the ballet collection Studio S prides itself in paying homage to the arts with every collection. Our latest luxury pret - collection takes inspiration from the beautifully complex world of the ballet.

The Russian ballet Swan Lake, Russian royal jewels, and the dreamy ballet paintings of Edgar Degas are in special focus.

The silhouettes are highly contemporary, yet retain a high glamour quotient. Zohra Rahman collaborated with Studio S to design customized pieces for The Ballet collection.

What advice would you give to a younger you?

Never stop working. Keep working because things will get better.

Abdul Sattar Edhi

What is your background in the arts?

I don’t really have arts running in the family. It was just very instinctive for me to pursue it. People have a feeling that artists won’t really end up making money out of their passion but luckily my family didn’t discourage me for those reasons. I am thankful for them having faith.

Where do you derive your inspiration from?

I go through art books. I also like going through women’s pen drawings in Urdu Magazines. But honestly I derive my inspiration from everyday things like talking to people, listening to their stories and connecting with human emotion. A good weather, a great outfit, anything can trigger my creative process.

Are they any particular art movements that inspire you?

I relate a lot to the expressionism movement. The works of geniuses like Lucian Freud & Francis Bacon really interest me. The loud images the movement has created appeals to me.

Can you walk us through the process of developing your work?

My work is never pre-planned. I start with a blank canvas and create a portrait. The portrait is my, “Once upon a time…”. I begin with a portrait and create a character. The process is spontaneous. I could begin with a specific idea and end up with 44

something totally unexpected. I may even end up surprising myself. One thing that remains constant is that my figure is the main focus of my work.

Does art have a calming or exciting effect on your being?

My work is my diary. It’s a catharsis. You could start a piece when you’re angry or confused or happy and take it all out on the canvas. The art takes up all your energy. It isn’t always one way.

Would you say you are an avid reader? Does reading play a role in your creative process?

I read a lot but not about art. I consume fiction. Fiction helps my imagination run wild. Music also plays a strong role in my creative process. What I listen to, gives me mental images that later develop on my canvas.

Who would you say is your mentor?

R.M. Naeem, my teacher at N.C.A.. He helped me develop my work through his tutoring. I knew how to draw but I struggled with what to draw. He helped me find my direction and that guidance helps me to this day.

Tell us about your favorite piece.

I love all my work. It’s very difficult to choose between your creations but there is this one piece that really helped me grow. It was called, “There was once an Old Man in a Velvet Coat”. I’ve been drawing female figures as my subjects but with this painting I stepped out of my comfort zone and worked on two male figures. I drew it for my solo show at the Canvas Gallery and the response was terrific. This one helped me grow. It was a turning point for me as an artist.

What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career so far?

Last year in March, I curated my first solo show. It was a very frightening experience putting it together but once it was done, I was very proud of myself. It did really well.

Do your fashion choices take influence from the art you create? Do you see a similar vein run through both?

It does sometimes. I work with foliage in my paintings and I do like buying printed outfits, with intricate foliage work on them. I am a working woman and on regular days my dressing is more functional.

It is said that great art comes from terribly sensitive souls. Would you agree or disagree to the statement?

I absolutely agree with that. That is what separates artists from regular people. An artist can take a seemingly insignificant, routine visual that others may not even register and eternalise it on canvas.

What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did?

People always ask how I create or begin my work but nobody ever asks how difficult it is to give away your work. There is such a strong emotional connection that develops between an artist and their artwork while it’s being created. When you have to let it go it’s actually a difficult process.

I’m working on my pieces right now, everyday. I’m focused on what I want to make.
