bake my day!

mehak elahi chats with the new domestic goddess on the block, maham moiz of coco chéri! read all about her journey.. How and when did you start your home based bakery, Coco Chéri? Baking has always been my biggest hobby and when I had time to invest in it after completing my education, I would always be found in the kitchen experimenting with different textures and flavors. Soon friends and family began requesting me to make them cakes at special occasions and pushed me to take it up professionally upon the great feedback. While it had been in the pipeline for a while, I finally put my plan into action in February and set up Coco Chéri.

Did you take any professional cooking/ baking courses? I’ve spent a lot of time travelling to try different flavors and meet with various bakers and cooking experts in hopes to learn from their skill and experience. This was followed by the privilege of enrolling in one of the top culinary arts colleges in Canada, where I managed to top my batch and learnt the techniques I apply in my desserts.

How and Why did you decide to pursue your career in food business? For as long as I can remember I’ve always been an avid foodie and have been thoroughly fascinated by the culinary arts. From baking pizzas with my mother as a child to creating havoc early morning, making one of a kind pancakes with my best friends- anyone who’s ever known me would know this was my true calling.

Coco Chéri's beautiful cakes are the talk of the town! How long does it approximately take to decorate one cake? Do you do it all by yourself? Yes, I pretty much do it on my own which is why making one cake can take upto a day. I sketch each design first so the mental image in my head gets structure. In order to stand alone as cake decorator I think it’s important to test out unique techniques and constantly come up with new stuff.

We hear that you're super fond of baking/cooking? What are your personal contributions to the extensive menu? Everything on the menu is a product of my personal experimentation. Each confection is individually hand-crafted with a lot of thought and love put into it. I recently added three new deserts to the list; creamy nut fudge cups, walnut tarts and a seasonal special, the Coco Chéri ice-cream macaron (this one’s a must-try!).

What is the best & worst part about this job? It’s very fulfilling when my confections can help make an important day for someone more special. The best aspect of this job is definitely being able to please my clients. I firmly believe nothing in this world can bring the kind of happiness good food, cakes and desserts in particular. I also love that I can let my creative juices flow through this art. The worst aspect on the other hand is

the long hours and last minute changes in orders! Do you feel like there is a lot of competition? Of course there is, I’d be lying if I denied it. However, I look at it as a good thing because it pushes me to do better. It’s not a hard task when you genuinely love what you do. Tell us about your team? While I'm training new teammates to help out with basic tasks, as of now Coco Cheri is pretty much run by me alone, including baking marketing and dealing with clients. Given how particular I am about quality, this doesn't comes as a surprise to those close to me. I'm trying to better my delegation skills though! Do you plan on opening up a bakery in the near future? Yes, opening a dessert parlor is something I’m looking into in the coming years! I’m taking it one day at a time though. 30

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2017

Give us 3 tips for running a successful home based bakery? Discipline, research/experimentation and dedication- rules to live by if you want to grow! Our readers would like to know a little about who is behind Coco Chéri? Where are you most likely to be found on weekends? I’m a super relaxed and fun loving person, blessed with the best family and friends. Weekends aren’t really off from work for me, so if you won’t find me in the kitchen you’ll see me surrounded by my loved ones, eating comfort food, playing video and board games or just chilling. Your job revolves around food. How do you stay fit? As much as I’d love to, I don’t really make much of an effort to stay fit. I love food more than most people, so I guess I just have my genes to thank and the fact that I’m generally a very active person. Badminton matches with my husband help as well- I get to win and burn some calories! Any advice you'd like to give to a junior you, who would like to step into the same field? It’s always important to love the art more than the business side of running a bakery. You need to genuinely be in love with what you do and bring your own personal touches to your creations. Don’t get lost in the jungle! Lastly, Where do you see Coco Chéri in another 5 years? With a much bigger clientele and team! I’m actively working towards pursuing them! 2017

We at Paperazzi simply adore Doha return Khizra Waqar. Her hilarious sense of humour and spontaneous comebacks has us in stitches! We promise there won't be a dull moment with this girl around.

hot stuff Saheefa jabbar Khattak has recently been caught on Paperazzi’s radar! This young model is making waves with her bold pixie cut and with her strong stand against online trolls! She is definitely the one to watch out for.

news Keeping up with the Khans! Faryal Makhdooom recently revealed on social media she’s expecting her second baby weeks after a bitter split from boxer, Amir Khan! We wish her good luck and a healthy (drama free) life.

Another break up on our radar? What is happening? I was in a flight to Karachi to attend Sana Bucha’s party when I saw my instagram to see the shocking split between Crescent and Faraz Manan. Why are the Fashion Gods playing this game with poor mortals like us? Here I am, Single for eternity, to the point where people have stopped asking me if I will ever settle down in life (sigh). Lahore was hit by a frenzy of Events. Fawad Khan graced the Republic Launch, HSY was seen at the Contradictions Furniture launch, People shopped till they dropped at FPL Eid Exhibition, My favorite was the Celeste Home Fashion launch, they had such nice things for the house. I ended up buying the whole store! Reema Ahsan showcased some brilliant couture at her soiree and I met my fav journo Amna Niazi at Asma T Salon in DHA. She looked so fab after her Euro Trip with her short hair and Gucci Mules. Hamza Tarar the interior designer per extraordinaire hosted a lavish party for besty Naila Ishtiaq’s birthday where the guest list was Alyzeh Gabol (was that a Gucci suit Girl with Chanel lego clutch?) Asim Buksh and HSY made an appearance, Nickie & Nina the fab designers were there too! Rumor has it that Karachi will witness a legendary soiree by HSY over the Eid Holidays at the Mansion. So are you on the guest list yet? Karachi is so humid that I am sweating all the time! I am only drinking Perrier to survive the party and keep myself hydrated and only eating food from OKRA. Speaking of Parties, Sana Bucha hosted a rocking soiree dazzling in her diamonds. I had a great time catching up with Raheel Rao,

Adeel Hussain (who by the way is a darling) Frieha Altaf was rocking her monochrome outfit and Tena Durrani was shining in chikankari. Amongst others was hottie Kiran Malik, Tooba Siddiqui and Umar Sayeed and as always darlings I was rocking the floor till the morning and made sure that I pose for all the photographers. Yes, yes, seeing is believing. I was jumping with joy when I found out that Khadijah Shah is in Karachi so yours truly went to Ensemble to meet her at her Elan Exhibition, which was buzzing. Also met Meherbano Qureshi, Mahnur, Zeba of Ensemble and Paperazzi’s own Alizah Raza who was enjoying a Pizza as Paperazzi loves to eat. All I can think about right now is a Spa Day Darlings after all its not easy being me. While I was away in Karachi my besty Saamiya Raazi also threw a lunch by poolside to celebrate her Hubbys Birthday. The party was attended by Natty, Mahlia Lone and other prominent faces of Lahore. Called Rezz to find out how super fab the party at Diplomatic Enclave was, where Juju was the Belle of the ball, our very own Juju from Tony and Guy. A Lot of Lahoris invaded Isloo this weekend. Over Eid break I just want to do Yoga and all the healthy living stuff, just like Saba of Soul has taken a lot of girls, Uzma Ramzan, Zarmina & Saira Ahsan to Shingar Fort Serena in the Mountains. So this Eid my motto is living healthy and only drinking coconut water, eating Pizzas and doing Yoga Maybe? On a partying note this week Eid Mubarik to everyone and stay fabulous! Don’t eat too much, and As far as I am concerned, round is a shape! 2017

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I had a week off from college for fall break and needed a change from the corn fields in rural Iowa. Chicago seemed to be the nearest big city to Grinnell and I knew I needed at least a week to explore, especially after hearing all the wonderful things about Chicago from the upperclassmen at Grinnell. Who did you travel with? I took a bus ride to Chicago alone but met up with family and college friends there. Where did you stay? I divided my stay between the hustling and bustling of compact urban housing, and the calm and peaceful suburban environment. For a few nights, I stayed with my first cousin who owns a house near Lincoln park, north of Chicago. The rest of the time, I stayed

travel diaries

with family friends who live in a suburb called Burridge, a thirtyminute drive away from the main city. Most college students who visit Chicago usually book rooms at bread and breakfasts, which is a safe and cost effective option and you can ensure you’re close to the tourist attractions. What are the best shopping spots there? The Magnificent Mile, anchored by three major shopping centers, each with their own distinct appeal is my favorite area to shop in downtown Chicago. It’s a six-block district that has all kinds of shops, ranging from high end designer brands to clothing stores such as forever 21 and ZARA, so no matter what your budget or taste is, you won’t be disappointed. And if you’re a Sephora obsessed freak like me, you’ll be overwhelmed to see a store at almost every block. Being a sugar addict what I personally love more is that there are huge candy stores like Dylan’s

travel diaries

travel diaries

travel diaries

candy bar and Ghiradelli located at every corner of the district.

Tell us about sites no one should miss out on? Chicago has super cool architectural sites so you should definitely visit the Millennium Park to see the Crown Fountain and the Cloud gate most famously known as the “Chicago bean.” I’ve been there during both day and night times and the bean looks magnificent either way. I could honestly spend all day looking at the reflection of Chicago’s skyline and clouds through the steel sculpture. The sky deck of the Willis Tower (Chicago’s tallest building) is also a must see because you get an incredible view of the entire city under your feet. Navy Pier, located along the shoreline of Michigan river, is also a super fun to visit. You can ride the ferris wheel, take sightseeing cruises, play games or just grab some food and enjoy the breeze.

travel diaries

Finally, any tips? I’d suggest planning your itinerary and means of transportation beforehand. I ended up wasting a lot of money on uber rides because my friends and I weren’t very good at navigating our way through the city. You can also download lyft, which is the local version of uber but make sure you use their promotional code before taking your first ride. I didn’t know about this before and could have saved fifty dollars!

Suggest places for a perfect night out? A perfect night out would be to take an architectural river

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? If you like to look at art as a means of relaxing and taking a break, the Art Institute of Chicago is a perfect way to unwind. The institute has a lot of interesting sections that you can probably look at for hours without getting tired. Just don’t spend too much time at the European art exhibit because if you’re not a big fan of paintings, you’ll get bored. I loved the contemporary, miniature art and paperweight displays because they were very intriguing and the aesthetic appeal was highly soothing to my eyes. The museum also has a café with a modern interior if you’re looking for a snack or cup of coffee in the middle of your tour.

travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? I’m not a big fan of steaks but my family took me to Chicago Cut steakhouse in Michigan avenue and their steaks were phenomenal! The bread was delicious and the salad had the best bleu cheese dressing I’ve ever tasted. The restaurant has a patio overlooking the river so make sure you get seated near the windows and get to fully enjoy the view. I’d also highly recommend trying jumbo fried prawns at Grand Lux Café and Chicago’s famous deep dish pizza at Giordano’s.

boat tour. You can choose between an in-depth tour or a brief overview of Chicago. After that head over to Boystown to experience the liveliest nightlife in Chicago. Boystown is a thriving gay neighbourhood and it has very hip and unique bars/dance clubs with eccentric shops and restaurants as well. The place also gives very friendly and safe vibes compared to other areas in Chicago.

It appears as if someone in power is working against your interests today. But this betrayal is an all-too-familiar situation that’s returned for resolution. Retrograde Mercury offers you a chance to eliminate it once and for all. Although it would be easy to blame your nemesis, a smarter tactic is to consider your role in this conflict. You may be inadvertently inviting the resistance with your overly forceful approach. Relieve the pressure by backing off for now. Publicist Jessica Hatchigan wrote,“There’s an important difference between giving up and letting go.”

Interpersonal intrigue adds complications to your life today as conversations tread into uncharted territory. Although a discussion can reveal buried feelings, the outcome is relief once the truth is told. You have an opportunity to evolve and a chance to deepen an existing relationship now, if you’re willing to place yourself in a position of vulnerability. Change doesn’t come easily to your fixed nature, but opening your heart brings sweet rewards. Babe Ruth said,“Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”

You can shock and amaze your colleagues when you go right for the jugular in a delicate conversation today. Oddly enough, it is often upsetting when others are so direct in their approach, but you seem to pull it off now with little collateral damage. Mischievous Mercury’s current collaboration with shadowy Pluto allows you to combine lighthearted communication with an intense perspective. Don’t pull any punches; clear the air for a fresh start. Honesty saves everyone’s time.

Resolving a misunderstanding between you and a close friend is at the top of your list today. At first, you seem to be all over the map but your position becomes clear as you continue to talk. Perhaps your windup is slow, but your pitch is fast and smooth once you have an engaged audience. But don’t overstay your welcome; say what you must and then respectfully bow out. Rest assured your words will have their intended impact, but it might take time for your message to sink in. James N. Watkins wrote,“A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence.”

An interpersonal or interdepartmental conflict at work can bring you out of your corner and directly into the fray today. It’s not that you’re looking for trouble; it’s just that you want to play your part in ameliorating the tension that’s distracting people from doing their jobs. Instead of climbing up on a soapbox and shouting your opinions, you can be a more effective agent of change now by asking intelligent questions. Naturally, gathering the facts helps you clarify your position, but it also enables everyone else to become more informed, too. Diplomacy is your friend.

You are not interested in dredging up more data today; you’re already swimming in a sea of unrelated facts. Instead, you can apply your expertise to a complicated situation at work by looking for patterns in what you already know. Focus on analysis rather than investigation. Isolate the most important points and then connect the dots so everyone can see things the way you do. Indonesian sci-fi writer Toba Beta wrote,“We begin to learn wisely when we're willing to see the world from other people's perspectives.”

You are like a dog with a bone; you’re on to something special and no one is going to take it away from you. You are not typically one to stir up conflict, but you won’t avoid it today if you think you’re being manipulated. You believe your cause is worth fighting for now. Of course, you understand that everyone has their own agenda, but yours is one that is inclusive. You encourage others to pursue their own paths, but you demand the same support in return. Thankfully, the prognosis for your victory is excellent as long as you don’t get sidetracked by a drama that is not yours.

You’re ready to go to bat for your friends because you know they would do the same for you. Messenger Mercury is working in cohorts with potent Pluto, serving you an extra dose of courage. You don’t take your relationships casually and are willing to accept any criticism that might result as you cut to the chase. But don’t become too attached to achieving results. Since Mercury is still retrograde, it could take several days before you begin to see progress. It’s been said that there is no such thing as failure, only delayed success.

Sometimes it feels as if your world is moving in slow motion, even though you are going at full speed. Your frustration level could be on the rise now if your values clash with those of your boss. You can’t decide whether to hold your ground and fight for your beliefs, or to wait for a better moment to make a stand. If possible, put off making a final decision until tomorrow when the path ahead becomes less rocky and more certain. Eleanor Roosevelt said,“With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.”

You know how the system is supposed to work, but somehow crossed wires are messing with the results. Rather than untangling the current communication snafu, you want to get to the bottom of the chaos by fixing the structure itself. Unfortunately, the way out of this dilemma is complicated by the fact that some key players won’t even acknowledge there’s a problem. There’s no point in trying to push your position now; change is more likely if people realize the truth on their own. Discerning the difference between what you can control and what you can’t saves the day.

You’re unhappy with the current direction that’s being taken at work today. However, you don’t think it’s in your best interest to spend your time and energy fighting against the status quo, especially if your beliefs are in the minority. Fortunately, you know that right action is a moral issue and that truth is on your side now. You’re begrudgingly willing to temporarily acquiesce to the group while you develop an alternative plan. Keep the faith; your moment in the spotlight is coming sooner than you think.

You’re busy mustering support for one of your pet causes but can’t understand why others are slow to rally their enthusiasm today. But the current lack of help might not be an indication that your proposed course of action is a bad one. It’s more likely that the weak link in the chain is your presentation rather than your proposition. Fortunately, your chances will improve once cerebral Mercury turns direct next week. In the meantime, continue to solidify your plan while rehearsing your performance. Cicero wrote,“We should be as careful of our words as of our actions.”
