ammara jabbar The sink and the pink cabinet are hard to miss as one enters the apartment. Choosing an interesting approach, Ammara completely transformed these already built-in features.The sink was converted in to a drum with body building tips inscribed on it.

Using the idea of ‘nazakat’, she placed various items in the feminine pink cabinet to masculinize it.

Moving on to the kitchen, she placed a carpet in it to conform it to a domestic space.

fatima nadeem Fascinated by the constant changing of the residents of the apartment and the various different families that have lived in it, Fatima photographed different parts of the apartment and then painted ghost like scenes and figures on them to underline the ever-changing nature of the tenancy of the place. She is surely an artist to watch out for!

noreen barkat ali Taking inspiration from the apartment and her own grandmother, Noreen’s piece blurs the lines between painting and sculpture. Using elements, such as a cart she found, slippers typically worn

by Bohri’s found in the apartment left behind by previous tenants and a random chair, Noreen brings her piece tolife by adding a circuit. Her piece with its bold and vibrant colours leaves one completely intrigued.

As soon as you enter the apartment you are greeted with Faiza’s vibrant painting.

The focal point of the piece, the fish that are completely in sync with each other bring forth the idea of movement and harmony.

Using plastic to create moulds of clothes that are carefully placed yet meant to look just strewn across the apartment, Hira’s installation is truly thought-provoking. She perceives the clothesline as a sneak peak in to the lives of the residents. The clothes allow one to know who lives in the space therefore exploring the dichotomy between public and private by displaying a flashy bra in the balcony of the place that is visible to other residents in the area.

sara mir One of our favourite installations at the exhibit was Sara Mir’s wall of surreal family portraits. Recounting her grandmother’s belief that making portraits and taking pictures is haram, she deviates from this belief and creates this wall, using her own personal photographs, that she would like to have in her own house. The wall of bizarre portraits oddly gave life to the abandoned apartment and a sense of homeliness.

rabia ahmed Rabia's work is reflective of the fantastical escapist narrative she felt upon entering this space for the first time. While the narrative she wrote is also on display, she has purposely written it in a font so small and illegible because she wants people to discover the story on their own and how they interpret the painting.

Veera’s pieces were extremely interactive as one could literally pick them up. Scattered all around the apartment in obscure nooks, her pieces lay unframed. Inspired by postcards and photographs that had been archived by her grandparents of various families related to her, her work reflects the familial aspect of the space by placing these paintings all around and giving the apartment a sacred feeling of home. By sticking to the scale of actual photographs and postcards she gives her work an intimate feeling. She was extremely successful in developing an individual style.

maliha saleem When someone moves into a new place the first thing they think about is the vital need for privacy. This thought process is what led Maliha to turn unassuming canvas in to curtains to hang on the windows to create the privacy everyone desires and to give the feeling of settling in. However, what is contrasting and intriguing is the colour palette used.

Inspired by sunlight she uses hues of oranges and yellows.

Shahana's piece exudes a sense of calmness and serenity. Taking her sensory experience of the environment, the smell of petrol, the noise of the ever present traffic on the busy streets in Saddar and comparing it to her own atmosphere of a quieter residential area, she attempts to bring a piece of her idea of residence to the space.

Plainpalais Market, Geneva This market is my favourite place to wander. It is on 3-4 times a week and has things from all over the world. Vintage mink coats, handmade semi-precious jewellery, bone china, antique pieces, organic fruits/veggies and all the cheese under the sun. I once saw a beautiful huge mirror with a carved copper frame which I regret not buying.

"Ever since I moved to Geneva my style has become extremely casual chic. I practically live in my Adidas superstar trainers and a bomber jacket! I usually pair it up with my all time favourite perfume , Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf and a lip colour to match my mood. My current favourite is Velvet Teddy by Mac. My challenge here has been to layer up in the cold weather without looking like a polar bear. I've now resorted to a warm oversized coat, a thick big scarf and a Russian fur hat to keep me both warm and stylish.

BorĂŠal, Geneva This quaint place shop is a descendant patisserie with a large variety of coffee blends. It has a casual hipster vibe and is ten minutes from where I live. Green tea macha is a must try there, cold or hot!

Luigia This Italian restaurant is by far every Genevoise's favourite place. It has an industrial feel with lots of Edison bulbs lighting up the place. My current obsession is with the Le Sierra pizza which has no tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, goat cheese, pears and rocket salad with honey drizzled on top.

a full workload of body functions that you cannot live without. They come in different forms as well — just like cholesterol. On one end, there’s the good, unsaturated Fat. On the other, there’s the bad, saturated Fat. First, the good news: we all need a certain amount of body fat to cushion, position and protect our internal organs. That means protecting our bones from injury and underlining our skin for insulation. These are just a couple of all the boring benefits that we don’t bother worrying about. But, ladies, the enlighteningly shocking news is that if you don’t have fat in your system, you will lose the subcutaneous layer under your skin whose absence is the cause of wrinkles, fine lines and aging spots. So go ahead and grab that hummus with all the might of your unconstrained pleasure (but, ahem-ahem, portion-control, please).

The question now is how to differentiate between good and bad fats. It’s actually quite simple. The good fat, that’s unsaturated fat, doesn’t solidify at room temperature. So olive oil, sunflower oil, flex seed oil, avocado oil, nuts, omega 3 and omega 6 all fall into this category. As for bad fat, or saturated fat, you’ll find that it solidifies at room temperature. You know what I’m talking about: cream, cheese, animal fats, processed meats and baking chocolate are just some of the sins you should keep your body away from.

fat & fabulous Last week, I had a very interesting encounter with a beautiful, 51 year old baby turkey. I call them ‘baby turkeys’ because they are new, fresh and juicy for the grill.

Piece of advice: If you’re going mad over the difference between good fat vs. bad fat, just go nuts: that’s peanuts, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, to name a few. After explaining my Fat Facts, Ayesha understood how fat is unfairly treated as the underdog among all macronutrients. And that, too, without a fair trial.

If you are following the same diet plan and fitness regime for years without a core understanding of your goals, I know that it can be Ayesha (not her real name, obviously) walked in wearing a crisp really frustrating. After all, what should your ‘next steps’ be? How do you navigate the twists and turns in your long term nutritional white, tucked-in shirt and a beautiful Hermes Scarf. From the looks of it, I couldn’t quite tell why or from where she wanted to planning? Fortunately, Ayesha got it. She understood that her body needed to be fuelled by the appropriate amounts of good fats, lose weight. It took us fifteen minutes to get comfortable before proteins and carbs to increase metabolic activity so that she could she finally confessed: “Mantahaa,” she sighed, “I don’t think reduce her body-fat percentage. Let me rephrase that more simply: even you can help me. I have been to tons of nutritionists in Dubai and Canada and no one is able to help me lose the last Ayesha understood that she needed the good fat to burn the bad fat away. of these six stubborn kilos!”.

By looking at her, I don’t think any one could have guessed that she wanted to shed more pounds. But then it occurred to me.

She wanted to lose the extra six kilos to gain back her sense of accomplishment. So after a series of blood work analyses and 24/7 monitoring of her meals, I had the aha! moment - a sort of nutrient-rich epiphany. Her meals lacked a very important macronutrient: her meals lacked fat.

Just like the C-word (carbs, that is), the F-word (fat), is thrashed in all the fad diets where one important macronutrient or other is criminally ignored. Fat, like proteins or carbohydrates, perform 54

Today, Ayesha is well on her way! Not only has she lost 4 kg out of her 6 kg goal, but claims that her anti-aging cosmetics and creams are finally beginning to work. Best of all, she looks 10 years younger and is all set to start a new chapter in her life.
