Why did you decide to be a fashion designer?

My mother is my greatest inspiration. I have grown up in complete awe of her fashion sense and style. I've been lucky to have the full support of my family - they have given me a sense of security and pride which has encouraged me to fulfill my dreams and objectives.

What is your background and training?

I didn't attend any fashion school - designing is my passion.

From a very young age, I've always been doing creative things. It feels like fashion has always been a big part of my life.

What do you love best about being a fashion designer?

The best thing about working in fashion is being able to spend all day working in a field I really love. I just can't get enough! Though it's a great industry to be in, it's also an extremely tough field to work in. There's a lot of pressure and it's extremely competitive - one really has to be very serious and dedicated.

Tell us about your brand.

The brand’s signature style is smocking, which can be seen in most of my designs. Trendy, modern cuts are spiced up with unique embellishment to create modern outfits. ‘TEENA’ also provides a platform for fashion school graduates to experiment with new designs besides giving them an opportunity to jump deep into the world of fashion retail. The brand has participated in a lot of multibrand store exhibitions and all of them have turned out to be extremely successful.

How do you bring your inspiration into reality?

I've been in this industry for five years. I launched my brand with my personal savings and a small workshop located in my house. The response was great! Over the last few years I have expanded my brand by investing in it and hiring professional experts to help me run the business.

Do you keep up with trends or create them yourself?

I create my own trends and designs like my last two collections "Garden of Senhora" and "Grandeur Intri-cuts". Style

is a reflection of your attitude and your personality. My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive and to do so with passion, compassion and style.

What is your target market?

We target market trendy, modern, confident, classy, stylish and ambitious women.

Teena By Hina Butt is showcasing on the second day of BCW '15. Tell us a little about your collection.

I was inspired by the paintings and architecture of Victorian Palaces and their intricate work. The collection is based on stylish melange of savvy silhouette and prudish lengths with richly decorated necklines. Floaty and sheer gowns with accentuated waistlines are the mainstay of this collection. The mood is royal vintage romance which portrays the elegance and power of today's women.

Being an MPA, you are politically active. How do you manage both together?

Delegating work and team effort helps the business run smoothly! Politics is my career - I love working for the country, help people and making an effort to improve the country.

If you weren't a designer what else would you be?

A lawyer.

Lastly, Any advice you'd like to give to aspiring/ upcoming fashion designers?

Believe in yourself and work hard. That is the only key to success! The clothes we wear and the trends we follow are often associated with superficiality and materialism. Fashion is the soul of style, wear that suits you the best.

Is it hard to cope with competition in this fashion industry?

When I see other people doing well, I feel the urge of self grooming and improvement. The biggest challenges are price competition, brand presence and a highly saturated market. Everyone has to work hard to pave one's path.

What do you hope to have achieved in the industry 10 years from now?

In Pakistan the importance of fashion is being realized in view of its big potential for future expansion. The significance of building individual brands in Pakistan fashion industry cannot be over stressed. I love my work and I am hoping to take the Label 'TEENA by Hina Butt' to more outlets in Pakistan and beyond.

Our readers want to know a little about your personal life. Tell us what you love doing.

I love travelling, listening to music and spending time with my family. I love going to the spa and window shopping to see all the latest trends in fashion. I am currently enrolled in a Masters program in International Relations as I love to keep up to date on foreign politics and world affairs.

What do you do in your free time?

Due to my hectic schedule, I'm usually always at work. I am also a member of the Punjab Assembly so get very little free time. Whenever I do have time on my hands, I like to spend it all with my family.

Urdu 1 has partnered with FPW for the first time ever, how did that happen?

We introduced International (Turkish) Fashion to Pakistan in the form of "Ishq e Mamnu", and now we feel its time to take Pakistani fashion to international horizons.

Tell us about your involvement at FPW? I was involved in everything from the production to the celebrity showstoppers to our hosts to everything which had a connection to the channel in one way or the other.

Did the fashion week come upto your expectations?

It did come upto our expectations but then sky is the limit, there is so much more we can do and we shall do.

Did you feel anything was lacking?

I think we did manage to get everything covered albeit with some hiccups (as this was our first time) but the future prospects excite us; there is still so much that can be made to happen.

Being such a popular drama channel, tell us a little more about Urdu 1.

More than a channel it’s a dug out or you may call it a team pavilion, where the captain leads but the success goes to the team! In addition to dramas, we have the exclusive international rights to MasterChef Pakistan and The Voice.

What makes Urdu 1 different from the rest?

Versatility. Turkish, Indian and now Pakistani content is radiated in a single prime bandwidth. What sets us apart is the fact that we celebrate diversity within our perimeter without leaning onto an offshoot channel.

Do you feel the pressure of coming up with something extraordinary with so many competing channels around?

Innovation is the name of the game and competition is its spirit. We definitely plan to present the various colours of Pakistani media in the most interesting manner possible. FPW is a case in point, and yes, we are coming up with something extraordinary very soon.

What do you expect people to look for with Urdu 1?

Pure entertainment.

Who is your target audience?

For us everyone is our target audience. We create for people of all ages and all walks of life. We want men and women both to get entertained by us.

Do you think men watch these Drama's as much as women do?

Actually yes, you'll be surprised! That’s why you see so many pretty ladies adorning the screen these days.

Is it true that there is a peak time of viewing drama's?

In our mostly urban households there is a convenient time to watch dramas, like around dinner time when everyone is home and the family sits together. Nevertheless, I remember people waking up at around sehri time to watch Pakistan hockey matches during Olympics. The content quality matters more than its temporal placement. Ishq e Mamnu and Farieha that came on Urdu 1 had the same effect, whenever we placed it, we would still get the audience.

Was it risky to bring Turkish Soaps to Pakistan?

Of course it was but then so was Wright brothers’ first flight!

Being the very first channel to bring in Turkish drama's dubbed in Urdu, which clearly has taken your viewers by storm, must have been a great feeling?

Oh yes it was- even better than having chocolate!

Any other foreign dubbed serials you're bringing in the near future?

Yes we are, and it's bigger than what we have shown you before on our screens.

Tell us a little about your role at Urdu 1?

I am the Programming head at urdu 1 (GM URDU 1) and it's my responsibility to take care of the content from production till the post which is aired from my channel.

Our readers would love to know about your interests in fashion.

Ofcourse my interest in fashion helped me to deal with the local fashion world which resulted in the form of a successful FPW event but on the other hand, since I am neither a model nor a designer, I still like to wear nice clothes which are appropriate to the occasion.

Who do you think showcased the best collections?

They were all amazing- creativity at its best! But no one

What are your favourite drama serials?

Ishq e Mamnu, Dastaan, Jackson Heights and Humsafar.

I was the project head/executive producer for Humsafar before I joined Urdu 1.

We saw so many celebrity showstoppers on the ramp this time, how did you manage this?

I am so humbled by the way they responded to me. My relationship with them is so special and I treasure it the most. We don’t have a producer-actor relationship, we are a bunch of friends.
