nida azwer atelier resort collection 2016 The Nida Azwer Atelier Resort Collection 2016 has been inspired by two of the most influential art movements across time; Art Deco and Art Nouveau. This inspiration is manifest across the fusion based silhouettes and textured collection aesthetic with a focus on separates, prefect to mix and match. What is your style mantra?

Extremely obsessive, unsatisfied

Tell us a little bit about your childhood in Lahore. What role does it play in your work?

My childhood was full of travelling between Pindi, Lahore and the occasional trips to Naran Kaghan. My grandfather used to write his diary and I guess that’s where the fascination with stationary & paper began. My mother was a Kindergarten teacher who’d bring home work that had a lot of hands-on arts & craft work which I would help out with. My father would make us animals & toys out of play doh. I guess the environment in the house naturally helped me incline towards arts.

What first drew you to the arts?

Just the idea of N.C.A. I’d heard of the people and characters from there. I was fascinated by how they lived freely, dressed uniquely and had an air of cool about them. I felt they didn’t care about what people thought of them and lived in their own world. I was fascinated by what went on behind the walls of the institution that had produced such geniuses.

What is your background in the arts?

I was studying at Bahria University and was absolutely out of place there.

One night before my economics exam, I sat, trying to concentrate when my friend asked me whether I was genuinely happy with my decision to study humanities at Bahria. I walked up to my parents the same night and told them I would not be appearing for this exam! They’ve always been understanding and so that’s when I decided to follow my passion. I applied to N.C.A., got accepted and never looked back!

Where do you get your inspiration from?Are they any particular art movements that inspire you?

My inspiration came from how people react to situations, how they’re so similar and dissimilar in situations. How people want to be the perfect package to please someone; like being the perfect housewife, husband, daughter, employee and wanting to be seeking someone’s appreciation and in the process becoming a brand and kind of layering yourself with sth you’re really not. The kind of superficiality that prevails is sth that always bothers me and is sth that keeps me going. With it come strands of concerns that are with me right now. When you step out of your immediate culture and step back in you understand stuff with a lot more clarity. It’s important to deconstruct and unlearn to understand better.

My masters was in Art Education and worked in artistic development of children and worked with children. Children’s work gives me the most energy. I find the work created by elders to be constipated, inhibited and trained. It’s so planned and loses the essence of it. Children have a knack of being bold and honest and so their work never is inhibited.

I am very pulled towards abstract expressionism. I have followed artists the likes of Robert Rauschenberg & Cytyombly from the 60s and 70s era. I also admire Qudus Mirza and Armagori.

Can you walk us through the process of developing your work?

It is challenging to convey a complete experience and engage the viewer in a 2D experience. It could start with a random act like driving down the road.

Something that makes me question a notion or idea; it could be a billboard, ppl praying, or a family sitting on a bike. When I’m ready, I’ll curate these experiences and begin. There’s a lot of creating, erasing and redoing. I am proud of being brave enough to erase my work and let my instincts lead me.

I work with plenty of layering and have to push myself to stop looking at my work to be able to resolve it!

You use a lot of text in your work. Is there a theme or message you're trying to give?

Initially the text was part of the visual as a mark and was not meant to be a reading agent. In recent works it has been used as a reference to help people make direct associations.

Who is your mentor?

It would be really unfair for me to take a single name. There’s so many people who help us through our journeys. People we can’t even maybe name may have helped us with or without our knowledge in becoming who we are today.

Tell us about your favourite piece.

I created this project out of an old cassette player, removed the reel and rolled in paper with people’s opinion on what they find to be the best thing about Pakistan. The piece was precious to me for the idea it presented. We are so cynical and hopeless about Pakistan that we forget to acknowledge the good happening around us. You see the people going abroad from Pakistan barely ever have anything positive to say about it. Even when friends sit together it’s always a highlight on the negatives.

I say, fix yourself; if you’re seeing something wrong around you, change it. It’s bad for a community to feel hopeless. I feel as cultural practitioners it’s our responsibility to create dialogue around what’s positive and highlight the good emerging around us.

We read that you are working on a novel which is based on a family in Lahore. Can you tell us more about this?

We’ve been working with Idaara-e-taleem-oagaahi on a project mapping migrations of people from India, Burma and Bangladesh into Pakitsan.

We’ve interviewed children and their parents or grandparents and created visual narratives of their lives. This is a trilingual publication and its biggest component is its visual one. We are waiting on the final edit and the publication is expected to release soon.

What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did?

This Question!

What advice would you give to a younger you?

I would like to tell my younger self to set her priorities. I’d like to tell her to hold one thread and everything will follow. I’d tell her to be more sure of herself and less aggressive. I’d ask her to control her instant reactions on things and be more settled and less in a state of transition all the time.

Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for?

I’ll soon be doing two presentations and a panel discussion in Chicago. One of the presentations is regarding the Mapping Migration Project we just spoke of and the other is a public art project by Karachi Youth Initiative in collaboration with Indus Valley School of Arts & Architecture. The Panel discussion is regarding how projects like the latter mentioned can become part of school curricula.

We’ve also received a grant to carry out a series of arts workshops with blind people in order to understand creative expressions through senses other than vision. The location has yet to be confirmed.

What is the quality you most admire in people?

To be more contained and to be able to choose my words more wisely.

Most important things in your life: My work- it is my ibaadat. Other than that sincerity, integrity and commitment.
