the form of video messages and congratulatory posts. RJ Sumi of FM 91 invited us to her show which created more hype. The bloggers were nothing but supportive with Siddy Says doing a fabulous feature on us on her blog while A Wardrobe Affair let us take over their Instagram account for a day! Meanwhile flowers and personalised baked goodies started to pour into the Paperazzi HQ. In stores the biggest and best designers offered a one day 20% discount exclusively to Paperazzi readers and marked their stores with our personalised Paperazzi 100 balloons!

Growing up with sadaf jalil

Sadaf Jalil runs the successful home accessories label, CARBON, with her friend Sarah Saigol Mushtaq and manages Sana Safinaz’s Pret and Diffusion line. She is surrounded by a close-knit network of female cousins and is a doting wife and loving mother. ANISA SHAIKH gives a personal account of growing up with the super cool Sadaf Jalil.

I

must have been close to sixteen when I realised that Sadaf was (and I use this expression because there is simply no eloquent alternative) really very cool. Her younger sister, Seveen had been one of my best friends through high school and we were in her bedroom when Sadaf first walked in and made an impression. A bunch of eager and high-pitched teenage girls huddled together on a Friday evening eating chili chips, drinking Coca Cola, squealing about boys and gossiping about girls probably wasn't the most happening of venues. However Sadaf came in and sat down closest to me. She was upbeat but never perky. 'Hello Jaanies!

What are you bachas up to?' she asked. We darted furtive glances at each other and then toward Seveen for the 'dont-worry-she-is-cool' approval. She nodded and we began to unburden our hearts. Even though I had been in and out of their beautiful yellow-stone house for most of my childhood, my encounter with Sadaf on that particular evening was different. Her genuine curiosity, poise, sense of humor, timeless beauty and laid back outfit made her an instant hit with the bachas.

From then on, even though my family was more of a didi kind of gang, I was quite content appending behn to her name. Most of the young ladies in her family were addressed in this rather endearing way. She was now Sadaf Behn.

Fast forward to the present day. When I agree to write this profile my most pressing concern is how to reconnect with her after over a decade. As I no longer reside in Pakistan we arrange to speak over Skype.

When the call comes, she sits down and for a second I feel the same jolt of nervous excitement that I had felt so long ago. She looks even more striking than I remember. Marriage, children and a career agrees with her.

Sadaf has managed Sana Safinaz's Pret and Diffusion line for over 20 years. Sana and Safinaz are not just her employers but close friends too. I ask her how it began and she tells me “I had gotten back from college and I was doing nothing. I ended up helping them at one of their shoots, the model didn't show up and they sort of just threw me into the shoot. I guess I handled the clothes ok, the next day I was told 'please come into work',�. What started as an addition to Sana Safinaz's furniture line became the business venture called Carbon which she runs in partnership with her close childhood friend Sarah Saigol Mushtaq.

Carbon makes silver-plated home accessories and their exhibitions have repeatedly sold out with orders on the rise.

Sadaf's mother and aunt have been the brains and talent behind Troika which made exquisite women's footwear to order at a time when few were in that business locally. Her sister Sanya Muneer, is the head of 2017

the fashion house Misaal. Seveen, her young sister and my dear friend, is a textile graduate from Central St. Martins and the director of design at Misaal. In her extended family Aamna Taseer, Tammy Haq, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Bina Khan and Tanya Shafi are well known in their respective fields and as independent, intelligent and outspoken women.

As we chat, I realise that Sadaf's close-knit network of women are essential to her life and simply cannot be excluded when considering her own successes. A little to my frustration though, Sadaf spends more time speaking of the presence and influence of said friends, siblings and cousins in her life than about herself.

Often discrediting herself she brushes away the mention of her own triumphs to tell me “I have grown up in a family of mad talent,” punctuating her adoration of their creative achievements by remarking, “You know I am probably the least talented person in my family”. I am not convinced this is true. In fact it is evident that her greatest asset is her ability to micro-manage, an often underrated skill without which creative talent would suffocate under the load of administrational and practical concerns. However, I am not able to separate her story from those around her so I stop fighting the urge and simply let her continue.

At first glance it becomes obvious that while Sadaf and some in her family could live comfortably without having to work for a living they are all motivated and deeply driven by their professional lives. “I had my babies and a week after that I was back at work because I was hating just being in the house. I like working. I can sit at home but it just doesn't challenge me enough.”

When she smiles shyly, lights her second cigarette and shifts her gaze after I pay her a notso-subtle compliment about her gentle nature, it dawns on me just how uncomfortable compliments and spotlights make her. Her sentences begin with “we” and not “I”, and her eyes still light up with curiosity whenever the subject changes from her to me.

I ask her what has changed in the many years since we met. “At 44 I am what I was at 24,” she exclaims, adding with a laugh that she is still nutty as ever. With the ease and humility of someone that does not take themselves too seriously and relishes the odd self-deprecating wisecrack she concedes that now that she is a mother of two she has “to tone it down a tad.” Mideast Hospital, she reminisces, was the site of quite a party after she gave birth to her daughter Talya, now 16. “I got wheeled out after ten hours of labour, wheeled into my room and counted forty-two people in my room! I remember it so clearly.” Her husband Umair, unable to contain his joy had invited an army of friends to toast the arrival of their first born. I couldn't help but laugh at how she describes this noisy, jubilant bunch of friends laughing and celebrating, oblivious to the doctors and nurses who were probably not amused in the slightest.

Indeed these gatherings of friends are an all too common occurrence in her life. She sweeps her perfectly groomed hair from one side to the other, tucks it behind her ear and with a half smile and heaps of pride she says, “Here it's an open door policy. An open house really.” Her eyes light up, she fidgets with her hair some more, “In fact when I got married Umair's best friend came to live with us for three years. It was like a dormitory!” She explains how

her own mother's manner but rather a surprising development in the recent years since her children are in their teens. The first few years of her marriage, she recounts, took work and the major adjustments were not easy but Sadaf never went down the long and whiney road. There are no 'uff''s' or a 'hai allah's' and instead in their place a desire to make light of those times in every relationship which can be troubling and painful.

The woman I see today is both the rebellious twenty something and the fabulous forty something.

It is the soft acceptance of rebelliousness that comes to mind when I recall another memory from my teenage years as I watch her light a cigarette and begin to crave one myself. While I can't join in as I have recently quit, there were often times in my teens when I could have been found leaning out of friends’ bathroom windows to avoid being caught, cursing the humidity and puffing furiously. On a similar occasion upon hearing the approach of their mother one afternoon I panicked. Luckily for me, Sadaf casually breezed in and lit a cigarette to mask the smoke billowing out of the bathroom, effectively deflecting a potentially embarrassing situation with no fuss or judgment. Her most redeeming quality in a teenager's

eyes was that of steering clear of moral high grounds and a false sense of entitlement. Before the interview I had wondered whether she might have let these qualities fade.

Fortunately she has proven otherwise.

It's obvious that she is clearly in love and content with her husband of nineteen years. With the expression of a naughty teenager, not that of a jaded wife or exhausted mother, Sadaf tells me how he pampers her and brings a calm to her frazzled nerves at the end of a rough day. We both agree that our better halves have somewhat effectively muted the fatalist in us.

When the sun has set on our hour of video chat I feel like I should squeeze in just a few more questions but I can see that her children need her attention. There are family members around and her phone is beginning to ping so I fondly bid her goodbye. For a minute before I sit down to write I stare at the screen amused that it was in answering a fairly standard but slightly tedious question about taste in home decor and designers that Sadaf described herself more aptly than I could ever have. She is indeed, 'Mostly classic but sometimes just once in a while.. off-beat.”.

She reveals to me that having children has brought out a controlling side of her which her sisters help keep in check.

ur lives and attitudes today are often dictated by society and media. There are many different pressures on women in Pakistan and unfortunately our standard of beauty remains being thin and fair. Not strong. A woman's health is vitally important for a successful family and a successful society but somehow we let the superficial standards dictate our lives.

Girls grow up playing with dolls and thinking that being a mother comes naturally. No one tells us what this life altering transition entails or explains the complicated, demanding and selfless journey being a mother is. No one thinks it's important to prepare us for the bloated image in the mirror that was once a young girl, no one really feels it's important to reassure us that this too shall pass. Some of us are lucky to have enlightened mothers who are there to help us on this emotional and physical rollercoaster journey. Every one of us has a story, each story has a lesson, so here is mine.

Two pregnancies in one year, two C-sections in one year and two beautiful babies later here I am writing about my journey. A journey through pregnancy, postpartum healing (both emotional and physical) and finding strength and balance.

Though all mothers-to-be prepare themselves by researching, reading and discussions with elders who share their experiences- nothing and no one can prepare you for what lies ahead. Having a baby is always glorified and no one will tell you that your body is going to balloon up, that your nose will stretch from one ear to another and your feet and ankles will swell up so much you won't recognise them. Our hormones make us giggly and weepy at the same time. During the last trimester I didn't recognise the person staring at me in the mirror which was not only depressing but also made me feel lonely. Of course I watched my weight as much as I could, worked out and only ate healthy food- but that did not change the fact that I looked and felt like a mini van. Finally my precious baby arrived. When I held my child close for a while I forgot my pregnant journey. As I was precariously standing on the threshold of healing I realised I was pregnant again. Still heavy with my baby weight, sleep deprived, fatigued and barely getting familiar with motherhood. This was no time to be pregnant again, but here I was.

During my second pregnancy I could barely eat as I had terrible nausea. When the second baby came 9 months later and I held her in my arms I suddenly wanted to burst out crying. Postpartum depression or

baby blues are different for everyone.

Some like me feel them intensely.

In my case postpartum blues were the worst. My energy level dropped to rock bottom, I suffered from severe sugar cravings (consuming 4 chocolate bars in one sitting ) I was short tempered, couldn't concentrate and my confidence took a nosedive. As I watched my children grow I realised that something in me had shifted and now I had to put them first, but for me to be able to give them everything they needed I had to become healthy and happy. I had to start some where, so I began my journey.

Struggling each day I began to train no matter how tired I was, even after waking up with the children several times at night. By pushing myself to train consistently gradually I began feeling good again. I introduced a healthy menu in the house. I slowly began to drop the weight and started feeling stronger. I developed more patience and began enjoying being a mother more. I realised that to be a better mother I needed to find time for myself to do things that make me happy and look at my life holistically. I wanted to be super fit not for the scrutinising judgmental eyes of the media but for myself and my children.

I have shared my journey so you ladies know it's alright to be depressed, it's alright not to be perfect and it's alright to fall. It is not ok to ignore your health or pretend that life is perfect when you're falling apart. Take time out for your physical and emotional well being.

It took me a while to find my balance through faith, healthy eating and a disciplined lifestyle. Strong is the new beautiful and the power comes from within!

My mehndi jora was by the incredible House of Kamiar Rokni. I had known from the very beginning that I wanted something traditional, but with a twist. The saffronhued lehnga choli was the perfect combination of heritage and exquisite craftsmanship. Using cotton net as the base, the jora was intricately embellished with traditional gota, a sprinkling of crystals for sparkle, and the most incredible coloured detailing with threadwork.

As homage to my mother-inlaw, we added beautifully embroidered parrots on the back (her very first present to me was a pair of Amber Sami tota earrings). Beautiful as it was, the true joy of the outfit was the ease with which it could be worn. Despite the heavy embellishments and long dupatta, I was able to dance and celebrate all night! I went for super natural makeup by the lovely Aashi at Nabila Salon, with floral jewellery and a gold tikka.

Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. My relationship with Rano’s Heirlooms is one that has always been symbiotic – every outfit they have created for me has drawn inspiration from my own life, and is the result of incredibly close collaboration. Similarly, my baraat jora drew inspiration from many elements of Omar and my story.

The concept was born from the rose and jasmine gajras Omar brought me when we were engaged (and often still does!). The peshwas and lehnga were entirely hand-worked with delicate gold and crystal work, coupled with a bone-coloured dupatta with hints of green threadwork. With a low bun with fresh motia, a classic makeup look (once again by Aashi from Nabila’s) and very traditional jewellery, the outfit came together to evoke the sense of an old-school bride.

For my valima, my mother-in-law presented me a gorgeous emerald green and gold gharara that she herself wore as a bride.

Handmade block-printed textile embellished with saccha kaam was revamped by the one and only Bunto Kazmi with a simple gold blouse and dupatta. I opted for smokey bronzed eyes with kajal, a naturally stained lip and a contoured but glowy finish. Natasha of The Makeup Suite was incredible and I would recommend her highly to all brides to be.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Where did you choose to go and why?

We visited almost 6-7 cities in Sri Lanka. The country is a perfect holiday destination since it has a bit of everything; from gorgeous landscapes to relaxing beaches , wildlife safaris , great food & Adventure sports . Plus everything is quite cheap (inexpensive) Who did you travel with?

What are the best shopping spots there?

Strangely enough, the bigger cities like Colombo and Kandy have no nice places to shop so don't waste your time or money there. Galle is hands down the best place to shop in SL ; you will find lovely art shops there (I bought some lovely posters from Stick No Bills poster shop), clothing and accessory shops like "Barefoot" (it will remind you of Khaadi), Spa Ceylon which is famous skin / body care brand , and Lots and lots of jewel shops (Peddlars jewels is the best).

You can also find small stalls / shops in Hikkaduwa and Mirissa , but you must keep most of the shopping for Galle.

Where did you stay?

We mostly chose BnBs and guest houses since they give you a feeling of home outside home. Our favourites were Drift BnB Suggest some amazing restaurants there? in Colombo , Villa 24 in Kandy , Heidi's home in Nuwara Eliya & White & Co in Colombo (good for continental food) , Dewmini refresh hotel in Hikkaduwa.

Also , spend a day at the beach - take your hat , sunnies, sunblock and some cotton sheets along.

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on Aaah , your trip to Sri Lanka would be incomplete without a visit to the Tea Gardens in Nuwara Eliya. I would suggest you take the first-class train from Kandy to Nuwara for the breathtaking scenic views on way. Nuwara Eliya is a small city up north & every scene looks like it's out of a painting, with Gregory lake in the centre. The Botanical Gardens in Kandy were simply jaw dropping.

You must also visit one of the Safari parks like Udawalawe or Yala for experiencing wildlife in breathtaking natural habitats.

Mirissa has a beautiful beach if you're a beach person..

Finally, any tips?

- if you're a group of people (2-3), It's best to hire a personal coach to travel between cities . It's far more convenient than Trains or buses. (Which are really pathetic honestly unless you get first class) - All you need is flip flops and a comfy pair of sandals within SL. - be careful of scams , especially in Colombo. people try to rip off tourists - Bargain as much as you can. Must look for 3-4 options and then finalize .

Suggest places for a perfect night out Mirissa Beach is quite hip at night , especially on weekends, with small pubs and restaurants along the coast. SL isn't big on night life .
