ABOUT ME:

imrana tanveer What is a superpower you wish you had?

I just wanted to have a Magic wand but the very next moment I'm realistic and practical.

Who are your real life heroes?

My mother and husband

Your most favourite word: Ya Khuda

What first drew you to the arts?

Arts always attracts me. I think I was born into it. It was with me since the beginning. But I decided it quite later in my life to pursue it as a profession. I was drawing and painting on whatever I could get my hands on, any flat surface, walls, pots, newspapers etc. I found arts in anything and everything.

What is your background in the arts?

My father always wanted me to be a doctor so he never thought of polishing my artistic instincts, nor was it entertained in the conservative social and familial structure of our country/family. I graduated from the Textile Institute of Pakistan, Karachi as a textile designer in 2008 and started working in the denim industry. Working there I realized that I am not the kind of designer who just sits in a studio and makes (copies) readymade designs. I wanted to draw and create designs of my own, but the market and industry didn't allow me due to design limitations/restrictions. After a year and a half working in the industry, I quit my job and one of my dearest friend (now my husband, lol) suggested me to join the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore. I joined the Master program in Visual Arts in 2010. Those two years were crucial, as well as helpful in developing and polishing the artist in me. It was hard to understand and learn in an art school as compared to having a background in design, but eventually I learned how to amalgamate design/textiles and art to the point where it speaks out loudly.

Where do you derive your inspiration from?

A lot of my inspiration and appreciation of art developed during my undergraduate studies while learning Art History and Art Appreciation. Today, the role of social media is 30

also very important. I too spend a lot of my time on the social media websites, my most immediate influences and inspirations come from these platforms.

Are they any particular art movements that inspire you?

I'm really fond of management Art movements. Some movements really inspires me and I appropriated many works from Different Art movements (e.g. Pop Art, Classical, Renaissance etc.) in my works. and sometimes I just flip the books and delight my eyes through the history of Arts.

Can you walk us through the process of developing your work?

The tactile quality of the textiles and the use of bold and primary colors are my formal concerns; it gives me much freedom of exploration and expression. Right now I am focusing on weaving, it is a very vast medium in terms of exploration and experimentation.

Does art have a calming or exciting effect on your being?

It gives me mixed effects. Sometimes its exciting and sometimes it is really disturbing for me too. The process of creating is disturbing, my mind stay awakes and keeps thinking while I'm asleep and it is really painful.

Would you say you are an avid reader? Does reading play a role in your creative process?

I do read occasionally. The writings of Franz Kafka, Khalil Gibran, George Orwell, Orhan Pamuk, Takashi Murakami and Nizar Qabbani influenced me. Sometimes poetry too. Love reading Ghalib and Mir but I've poor memory of remembering couplets. The very famous couplet of Ameer Meenai "Sare Jahan Ka Dard Hamaray Jiger Main Hey" can truly be my Artist Statement. I think this is the reason why my art practice addresses so many issues and concerns at the same time.

Who would you say is your mentor?

Can't truly name any one. In this age of technology when we are continuously bombarded with media and everything is just a click away works of international artists and modern fairs and biennials are really helpful in shaping one's own practice. I really love and admire the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Yinka Shinabore, Ruby Chishti, Risham Saeed, Anish Kapoor, Ai Weiwei and Do-Ho Suh. Tell us about your favorite piece.

Its like asking a mother who is your favorite child! My work is really dear to me but the most favorite one is "Post Betrayal". The work “Post Betrayal” was an installation canopy from my thesis work, which evolved and formed after I purchased the camouflage fabric. The market from which I bought the fabric used it to make canopies for shelter from the sun and to cover goods on trucks in bad weather conditions during transportation. The parachute camouflage is also used for tents.

I wanted to use that canopy and the process of punching holes by overdoing and repeating the process of punching rivets numerous times: thousands of small metallic rivets punched on camouflage tent representing bullet holes. The purpose of the tent is to protect and provide shelter and the rivet is used to strengthen it, but by overdoing the punching, it represents our own behavior and attitude towards the safety of the state and borders. Also this work got selected for a tour exhibition to US which had to be curated by Imran Qureshi but unfortunately due to lack of funding and as stated by the organizers "...we were unable to get a single American museum to make a firm commitment..." the exhibition got cancelled.

What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career so far?

When my very first solo exhibition titled “I Saw Two Crows Building a Nest under His Hat” at Taseer Art Gallery, Lahore was considered the best TOP 10 exhibitions of 2013 in line with Monir Farmanfarmaian, Reza Derakshani, Rana Begum and Maïmouna Guerresi to name few by Islamic Art Magazine.

What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did?

I don't know, I never thought about it. (Well when they "Seen" my work but don't hit the "Like" LOL ) What advice would you give to a younger you?

Stay Focused and never ever waste time.

Create a dewy base: After applying your sunblock and moisturizer, the first step towards getting that radiant look for your face is by creating an ideal base. To do so add a very tiny drop of Mac's strobe cream to your daily wear foundation (of your original skin tone preferably) and mix them well with a foundation brush on the back of your hand. Apply the mixture onto your face with the brush and blend it in with a beauty blender. For a luminous look my 3 favorite foundations are Giorgio Armani's luminous silk foundation, Mac's studio fix and Estee Lauder's Double Wear foundation.

Set it: To add a flawless finish to your base use a translucent setting powder on top. My two favorites are Chanel's translucent natural finish loose powder and Laura Mercier's setting powder.

Bronze it up: You know the summer look isn’t complete without the ideal bronzer to add up to your glow. Benefit's Hoola matte bronzer is just the right one to apply right under your cheek bones to give you that perfect sun kissed look!

Ace the glow game: ATLAST! The most essential part of getting to your look is picking the right highlighter to apply to your T zones. (Bridge of the nose, forehead, tip of the chin, cupids bow, above the cheek bones.) In picking the right highlighter know that you don’t want anything over the top, it has to give a very natural even looking finish to your face. My top favorite highlighters to use on your T zones are Benefits Watts up, Becca's Champagne pop, Anastasia Beverly Hill's So Hollywood and Mary Lou Manizer. Picture – Watts up and Becca.

The final touch: Once you're done with all these steps it's time to give that final touch that will not only make your glow last longer but add an airbrushed effect to it. The right fixing spray! My two favorites are Mac Prep + Prime Fix spray and L'Oréal's Infallible Fixing Mist. Just spray them on with a distance of a few inches from your face and you're all set to go!

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Where did you choose to go and why?

I went to New York – I was there for my daughter’s delivery and quite frankly, it really is the best city for learning. I took a series of professional culinary courses at the prestigious L'École Valrhona for chocolate and petit sweets. The courses were attended by professional chefs averaging 15 years of experience each. These chefs had come from different parts of the world such as North and South America, Canada and myself from Pakistan. The course was very extensive. We used to be on our feet for 10 hours every day! I also took a bread course at French Culinary Center, to learn about different kinds of breads and to refresh my knowledge on breads which, as a chef, is critically important. I learned

how to use Pakistani herbs in different kinds of breads. I then took classes at the International Culinary Center specific to cupcakes. The focus there was on pairing different flavors. It was very interesting to learn how to create perfect combinations of two different flavors. Over here we mostly know about chocolate and how to pair this with other food such as strawberries, coconut, bananas; we don’t think of the possibility of more flavors.

Who did you travel with?

Alone- My daughter Madiha and my granddaughter were already there.

What are the best shopping spots there?

I shopped mostly for my bakery and kitchen stuff. There were places next to ICE where I had gone to for my cupcake course.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind?

For me personally, learning is what I find most relaxing.

Hence, the classes I took were my relaxing period. Other than my classes, I would enjoy taking my granddaughter and her friends out. The weather was so beautiful that I would love to go out with my friends- to parks, to the zoo. It was great fun.

Finally, any tips?

New York is such an exciting, fun and happening place. There is always a lot going on. There is a lot to do and a lot to see; if you’re there you should definitely try to make the most out of it. Explore the city, go out and see different sights!

Suggest places for a perfect night out I’m not really a night person. When I wasn’t in class, I was babysitting so I couldn’t go out at night anyway. When I was younger, I used to be with my kids too. I didn’t want to leave them so I wouldn’t go out much then either. Now I just don’t like going out in general. My friends and I would love to go for walks or spend time in the park.

The Dominque Ansel bakery had amazing cronuts. They are actually quite famous for their cronuts.
