in his shoes Team Paperazzi discovered Sameer Hassanali, a talented young guy who has a good eye for art and runs a successful family stone based jewellery business. We decided to follow him around for the day and came across some fantastic insight on gems and gemmology, fine jewellery, an amazing art collection and architecture to die for.

S

ameer grew up in Dubai but he moved to Pakistan as he feels the market for stone based jewellery is quite large and quite unexposed to the grandeur and artistic innovation fine jewellery has reached at the global level. He likes to educate his clients about what he's selling to them as well. It is not just the piece that one is buying, but the story, the feeling, the artistic and intrinsic value. Meanwhile he is also teaching an elective course at Indus Valley, a first of its kind, on Jewellery Design and Gemmology. Their store in Karachi is currently located on the ground floor of Ocean Mall. ALIEL also has a showroom in PC Hotel, Lahore.

liel is a global company, their headquarters are in Dubai and they established themselves in Pakistan about 20 years ago. ALIEL’s expertise stretches from the finest hand crafted gold jewellery to their emphasis on using the most precious of stones and natural materials. ALIEL sources their stones from all over their world, from there they are able to manufacture the finest of pieces using the most precious of materials in their factories out of Italy, Hong Kong, Bangkok, India, and Pakistan. The Polki jewellery is manufactured locally because they find that there are massive amounts of talent in Pakistan and they actually train their artisans by sending them off to various parts of the world under their own umbrella to learn new techniques. “Polki and gold jewellery is a dying art that can only be preserved by passion and love and by encouraging and implementing old techniques with modern technology, using only the finest, rarest, and most precious of natural materials. The team at ALIEL have been able to incorporate their local manufacturing through the implementation of the latest technology and techniques that are available in the industry today.

Impressed with all the insight we were being given on gems, gemmology and jewellery design and the assessment of the true value of a stone we were intrigued to know where Sameer gets all his knowledge and know how from. Here's what he shared with us:

"My favourite stone to work with is Ruby. I have a love affair with Rubies.

It's the stone I studied most as well."

"I got my education from the American school of Dubai and then I went to Indiana University Bloomington for my undergrad. I found my passion and did my GIA graduate gemology course in Florence, Italy. Then I studied the Italian language at l'università per i stranieri (university for foreigners) in Perugia, Umbria (Italy) from there I did my diamond training in Bombay for a few months at which point I decided to shift here. My training never ends, the beauty of this business, and industry, is the constant interaction with connoisseurs, artists, academians and the alike, that the learning never stops.�

"Some of these jewels are very close to me as they are family heirlooms.

When my mother got sick and passed my father realised that the one thing he could pass on from generation to generation is our jewellery. As it not only holds the memory of a generation, but the value" "I understand that the layman way of looking at a diamond (for example) is just the size and clarity and how it looks which is fair enough because when I go to buy a car all I care about is the engine and how it looks etc.

I don't know much about the combustion and technicalities therefore I'd go to an expert. Same way, that's what we're here for. There's a lot of things going on in the market at the moment. Some jewellers show customers diamonds telling them it's sealed and never been opened. Now why would I want to buy a sealed diamond same way I wouldn't want to buy a car without sitting inside and taking it for a test drive."

Sameer's favourite stone to work with is Ruby and he in fact claims he has always had a love affair with Rubies as it's the stone he studied most as well.

"These particular stones and jewels hold a certain kind of importance in my life only because I was very involved in the whole learning process of their manufacturing" "I don't collect jewellery pieces from auction houses and exhibitions be18

cause I'm not such a big fan of those but when it comes to stones and gems, yes I do. However, when it comes to Polki jewellery yes I am a big fan and I would love to collect those."

We were quite surprised to see an art piece of what seemed like male genitals covered in gems at the ALIEL store so quite hesitantly we asked Sameer if the art piece was exactly what we thought of it. He replied saying "It's a piece of art

course there has been a lot of involvement of Sameers father in the whole design process and they have also taken insight from architects and interior design companies from around the world.

On entering the house we felt like we've just been hit with major Art Fever. The house was unreal and had more of an art gallery/ museum vibe to it. A tour through Sameer's house was nothing but an inspiring breath of fresh air.

The whole concept of the house was kept minimal to the point that they didn't even have skirting on the wall as it “detracts from the original concept� The house was not the largest of houses and it did somewhat look like a gallery/ warehouse. According to Sameer, the whole point was to have ample wall space and natural

The house was created to be a creative think tank where, artists and artisans alike could come and spend time to work on various creative processes.

"I was in Hong Kong with my father and we saw these rough amethyst rocks and rock crystal pieces and I bought them and asked my friend Abdul Jabbar Gul to do something with it. So this was the result of that."

"This is one of my personal favourite paintings- the artist's name is Sabhan Adam. He's a schizophrenic living in a mental institution and the idea is that these are "his" personalities or the other explanation is that all people although one face put on many many different faces constantly through life. That’s the way I look at this particular piece" We were quite intrigued by one particular installation which was a young Thai artists work. What's interesting about these works are the techniques of bronze castes wires and and rods being brought together to bring what you see here. The work is still incomplete as the artist is afraid to travel to Pakistan and install the missing piece.

The missing pieces are bronzed ants that leave a trail and form the outline of a fetus with the mother overlooking.

"This piece, we bought at the NCA thesis show by this artist called Saba Qureshi who is originally from Karachi. She's extremely talented and had us very impressed. This painting is of a man running and has been put together in layers. It's a real piece of art!"

After a fulfilling tour we asked Sameer where this love for the art and jewellery culture really comes from and he told us: 20

" It definitely stems from deep inside for the desire want or need of beautiful things. As we like to joke it's not about the clothes you wear but the kind of underwear you wear what's more important (what other people see or what you know and what feels the best Etc). But, it’s not only about that, it’s about respecting nature and holding what is extremely rare at the highest value. Same thing with our clients, they are collectors and connoisseurs of the best things in the world and so we provide them only the finest and the rarest of natural materials in the most artistic way we can, fine jewellery. We live the same way we work. Our model and philosophy is to continue learning and educating ourselves on what makes the best the best choice contoured to what fits all of our (mine and my family) individual personalities. So that's where the fine Jewellery to fine art or fine architecture comes from the constant journey for the best. I think that's inherent in all of us.”
