INTRODUCING ALINA RAJ

MAke up forever

A

lina Raj has worked with renowned artists like Mohsin Khawar, Laila Ali Khan, Aqsa Ali and Libah Chaudhary to make her mark and establish herself as a go-to makeup artist, be it for fashion photography or bridal shoots. At a young age of 20, after training under several renowned makeup artists she earnestly yearned to polish her skills till she could make it to the covers of magazines like 20

GT and shoots for brands like Cross Stitch and Damas. Alina has started off as an enterprising and successful makeup artist with appointments from bridals to shoots coming from all around the town. We asked her what it's like to work with some of the industry's biggest names along with doing bridal shoots and this is what she had to say.

Which elements of your job do you most enjoy? Bridals or Shoots? Honestly, the two cannot be compared. I'm fairly new to the fashion industry so there was the perception of this being a place where one has to stay guarded. However, be it Mohsin, Laila or Aqsa, we all worked in the most cohesive and conducive environment. The thrill of working under pressure while producing quality work gave me the kind of satisfaction that I had never experienced before. Obviously, it became all the more worthwhile after the work was appreciated by clients and consumers alike, Alhamdullilah. Bridals on the other hand, is the other side of the coin. There isn't a better synonym or word for a girl whose about to get married: She's the 'bride'. And she's the most special person in the world that day and to make her day and her look at par or better than how she imagined herself to be, just leaves me with inexplicable joy. Do you like creating really out-there looks, or do you prefer something classically beautiful? Classy is timeless and we are a society at large who are not too receptive to change especially if it comes to bridals. So as far as bridals are concerned, it's of utmost importance to me to understand what the bride wants. I always arrange an appointment prior to the big day to discuss all the intricate details with the to-be bride so we both are at ease. However, with shoots at times, one can't help but spontaneously work towards developing a happy accident. To come up with something out of the box that was there in the subconscious and turns out to be a classic. That doesn't mean that sometimes, the look just doesn't add up and quick changes need to be made to be an instant fixer. But that's the beauty of my job. One gets to experiment and where each face is unique, each experience brings something different to the table as well as my palette. Does everyone look better with makeup? If I can be candid and blatant, no. It's amazing how so many in this world are blessed with flawless beauty. How I envy them! Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them which got me around experimenting with all the makeup products from a very young age and landed me with the career of my dreams. What is in your personal makeup bag? Currently, I'm using YSL Youth Liberator Serum Foundation, a Mac cream eye liner, Dior Blush Rose Darling and Clinique Matte Plum Lipstick. Any suggestions for those reading this column? Stay hydrated, try Josie Maran Argan Oil as a moisturiser and see if it works for you. For those with ageing skin do try Peter Thomas Roth products, I've seen them give visible results. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Calypso Coral is one of my go to products during the summer. It gives a peachy pink flush to the cheeks and keeps your lips moisturized while adding a lovely tint. planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? Vienna! It made it to my list when I grew a strange fascination with Billy Joel’s “Vienna” almost a decade ago. Knowing that this so called city of dreams is the hub for opera, classical music and a handful of legendry musicians, the Viennese culture always seemed exciting in compound ways. The plan actually happened when a fellow Austrian student extended me an invitation to visit her hometown during summer. Who did you travel with? I travelled with a friend. The Viennese friend Olivia was already awaiting our arrival! Where did you stay? We stayed with Olivia’s parents in the 19th district. They had a beautiful house where every inch was covered with the memo-

ries of Olivia and her sister growing up. The backyard had a breakfast area with the view of their homegrown berries, apricot trees and a giant Christmas tree. Her parents hosted us with an overwhelming and the most hospitable behavior I have ever experienced in my life so far. What are the best shopping spots there? Mariahilfer strasse between the 6th and 7th district holds the old city’s flavor apart from sporting side street shops. While you’re here, you must go to Neubaugasse as well; it’s a small street in the 7th district with fancy little cafes and local designer shops, especially burgesses. For high end designer brands Kärntner strasse is your place. It is a centuries old pedestrian street that also encompasses small cafes, historic sculptures and the famous St Stephens Cathedral. So apart from the amazing shopping, there is also a lot to experience.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? I’m quite big on breakfasts while travelling and Olivia took us to café Ullrich and Erich. They are related and almost next to each other as they say that Erich is Ullrich’s “little brother”. You get to sit outdoors primarily surrounded by a hipster district which is also somewhat Vienna’s prodigy. Other local cuisine recommend are Palmenhause, Plachutta for its wiener schnitzel and ef16 with a beautiful courtyard for a lush summer day lunch.

travel diaries

Finally, any tips? Vienna produces a lot of sweet stuff so few things I would definitely recommend include, apfel strudel, apricot dumplings, mozartkugeln which are like bonbons made with pistachio marzipan, nougat and covered with dark chocolate. They can be a great souvenir/present. Keep a look out for buildings by Hundertwassen and if you have the time then visit the museums and galleries around Museum Quarter for works by Klimt and other renowned artists. And lastly listen to Billy Joel sing, “when will you realize Vienna waits for you?”.

Suggest places for a perfect night out If you’re big on dining with a view then I’d suggest going to the Sofitel hotel. Circus inspired 25 hours’ hotel is also equally exciting. You can start the evening at their rooftop bar/cafeteria called Der Dachboden and move onto 1500 food makers if you’re interested in some Italian. Housing a Michelin star, Steirereck offers local cuisine with beautiful terraces and a six course meal in

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? We spent an entire afternoon at the Alte donau. Also called the old Danube; a river strip we chose that’s little far from the centre of the city. Taking a dip in the clear water with swans and ducks around you and then laying in the boat was an ideal way to relax! Later we sat by one of the many restaurants at the river bank in the centre of Vienna and there it was, a perfect Sunday. While travelling, unwinding for me is by indulging in some fun activities so we decided to spend an entire day at the amusement park called Prater.

travel diaries

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on I found Vienna truly a magical city where you’re strolling between palaces that host live orchestra balls, fiaker horse carriages, monumental parks, blooming gardens, historical museums and architecture that had traces of art nouveau that it actually felt like a disney movie has come to life and obviously I’m the princess of this fairytale. A drive up the kahlenburg hill to see the aerial view of the city is also worth your while.

a monolithic glass cube interior. You can also look up Do & Co restaurant with an enjoyable rooftop with the cathedral’s view!

With the holiday season in full swing, you may feel too restless to focus on important things. Travel and opportunities to sample other diversions might be more appealing. And with the likelihood of enjoying a more active social life, your everyday tasks and chores could seem a tad tedious. However, you might be stirred to action by a conversation or idea that gets you back on track and encourages you to make good progress, too.

Although this is the season of generosity and goodwill, don't feel you have to lend money to friends or do them any big favors. While it's great to help out, there is such a thing as overdoing it, especially if you end up feeling resentful. Invest your time and money carefully this week and avoid giving it away to causes or people who might not appreciate it. Taking a workshop or short break would be money well spent.

If you've discussed a key project for a while, the New Moon is the time to take the first cautious steps to getting things off the ground. It might be a tentative beginning, but it could blossom into something to be proud of. If it's a home-based business, it could turn out to quite lucrative, too. Mercury's move into your partnership zone may help you discuss a situation diplomatically and find ways to agree that you can both live with.

Cautious confidence can encourage you to step closer to cementing a certain bond. However, the present setup suggests that you aren't likely to be overly demonstrative if things don't work out as planned. In any case, you may be better off enjoying lighthearted liaisons rather than anything too heavy. However, the New Moon in this same sector can be the perfect opportunity to take a business or romantic relationship to the next level. Business matters become more buoyant, too.

The Sagittarius New Moon could coincide with a chance to invest more time in a romance or creative plan. Either way, you'll feel optimistic about the outcome. The stirring energies of Mars aligning with the expansive energies of Jupiter could see you pushing ahead and being quite ambitious with your plans. There's much to be said for drilling into the details and making sure you cover all your bases. You can be even surer of success if you do.

Do you want to put real estate on the market or relocate to a new place? Tuesday's New Moon could coincide with an urge to take action after a long period of deliberation. It's likely you've already put a lot of thought into such ideas, so any move you make now will be more of a calculated risk than leap in the dark. You could get very excited about the potential for new activities that come with such a decision.

Upgrading your skills may be one way to attract new opportunities into your life. Tuesday's New Moon could be the best time to enhance your options by seeing what's out there. Want to learn creative writing, interior design, or online marketing? Any of this is possible if you're willing to embrace the work that comes with the decision. Romantic opportunities could show up at a special holiday event if you're solo and looking for love.

If your plan costs money to implement, then starting around Tuesday's New Moon could help matters flow in the right direction. Think about investing wisely and try to avoid splurging and you'll be likelier to get a good return. However, don't be tempted to give generously to a lost cause. While it's nice to help, there are some people who will take advantage. On the other hand, someone who's generous by nature might want to return the favor.

Tuesday's New Moon in your sign is the best of the year for you. It brings an opportunity to fulfill your dreams and desires. If you make a list of these and review it regularly, you may find they materialize a lot sooner. On another note, Mercury's move into your money zone could see you selling items and perhaps earning some extra money on the side. If you start with things you no longer need, you could pocket the proceeds while enjoying more space.

If you've ever wanted to learn to mediate or take up some other spiritual discipline, Tuesday's New Moon may be one of the better times to go ahead. However, it can be equally helpful for beginning the process of visualizing your desires on a daily basis, as the practice helps the law of attraction work more efficiently. Venus in your sign could coincide with a desire for a holiday makeover that boosts your confidence.

If you make a new friend this week, you may stay buddies for a long time into the future. This is because the New Moon can set the right emotional tone that proves supportive to both of you. However, Mercury's move into Capricorn can be a call to listen to your feelings, as they may be trying to tell you something. If you've had trouble making a decision, tuning in to your intuition could help you decide what to do.

Should you make a start on a goal or career plan? If you're thinking about it, Tuesday's New Moon may be the best of the year for you in this regard. You might find yourself in the right place at the right time to take a golden opportunity further. Your social life looks livelier, too, as Mercury encourages more mixing and holiday carousing. New connections could prove useful over the long term, so keep the contact details.
