I chose this object because it reminds me of my childhood and my parents. It reminds me of how they used to celebrate the joyous days of Pakistan. It sure was a great decade.

Recently, an opulent art affair took place at Amin Gulgee’s Art gallery in Karachi.

The exhibition showcased around forty artists and was curated by none other than the maestros Amin Gulgee and Nilofer Farrukh. The curators aimed to foreground the ambivalent legacy of the 1970’s by celebrating the exuberance of the 70’s cinema, music and art in Pakistan and highlighting the political and cultural challenges faced during that decade. our The show aimed at analyzing the cultural life of the country and how it withstood the political vagaries of time. In this exclusive piece, we speak to some of the artists about their inspiration behind their great work.

My work is based on a Herald Cover which shows the rapidly changing trends of the 70's. It was decade of oscillation and liberalism in Pakistan where political and cultural roles had quite literally changed the map of the country. Live music, great food, lots of alcohol, dancing and cinemas continued to thraive and religiosity remained a private matter. However, this phenomenon also set into motion a concerned discourse questioning the limits of the emerging trends within the country’s middle class youth.

If Pakistan had deep roots in religious extremism, military rule and corruption, there was still an important part of the country’s history that radiated a more confident, progressive, tolerant and joyous Pakistan.

THE POST BOXES

The 70's were a time when people actually started expresing themselves in numerous ways, indulging with one another on a regular basis whether it be cinemas, political rallies or even visits to shrines etc. My choice of object, the post box, reflects the coming together of individuals in society at that time when the object itself was the primary mode of communication in a vibrant, terror-free and accommodative state. The different sized boxes represent the different classes of society.

THE 70'S

I wanted to curate something very unpretentious which is why I chose to recollect my mother’s memories from the 70’s in the form of her photos, letters and some images she choose which represented the zest of that decade.

My work was a collection of Bangla war songs. The audio is played via an actual radio from the 70s and set up in the courtyard like I imagine someone would access this music in East Pakistan during the 1971 war. Radio played a central role in disseminating information at that time and it is telling that most people in Pakistan do not know about the existence of these Bangla songs and few admit to the scale of genocide our army undertook in East Pakistan.

Though the songs are sweet sounding and may appear nostalgic, they do not romanticize the 70s as the golden era at all but rather remind us of a giant loss and how we are disconnected with the reality of our own people.

MEMORIES FROM THE 70'S

My art on five wooden diaries symbolizes the stages I went through from the 70’s till now. The first diary has three silver boxes which are Jinnah's famous words Unity, Faith and Discipline on which our nation was built, the second diary represents the sacrifices our elders gave for this homeland and the third diary has Bhutto's words "Tum idar Hum udar” on it. The fourth diary has East and West Pakistan maps on them and the last diary has a hazy background with figures of Rotti, Kapra and Makaan. The slogan which turned the nation of literates into a modern day nation of beggars. No nation can base its ideologies and fundamentals on greed and corruption. The era of 70’s still plays on my mind. It’s the time when me and my parents had recently migrated to Pakistan and having witnessed all this during sixty years of life is tragic.

I took the illustrative approach to the 70’s as to me the era of 70’s is only through the history texts. I worked with three hundred drawings and then animated those for this video work of mine. I have illustrated the journey from the joyous days of the 70s and the cinema and then on to the dark days.

My short video was on Tassaduq Sohail’s journey in the 70’s that made him the artist that he is today. I felt it was very important for me know and share his experience as he is one of Pakistan’s greatest and most respected living artist.

THROUGH THE LENS OF MUSHTAQ GAZDAR

The inspiration behind this is taken from my father's original footage from that decade. He was then a budding filmmaker who had set up his own film company in 1967. To me the 70's to me represents a lot of crests and troughs of political waves in Pakistan. Hence the clip has the vigour and dynamism of the early to mid 70s when laws were made to empower the labour force, industries were being set up and there was a momentum towards education and equal rights for women. But all this is brought to an abrupt halt when in 1977 Martial Law was declared and all opposition put down brutally. My father is probably the only independent filmmaker who managed to film a public flogging and I included that shot in this clip as to me it is representative of the worst of the 70s.

NASEHEMAN CINEMA

To me, Naseheman Cinema is one of the iconic landmarks of Karachi from the decade of 70’s when discos, music and theaters were thriving. The interiors and finishing of this cinema is reflective of this great period.

THE ALLEGORY OF CHANGE AND TRACES

The 70s saw the upsurge of a simultaneous presence of highly disparate architecture, peoples, spaces and buildings – one of the characteristics of the free-market model of capitalist urban development. The rhetorical potential of such enclaves for poetic, surreal juxtapositions was beautifully illustrated in architecture adorning the city corners of Rawalpindi. In ‘Allegory of Change’ and ‘Traces’, I chose to feature the façades of Nishat Cinema (originally founded in the ‘40s but refurbished to an Art Deco makeover in the ‘70s) and Habib Bank Building on The Mall (facsimile of a Mughal or Sultanate edifice replete with fretwork et al).

The investigation of documented history is what defines my practice. A premeditated, calculative and exhaustive analysis of how history through its ages, in all its forms of documentation has been miscontextualized, where facts are made ambiguous so that they are not lies, yet they bear no semblance of the truth either. Where the lies used are also not lies, but retarded saplings of imperialistic ideals or just plain autocratic ego and hate. I use these contradictions and fragments of truths to find the poetry within. Where actualities merge and decimate into a fiction that could be, and that is the realm which reverberates with verses.

I was inspired by the music of the 70’s as it was time when Pakistan’s music industry was producing great work. I wanted to create a dark drawing of Zia ul Haq since during this tenure he had suppressed many artists and musicians. Hence I chose the erasing drawing method as a conscious effort to give it a hazy dark appeal.

Why do you like styling hair? Is it your passion?

Yes. Also the fact that I love women, especially a client who wants to look a specific way and is passionate about her vibe. I love the challenge and the feeling of succeeding when I see the smile on my clients face. I never say I can deliver and don’t!

What is your greatest strength as a stylist?

I look at myself every morning and thank God that I am born with a gift, a talent. To fulfill my potential I work hard and grab all the opportunities that come my way at the right time before someone else grabs them!

Tell us about your experience in the beauty industry?

It’s such a beautiful business. I’m not just a hair dresser, I consider myself more than that. You are considered a doctor to some people, a psychologist in this field. While for some you’re a close friend. It’s not the story of a hairdresser; it’s the story of friendship that you share with your clients.

You can never know the clients. Sometimes they sleep on something different and when they walk in to the salon next morning they’ll want something completely different, every woman has a common ideology. A woman wants to look perfect and for that she wants her hairdresser to be perfect. It’s upon the hairdresser to identify and fulfill whatever she wants.
