Please introduce yourself I am Saad Sarfraz Ahmad.I am an architect and the Director at Progressive Consultants (Pvt) Ltd. What inspired you to become an architect?

My father started the company Progressive Consultants 50 years ago and since childhood we were surrounded by engineering and architectural discussions at home. I was not inclined towards becoming an Architect though I had a creative imagination and used to build things as a child. It was much later in my sophomore year in college when I had joined as a journalism major that I realized that Architecture was my true calling.

What Are the Biggest Challenges and Attractions of This Job? I would like not to identify this profession as a job but as a passion and a lifestyle. It makes me look at the world differently and appreciate it at the same time. There is so much to learn when faced with challenges of different design projects.

Attractions on the other hand are many as each design element is a unique creation and addresses a particular topic that is translated through the final product. This is where Art and Architecture cross paths. It’s like composing music.

Do You Have a Signature Style?

I would not put a label or signature style to the final product but rather say that there is a consistency in the design process and methodology which I follow. It is a design process called DESIGN INTELLIGENCE which was taught to me during my Post Graduate studies at Southern California Institute of Architects also known as SCIARC while undertaking the Metropolitan Research and Design Curriculum.

What Project Management Services Do You Provide?

Progressive Consultants is in its 50th year and provides all design related services of Architecture, Engineering and master planning and project management in house. Our projects vary from tall buildings such as Arfa Software Technology Park to hospitals such as Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer hospital and research centre to housing schemes such as DHA Phase 5 & 6 to restaurants like Urban Kitchen and Courtyard by PF Chang’s to retail shops such as ZAHA, PaperClip, Ink factory to military buildings, aircraft hangers, government and public buildings such as Convention Center, educational institutes such as LUMS and factories such as Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle and Packages, resorts, hospitality buildings, Private residential homes to farm houses, etc.

Tell us about one of your previous projects. What did you do to make it a success?

Success is when the client’s requirements are met and a bit more than their expectation. Take for example the restaurant Urban Kitchen. It started off as a very functional project in terms of space but then it’s true character surfaced where the design evolved and a project with its true identity came to being. In a residential project success is when you create design moments

and the inhabitant experiences the quality of space, light and views. Being sensitive to nature and promoting sustainable architecture to me personally is the true essence of a successful home.

How do you balance function with aesthetic appeal?

Balance is different with the type of project and its end user. True that all projects have to be functional but the amount of aesthetics varies. In a hospital, industrial and educational institution project function is given priority. Whereas in a restaurant, retail, residential and hospitality project aesthetics is given more preference.

Which architect most influences your work or your work habits?

All of my professors such as Thom Mayne, Eric Owen Moss, Greg Lynn, Hernan Alanso Diaz, Peter Zellner, Zaha Hadid, Michael Speaks, Benjamin H. Bratton, Marcelo Spina at SCIARC, Woodbury University and University Of Maryland have had their influence in one way or the other and so did my classmates with whom I shared endless nights at the design studios.

Having practiced Architecture in Los Angeles for a number of years and with various firms I did learn about the work ethics of that part of the world and then kept learning from the gurus of the industry in Pakistan.
