this year the star studded bridal couture week gold edition exhibited a huge variety of collections showcased by many designers old and new. with wedding season just around the corner (after ramzan), brides and their families have more and more options for each festive occasion. paperazzi picked out the top 4 collections that really set the bar high this year.

tena durrani The collection titled "Mon Reve" was one that showed extravagance and finesse. The colour palette was all kept festive with peaches, golds, ivories and Maroons. We noticed an exceptional detailing with scallop bordering and extremely intricate embroidery with cut work to tie the collection together. Silhouettes were mostly kept knee length with lehengas, which is the most preferred by brides these days and fabrics such as chiffon, cotton net and jamavar were seen throughout. If you're looking for classic traditional intricate outfits for a weddingTena Durrani is your one stop shop!

zainab chottani The Daastan collection was one dreamy one. The all white and ivory segment of the collection was empowering on its own and absolutely breathtaking. We loved the use of midnight blues, a refreshing change to the colourful collections of the season. Ranging from all types of styles to suit ones needs; gowns, shararas, dhaka pajamas, bell bottoms and even the uber chic dhoti shalwar were seen on ramp. With Zainab's signature work and embroidery this collection was a huge hit on the ramp.

We have been very impressed with Sonya Batlas recent collection at FPW and were very eager to see what she has in store for us in her first ever Bridal Collection and goes without saying, she made a very strong debut. Her bridal collection kept the essence of her brand which is feminine but minimalistic at the same time. Her white with dull gold embroidery and detailing was a treat to the eyes as she walked us through towards the more festive and colourful pieces. In a nutshell, this collection had something to suit everyone's taste and the best part was that her menswear was kept minimalistic but sharp, just like our boys like it, as opposed to fully embroidered and embellished sherwanis.

Fahad Hussayn We loved the Fahad Hussayn collection for one main reason which is he kept it as edgy as always. The collection "Dulha Bhatti" showed clear inspiration from a Rajput freedom fighter.

The belted silhouettes with haute couture minimalistic 3D embroidery on net always steal our hearts.

The collection included formal jackets, cropped silhouettes, signature couture gowns and sophisticated saris as well as an exceptional menswear line. The embroidery was as usual exceptional and intricate and stood out with the use Swarovski crystals. Fahad Hussayn showed us a very non mainstream collection for brides and wedding season and we loved it.

Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for?

Mark your calendars for May! I’ll be showcasing my latest collection at Taseer Art Gallery.

What advice would you give to a younger you?

I don’t have any regrets, I’ve been crazy, emotional, stupid and irrational but I’ve learnt a huge deal from all of it so I wouldn’t change a thing.

Your most favourite word: Chuss

What first drew you to the arts?

The very first few memories I can remember are, collecting music CDs and using the album covers to make collages on the walls of my room. I was also very fond of covering every blank space I could find with song lyrics. I often bought punk rock band posters, that weren’t exactly acceptable to my mother, and had them plastered all over my walls. The more I was asked to take them down, the more I continued and eventually my room and my surroundings were a burst of pop culture visuals, song lyrics, and album collages. I realized eventually how important art became in my life, and had never doubted my decision to take it up professionally, ever since.

What is your background in the arts?

I took Art as a subject in my O and A Levels and excelled in both and went on to do my BFA from the National College of Arts in Lahore. I have displayed my work in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. I am now a member of the Fine Arts faculty at NCA and am looking forward to starting my MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design this fall.

Where do you derive your inspiration from?

It’s a natural process. I’m never able to choose a specific topic or object that inspires me.

I can be confronted by an object and be interested in a specific thing about it, and the context develops simultaneously. I never try to create a context artificially.

I’m inspired by the things I do, the things I don’t, the things I’m not allowed to do and the norms of the society in general. I like forming comparisons with the doses of freedom I’ve experienced in the form of traveling and art residencies to the environment I’ve been brought up in. This has ultimately helped me create a dialogue between different cultures and the 30

shutters in my work represent exactly that – the freedom which can be seen and felt but never achieved completely. I recently started fading out a lot of my visuals, only because the imagery might be unacceptable to some of the viewers.

Are they any particular art movements that inspire you?

I love when the world started embracing modern art. When the concept and idea became stronger than the skill and when urinals found their way into art galleries.

Can you walk us through the process of developing your work?

There has to be a particular structure before starting, and then a pattern starts forming which turns into a series of experiments. I do a lot of photography and put together a number of references before deciding on what visuals to create. I often have overlapping concepts or ideas going on in my head which results in my work being extremely layered.

Does art have a calming or exciting effect on your being?

Whether it’s calming or exciting or nerve wrecking it’s a permanent part of my life and I embrace all that comes with it.

Would you say you are an avid reader? Does reading play a role in your creative process?

I find myself reading books that create surreal settings in my head, like works by Murakami, for example. I love his talking cats, libraries that have parallel worlds inside them and the Beatles inspired book titles. I do love reading so it might play a role subconsciously and naturally but I don’t form connections with my creative process forcefully.

Who would you say is your mentor?

I have been privileged to work with some of the finest minds in the arts. My work has been guided and improved through the wisdom of Saba Khan, Quddus Mirza and Ali Kazim.

Tell us about your favorite piece.

I usually keep disregarding my previous pieces as my work evolves, however if I were to choose one I would say ‘New York calling’ has to be one of my favorites; I began the shutter series from that point and began realizing that some visuals do justice to the concepts just as photographs and I don’t really need to paint. Apart from that, I’m currently working on a series called ‘the pre-marital series’ I plan to display at the Taseer gallery end of May – I like it so much because it is honest and experimental, it’s completely relevant to my daily experiences.

What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career so far?

When I ship my pieces, often heavy and large structures to galleries for exhibitions, I always get overwhelmed by the sheer scale of my work. When I think that there are people out there who actually make the investment to buy pieces that occupy so much space in their homes, it makes me grateful to be doing what I do. Being accepted into one of the most prestigious and selective art colleges in the world was definitely up there as well. The Rhode Island School of design MFA program only accepts 10 students from all over the world, and given that Shazia Sikander and Salima Hashmi are amongst its graduates makes it even more challenging and exciting.

Do your fashion choices take influence from the art you create? Do you see a similar vein run through both.

I would walk through life in pajamas if I could, I like winged eyeliner, and love experimenting with my look. I keep getting my hair in cornrow braids every now and then because I don’t have to style them every day that way. I’m also heavily into wearing out my converse shoes.

It is said that great art comes from terribly sensitive souls. Would you agree or disagree to the statement?

Agreed. Well, I can’t generalize but it takes a certain type of sensitivity to feel and see differently.

What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did?

I have a lot of questions that I don’t want to be asked.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Where did you choose to go and why?

I chose Dubai this time because I had only one week off from work. It's a short flight so you don't waste a lot of time in travelling. Not to forget it's my hometown, I was born and grew up in Dubai so I've a lot of friends and family there.

I've travelled almost half of the world and Dubai is still one of my favourite countries.

Who did you travel with?

I mostly travel alone because when I'm vacationing it's my ME time and I make the most of it by spending time with myself. I think it's very important to be able to be alone and independent.

Where did you stay?

I stayed at my best friend's Eisha Salim house. Late night chit-chats, cooking together, movie marathons, random plans, walking down the street, swimming and what not. We really had a good time together.

What are the best shopping spots there?

Dubai trip is of course incomplete without shopping. Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates are definitely the best shopping spots. You get everything under one roof, what else one could ask for.

Everyone has a different way to unwind, for me a long walk on the beach does the miracle. The beach house, Anantara is a perfect spot to unwind, you can sit there for hours enjoying the food and nature.

Finally any tips?

Tips would be that don't exert yourself when you are travelling, go at your pace and make the most of it. You cannot see the whole world in a lifetime so don't even try to do that.

Suggest places for a perfect night out.

The perfect place go for a night out in Dubai is The Walk at JBR.. It was extremely relaxing and the perfect spot to hang out and chill with friends with the gorgeous view of Palm & Atlantis. Another must visit spots in Dubai for chilling at night is Barasti which is a restaurant plus bar plus club near JBR. The view of all the boats & yatchs was great and the djs play some exceptional music with live performances as well.

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on?

Dubai is too many things to offer. I went to Atlantis this time for the Dolphin interaction and it was a lifetime experience.

Ferrari World, Desert Safari, At the top of Burj Khalifa, Marina Boat Tour are some of the must do things when you are in Dubai. Ice Skating is also one of my favourite things to do when I'm in Dubai. Dubai is famous for it's vibrant nightlife.

Perfect spot for a girls night out.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there?

When it comes to food the best thing about Dubai is that the food is Halal. There are amazing restaurants in Dubai offering not only good food but also stunning decor and breathtaking views. Some of my favourite restaurants are Cheesecake Factory, PierChic, Majlis Al Bahar, Al Mahara.
