her pieces are showstoppers in themselves; the signature studio s aesthetic draws heavily from artists and their greatest works. seher tareen weaves magic with the charm of feminine embellishments poised ever so delicately with minimalistic silhouettes. this fall she's gearing up to launch her online store with the monochrome collection.

Walk us through the design process behind The Monochrome Collection. What is the artistic vision behind it?

This is essentially a capsule collection, one that's very close to my heart. All my existing lines have been inspired from one form of art or another. Be it a painting, an artist or an art movement. So I went through my archives and picked up different cuts, motifs and embellishments to make one cohesive collection.

As the name suggests, this is a black and white collection. What should one expect in terms of the pieces you've designed and the general mood of the range?

Since its my Autumn/Winter line, I focused entirely on outerwear, mainly coats, jackets and kimonos in varying hues of black and white dusted with gold embellishments. I find it fascinating when different people interpret my designs differently and I love watching people express their individual styles through my pieces.

Your current collection is an ode to your previous lines.Tell us a bit more.

The collections that have inspired the Monochrome Collection are the Klimt Collection 2014 (inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt), the Emperor's Assassins (inspired by the Chinese cult movie Hero) and the Wedding Procession (inspired by Mughal miniature painting, the Wedding Procession of Darah Shikoh).

Tell us about your online store and its conception.

We go live on the 1st of October and I couldn't be more thrilled! It's months of hardwork finally seeing the light of day. Launching the store with the Monochrome Collection was just our way of introducing the website to the world. We've been overwhelmed with a great response and coming up with an online portal was naturally the next step forward. Since we will be shipping not just nationwide but internationally as well, we'll be better equipped to meet any surges in demand.

The online store is a great avenue to connect with the global audience. Was this by default or by design?

We realised that there was a growing demand for our designs especially internationally so it was very much by design that we wanted to create an online retail platform to make our collections readily available to our national clientele. With an online shop, our clients can benefit from the 'see now buy now' philosophy that the fashion world is adapting worldwide. Plus, it puts Studio S on the fashion map internationally; we will be exhibiting at the Boulevard 1 in Dubai the same day as the online store launch. So yes, it was pre planned.

What are your fabrics of choice for this collection?

The fabrics we've used are charmeuse silk and organza.

It's a balance between fluidity and structure. The hard and soft fabrics accentuate the yin and yang of the monochrome palette.

What are some of the trends that you're loving this A/W? I am loving the growing trend of minimalism in design.

I have an aversion to colour at the moment and find myself gravitating towards black, white and neutral.

Describe your personal style.

I like to think my personal style is a balancing act between the classic and the contemporary.

If given the chance, which yesteryear beauty would you want to design for?

I would like to see Peggy Guggenheim wearing a piece inspired by the modern art she loved so much!

Your thoughts on the rapidly evolving fashion landscape in Pakistan?

I think its great!

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Where did you choose to go and why?

Summer was passing by and my family and I were getting agitated by the fact that our busy routines had not let us travel anywhere this year. Same dull routine, day in day out was getting to all of us and we desperately needed a change of environment to recharge ourselves. So, we availed the first chance that we got: Eid ul Azha holidays! We planned a quick trip to the North of Pakistan, Swat Valley which rises in the Hindu Kush range.

Who did you travel with?

I travelled with my parents & my sister.

Where did you stay?

Our first stop over was at the capital of Swat Valley, Saidu Sharif.

After travelling for almost ten hours, by road, we reached Sarena Hotel, Swat. It is situated in the capital of Swat, Saidu Sharef. However, the main town of Swat is Mingora, and the hotel is almost thirty minutes by walk from

the “downtown” Mingora. Our stay at Sarena was very comfortable and homey. The staff is extremely helpful and quick in their service. The rooms were clean and updated, the food quality and variety was amazing.

After sunset the entire hotel is lit by fairy lights and music starts playing in the food lounge. A local band was playing soft, relaxing live music with local instruments of the region “rabab” and “tabla”. Personally, my favorite part of my stay there was the swimming pool area, it was a short distance from the main part of the hotel. It was isolated from the rooms and reception area, by walking for ten minutes in the lush green gardens of Sarena you enter into the pool area. It was open air with a perfect view of mountain range.

A casual swim under the stars and overlooking the mountains was the best of nature one can get! It was a perfect get away to read a book in the daytime and swim at nighttime!

What are the best shopping spots there?

Well we couldn’t shop much as the shops were all closed due to Eid Holi-

What can you do over there to relax and unwind?

The perfect way to relax and unwind would be to let yourself get as close to the Mother Nature as you can. Let the simplicity of life take over. It’s a perfect place to take a break from the chaos of everyday urban life, try to find your zen! Try the local fresh fruits and nuts; walnut is a specialty of Swat region. Oh don’t forget to swim in the clear blue waters of Mahudand lake to easy your mind and body!

Finally, any tips?

Go and live the experience let the nature amaze you!

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on Okay, so a must visit would be Mahudand lake, after spending three nights in Saidu sharif, we went to another main town, Kalam. The lake is almost 40km from Kalam. The entire jeep ride is very exciting with beautiful view the entire way. The way is a mix of forest and small villages, the forest is full of tall beautiful pine trees, standing like towers all over the mountain range, while the villages are full of local people with happy warm faces with kids running around. Although September marks the beginning of Fall, flowers of all kinds and colors were in full bloom. The sun was bright the particular day

Suggest places for a perfect night out Well, a place for a perfect night out would be out in the open, deep night sky, under the bright moon, with a strong and sweet cup of chai, fresh walnuts from the trees nearby and the company of your loved ones- and grab a warm shawl!

Suggest some amazing restaurants there?

Anyone who is interested in proper, fancy dining can go to Sarena’s restaurant “Savastu” which is open to all and provide 24/7 room service. It covers Desi Cusine, Italian, Chinese and their own local cuisine. Their breakfast brunch is delightful with yummy parathas and sweet pancakes with their local fresh chutneys! Whatelse can you want more in Swat?! However, anyone who is interested in having the local trout can do their live bbq out in the open or go to the small food points in the city Mingora or Kalam. Their fresh-out-of-the-sea trout is a must have!

that we were travelling to the lake, and there were beautiful sunflowers in people’s backyard gardens. The lake itself is mesmerizing and serene. The moment we got there, we completely forgot about the four hour bumpy ride, it’s absolutely worth it. The locals have small tents there for the visitors and are fully stocked with stuff for tea or food! Grilled trout, fresh from the water is available! Yumm. Another place, that was completely new to me was the Bhuddist Stupas that we came across, spread all over the Swat Valley. As you are travelling from Saidu Sharif to Kalam or from Mardan city to Saidu Sharif, on your way you have to look out for small boards that state the place of different Bhuddist Stupas around that area. We stopped at the Shingardara Stupa which was built in 7th Century BC!! It’s a cool experience for anyone who is interested in historic landmarks.

It’s a well decorated, small cozy shop for anyone who is interested in ethnic jewelry and Swati shawls. My mother loved the quality of the shawls there, and the price range was good too while my sister got some cool chokers and earrings for herself. However, I got a few raw stones and postcards for friends abroad. If any of this stuff interests you, visit this shop.

You can find a branch of this in the Sarena hotel as well.

Also my parents were going gaga over the fresh walnuts you get to handpick from the roadside shops!
