This Independence Day, we would like to salute a few special women who are firmly committed to ethical and sustainable fashion. With dreams of a better Pakistan, commitment to female empowerment and love for our indigenous skills and techniques, these women serve as an inspiration to us all.

Here they share their stories.

Na us ha ba Br oh i ina aya "During the flood relief efforts in rural Sindh, while distributing rations, the women and I exchanged stories. Their burdens were so much weightier than mine. I was there supposedly to assist them; instead, it seemed like they were helping me learn a lesson in perseverance. The women and I, our dreams interweaved. I knew then, that I had to try harder to dream bigger. I took the risk. I put my career and financial security on the line for the idea, resigned from a comfortable job, spent whatever little savings I had and every moment I could wrest away from childcare into an uncertain venture.

I had the idea of using women’s craft skills into creating luxury couture that promised high returns for myself as well as for the women.

I was able to execute this idea into successful innovation that the fashion industry applauded. Risk taking, innovation and successful execution are hallmarks of entrepreneurs. I was able to actualize this startup with minimum funds, as all I had were my personal savings. It’s been an intense obstacle race of trials, errors, experiments, crashing nerves and rising joy since. "

challenge of being an entrepreneur: It’s extremely challenging to be an entrepreneur, regardless of age or gender. advice: focus on the business and learn accounting!

S a b a G u l Popinjay Challenge of being an entrepreneur: I’d like to quote French-Cuban author Anais Nin’s here. She said: “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”. Running a startup is an exhausting exercise, no matter your gender and no matter what part of the world you live in. In some ways, I actually think it may be easier for women to decide to go the startup route, as they rarely have the same demands from their families that men have in terms of having a secure, stable, highly-paying job – all things that a startup does not provide. advice: to trust your gut and never second-guess yourself.

"The road to Popinjay’s creation as a luxury handbag company started when I was in graduate school at MIT. I heard the story of a young girl Azaada Khan, who disguised herself as a boy for 12 years in 1990s Taliban-ruled Afghanistan to be allowed to attend school. Azaada changed her name, cut her hair, the way she dressed, walked, talked and everything about her to take on this new identity. I could not stop thinking about Azaada’s story – it was so real and raw for me. Even though I had grown up in nextdoor Pakistan, my life had taken a radically different course from Azaada’s – while Azaada had to change her identity to get a middle school education, I was getting my second degree at MIT. That summer I travelled to various communities in Pakistan that were being helped by the same NGO that had helped Azaada get an education. I started a pilot to provide girls and women access to basic education and skills training. Eventually in 2011 I left my corporate job in the US to return to Pakistan and work on this full-time.

What is Popinjay today started as a pilot with 25 girls and women in 2011, and got rebranded into the accessories fashion brand Popinjay at the end of 2013.

Popinjay’s ethos combines luxe design with social impact. Our mission is to be a global brand that stands for justice and gender equality while creating inspired fashion pieces. We strive to produce the finest quality products and revive dying craft without compromising our high ethical standards.

S id r a Q a s im Markhor

Markhor was born in 2010, when my cofounder Waqas met a local shoemaker, Mohammad Hussain, at a village council meeting in our hometown, Okara, Pakistan. He ended up visiting Hussain’s unit a day later to discover five craftsmen stitching shoes from genuine leather using indigenous skills. Together, Waqas and I set out to help these craftsmen save their art of handcrafting shoes from going extinct. We then created an online platform to connect the craftsmen from their hometown with people all over the world who value their art. Markhor combines indigenous craftsmanship with minimal design for modern men and women. The brand was named after the national animal of Pakistan, Markhor. Since Okara is where the art is, Markhor best connects these artisans, paying them in advance and more than the market salaries. We want to expand this initiative in future with different organizations that are currently working in the health and education sector.

Challenge of being an entrepreneur: Though it is difficult being a female entreprenuer anywhere in the world, it gets worse when you are from a middle class Pakistani family. Family support is the first thing you start losing because they don’t want to see you dealing with uncertainty and taking risks in your career. On top of this, being an entrepreneur means dealing with huge amount of stress and let it not get in your way to solving the daily problems. advice: be more humble. it is easier to be smart but difficult to be kind.

As two trained graphic designers from NCA, we had often talked about putting our creative talents to some good use. With the boom of the fashion industry, and fashion designers sprouting from every corner, the only void that has been left was in the accessories field. This was a market only a few Pakistani's considered pursuing as compared to clothing. Zainab has close ties Chitral and many fond memories of her time spent there.

She feels strongly about the harsh terrain and extreme living conditions of her friendly and peace loving people. Aware of the conservative limitations for women and their hard lives, friends who she had played with since childhood, now all grown up, often gifted her hand embroidered tokens upon her departure. That is something that came naturally to them, the embroidery craft is their inheritance.

Inspired by the numerous NGO's working in remote areas across Pakistan, empowering locals from the area they worked in, this seemed like the most rewarding venture to pursue, and where else, in your own ancestral area.

Challenges of being an entrepreneur: It was easier being female and starting something working with people in Chitral, the women and Mogh limited, we were given respect and all the cooperation that was required. Whereas getting things done in Lahore, was more of an ego battle. We got a lot of slack for being female and knowing what we wanted. It was a lot of attitude before we found the most supportive and professional factory team that we work with for all our production. advice: work during the day and sleep in the night. don't be so relaxed about everything, then there would be no last minute stress.

J u g n u M o h s in & SEHER TAREEN studio s Seher Tareen of Studio S collaborated with journalist and activist Jugnu Mohsin to cultivate and harness the talent of the local women at Village Shergarh. Jugnu was struggling initially to find an outlet for the women at her village who needed the money and when she heard that Seher was looking to do fashion with a soul and a conscious, she pitched the idea to her. After visiting the women, seeing the work their capable of and the beautiful indigenous techniques they knew, Seher worked with them to design a collection for her label Studio S. As a fashion designer, she feels it her responsibility to create and push the boundaries, and to take full advantage of the wealth of techniques, embroidery styles and colours at her dispoal. This project is helping the women be more independent, whilst honing their talent and empowering them.

I had been dabbling with the idea of establishing an ethical fashion company that focuses on the social development and empowering women in the developing countries. After extensive research and travelling, I decided to give up my job and start Fashion ComPassion in 2011. The inspiration to form Fashion ComPassion is a combination of my two biggest interests: Fashion and philanthropy. From a young age, I have been involved in various organizations that help the marginalized and give back to society. While working at the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, I witnessed first-hand how creating jobs and providing a sustainable solution for the poorest in the world had a monumental impact on families and communities. I wanted to take this forward in the best way that I could and help create a sustainable solution against poverty for women.

Challenge of being an entrepreneur: I think being an entrepreneur is difficult and is a life changer and it’s not for everyone. Personally I have never felt things are harder for me because I am a female. advice: not to be too hard on myself and have more self belief.

hen I was asked to write an article for Papperazzi’s 14th August issue, I actually hesitated to say yes for a moment. I write a blog about babies and dessert, I knew what was expected of me- a cheerful, hopelessly optimistic post, where I would wax lyrical about the untouched beauty hidden within Pakistan’s borders, the highest mountains and the greenest valleys, and commend the people of Pakistan for their unparalled level of hospitality and generosity. And to be honest, until a few days ago perhaps I would have done just that and that too in earnest – believing in each an every word I wrote with every fiber of my being, but not today. Today, I do not “bleed green”. Today, I would be lying if I claimed to be a “proud” Pakistani.
