more power to women

T

he women of Pakistan are a force to be reckoned. A force that shall unleash slowly but surely will have a very positive effect on the economy of our country. The only way to get this reckoning is to become a part of the white economy of Pakistan.

This is only possible if women generate revenue and are registered taxpayers. Their income could be from a small home-based enterprise or a big corporate. The key is for the women to have confidence in their creativity and capabilities.

To give a decent living, education and healthcare to our families in this day and age we need two incomes coming into any family unit irrespective of financial status. Women shall have to go beyond their conventional nurturing duties to contribute financially not just to their family units but to the economy in general. Women in our culture have two options; primarily they can go for a job, which would mean a 9-5 commitment and this would effect their family due to their absence from home. Secondly, they can start an enterprise or a business which is not 9-5pm and can have flexible hours.

In our culture and tradition, I have found the second option more feasible but women lack the knowledge, the confidence and the capital to venture into entrepreneurship.

Are you a women entrepreneur? Do you want to take your business to the next level? If the answer to one or both of these questions is yes then we have

good news for you. Women X is an entrepreneurship program meant to unleash the exponential power of women in business by offering a highly subsidized and comprehensive 4-month certificate course. Women X is a “World Bank Project” for women entrepreneurs being implemented by Enclude with the Government College University as their business education partner, in partnership with the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Women X was created to support women entrepreneurs from small and growing enterprises. It is designed to train and educate women to boost their business productivity and sales, to enter new local, regional and international markets. To be able to access new supply chains and identify new profitable opportunities.

To design and develop effective marketing strategies, action plans and business models to grow and develop their businesses. The Project X is to be rolled out in Lahore in February 2016. The last date for registration is 25th January. For the convenience of the women entrepreneurs this program shall be on Saturdays only.

The venue is Government College University. It is a 4-month certificate course with 16 sessions. Amazing opportunity for women entrepreneurs from Lahore and it’s suburbs. The main components of the program are Business Education, Soft Skills, Business Growth Action Plan and Networking. For more information and registration, please email wrc@lcci.org.pk. Q: I am getting very bored and have been neglecting my kids because of it. I just immerse myself in TV shows and movies and read occasionally. I don't want to see my friends either as they will be able to detect my unhappiness. What should I do?

A: It's probably that time of the year when the weather is a bit gloomy and you may be feeling a bit down. Most people around the world immerse themselves in TV shows. Apparently the new trend is to go out less and stay home more. We tend to judge ourselves too much about every action we take. However, too much of anything is not good and withdrawing yourself from your children and friends is not a good sign. You may be suffering from mild depression so it wouldn't be bad idea to seek professional help. Try to find out what is making you unhappy, surround yourself with good positive friends who will make you feel better even if they detect you being unhappy. Identifying the cause is the first step to feeling better. Also spending time with children can be quite healing.

Perhaps doing something constructive like a new hobby or learning a language can help. On a final note, we must learn to make ourselves happy. It's not wise to think you will derive it from somewhere else. Good luck and we hope you feel better fast!

Q: I feel like my best friend is talking about me. A few times I have found small bits of information that I have only disclosed to my best friend coming out of someone else's mouth. We've known each other forever and don't want to end things but I'm not sure how I should deal with this? I also feel she is toxic and says and does things to hurt me. Should I say goodbye?

A: Friends can be very tricky esp ones that you've known for a long period of time as you get clouded by the time you've spent together and aren't always able to judge their intentions or motivations. You end up sticking to old friends because you just get used to them like a bad habit. Sometimes you need to assess how good a friend they are to you. This is not easy to gage, but loyalty and telling the truth is an essential part in any relationship. If you feel your friend is lying to you or talking about you behind your back this means he or she is not a good friend.

However we should give relationships the benefit of the doubt and not jump to quick conclusions. Maybe there was some reason for them acting out. It would be best to confront your friend and see their reaction if they deny it and you have proof that's not ok. If they apologise that's ok let it go if it's a first.

Everyone makes mistakes. Also this is possibly something new you've learnt about your friend which will help you better.

Ahsan Memon's work will leave you dumbfounded. His riveting installations recreate every day objects in fiberglass, wood and canvas leaving the viewer completely bewildered as to whether they are looking at the real object or an artificial rendition of it. The installations included wooden planks (oil on canvas), a wall suspended with several tandoori naan (fiberglass), a brick wall (fiberglass), a mound of coal (fiberglass) and a rusting sheet of metal (oil on canvas). His realitydefying work is definitely the talk of town.

ali saad Ali’s morbid yet stunning compositions had a surprising sense of beauty to them. He uses the metaphor of chickens depict human suffering, shedding light on how humans, like chickens are brought up in various forms of social confinements and then go through a lifetime of grief in one form or another. He then extends this metaphor to inanimate objects also. He must be applauded for his level of detailing.

faraz aamer khan Definitely one of our favourite artists, Faraz Aamer's massive canvases depicting seascape all rendered in charcoal had us all swooning. The all-black canvases with varying shades and hues of dark had an intense sense of serenity to them, leaving us all in complete awe. His work also depicts the struggle and turmoil he feels within himself. He has a bright future ahead of him.

mohsin shaikh

The painting to the left was definitely the most sought after piece of the show. Mohsin’s work commanded one's attention immediately and invited the viewer to lean in and analyze the painting from up close.

Recreating classroom chalk boards, Mohsin employed hyperrealism in oil on canvas medium to depict that what we perceive as reality may not be reality at all on closer inspection. His theme - nothing is the truth has us rethinking what we had believed to be true.

ifra mahmood Ifra’s work reflects her ancestors migration from Kashmir. Her display of 11 works employs hyperrealism to re-create old family photographs and letters creating some stunning pieces in sepia tones. Once again let us remind you that those are not real photographs!

Sarah is a special-needs student with a hearing disability. Her magnificent miniature work deals with the importance of facial expressions and sound vibrations that she uses to decipher the language when someone is speaking to her. Her work reflects on how it is difficult for her to distinguish between the male and female voices and almost impossible to distinguish between two people of the same gender based on their voice.

zarish naveed Being diabetic Zarish depicts her perpetual craving for all things sweet. Using gouache on Wasli, Zarish paints her love for chocolate and how much she would love to be able to gorge on it - a luxury to her that the rest of us take for granted.

Marjan's thesis work depicts the beauty of social relations and their complexities by painting the details of carpets.

She highlights how the weaving of the threads in a carpet eventually builds together beautiful patterns and is analogous to societies formation and our experience through our personal interactions.

Each thread is important to the other. She also comments on how being Irani carpets is the one thing that reminds her of home.

nerda waqar

Nerda lost her mother at a very young age. She has blown up old images of her faither and painted herself in those pictures, in an attempt to create memories she never shared with her mother. Conceptually strong, Nerda’s work beautifully depicts her desire to have a life with her mother. Nerda must be commended for having the strength to work on such a personal issue.

noor maha Noor’s uses the gouache on Wasli medium to paint blank and expressionless faces of people that she has come across at NCA. She highlights how each person has personal baggage and despite being expressionless has a certain complexity to them. We like this concept of perception vs. reality!

jahanzaib akmal Jahanzaib plays nostalgically with his childhood obsession of video games, fusing it with Mughal miniature to create some very interesting gouache on Wasli pieces. We found his combination of 8-bit video games Mario Bros and Dave - with Mughal miniature extremely interesting.

Anum Liaqat's installation was extremely breathtaking. At first glance her installation looks like a large twodimensional painting.

However, on closer inspection one realizes that in fact she has painted 3-D objects to give the illusion of a flat painting. We loved it!

mir dostak Mir's work is about absence and loss that comes with losing a loved one and the effects it has on a person. He has cleverly portrayed it by using x-ray imagery to highlight the internal injuries and conditions one feels. We were sad to learn that he lost a brother in a target killing incident.

Shedding light on the patriarchal lens that the society views a woman with, Hoor's miniature works depict the many constraints a woman faces in our society. Her work highlights how the beauty of a woman is objectified and she serves a confining role in society.
