IN THE WORLD OF HILAL SILK

Pioneers in their own right, Hilal Silk has made its name in the Pakistani marketplace for providing its customers with the finest quality of silk. The brand has been operational for decades and currently Talha Batla, the fourth generation in the business, is running the show. Batla has since helped the brand evolve and grow, and in the process of it all, has set up his own line under the name “Talha Batla”, which really brings out the true talent of the maestro.

» Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Talha Batla, I am 29 years old, and I am a fashion designer by profession but going by my education, I was supposed to be a corporate lawyer as I did my ACCA and then LLB but destiny made me who I am today and I have no regrets.

» How did you decide to join your family business after doing your ACCA and LLB? Was it something you were ever expecting to get into?

Well my transition into the field of fashion was quite a story. I had just completed my ACCA and my LLB, and was about to start when my grandfather asked me to get a computerized accounting system made for the company (Hilal Silk). In order to develop and implement an accounting system, it was essential to gain an understanding of the core business. I still remember visiting khaddis in Orangi and having discussions with salesmen to understand the system in depth and the associated gaps. So while I was still doing my LLB, I decided to work side by side in the family business. Little did I know that after my Law degree I would stick with the family business. » Do you feel it was easy for you to change fields and apply all the things you had learnt earlier, in to this business?

To me education never goes to waste. Every milestone in life is actually a stepping-stone for the next big goal in life. Every day you learn something new and its up to you how you apply those things in your daily life. My accounts background really helped me to setup a complete new factory for my bridals, taking care of the budgeting and costing at every step. » What were your initial opinions of working in the business, and how have those opinions

» Can you comment on the Pakistani market? Is it an easy one to cater to?

The Pakistani market is kind of tricky. On one hand you have people who are price sensitive and on the other, you have these hardcore crazy fabric lovers who want the best for every occasion. It’s more difficult to cater to the former, as you need to make sure that your prices are controlled without compromising on the quality. » You have also started your own line under the name of “Talha Batla”. What pushed you to create your own label aside from Hilal Silk?

At Hilal we cater to different people from different cultures with different backgrounds, hence we keep a vast majority of items. Some of them I love, some of them I like and others are just bread and butter. At ‘Talha Batla’ I don’t need to worry about catering to the masses. Talha Batla represents the true me without any boundaries and restrictions. I feel I can just put down all my feelings into my clothes without worrying about anyone’s opinion. » What is fashion to you?

Fashion to me is all about who you are and what you want the world to see you as. » How do you describe your personal style?

My personal style is very simple. Unless I am going to an event or a party, I would like to dress up in jeans and t-shirt or a simple button down shirt.

When you join an existing system or corporation, especially with a certain educational background you do feel there are many things which need to be changed or upgraded. For instance, in Accounting and Marketing. You feel things can be better if they are according to what you want. But over the course of time, you realize not everything is wrong. There are certain things done a certain way because it was meant to be that way and that was the best possible practice in the given situation. So you do end up changing some things but you also learn to adapt to some others. » Hilal Silk is a household name, what would you say is your trademark? What sets you guys apart from competition?

Hilal Silk has been there for almost 7 decades now Alhamdulillah. I guess the thing that really stood us apart is the quality, which we have never compromised upon. Our competitors just went with the flow and in order to maximize their gains, they compromised on their quality. » What is the clientele Hilal Silk caters to?

Hilal Silk caters to everyone who doesn’t want to compromise on quality.

We cater to everyone who understands and appreciates pure fabric. I would like to say Hilal Silk is for people who can differentiate the best from the rest. » In your opinion, what skills are necessary to build a successful fashion house? How has Hilal Silk continually maintained its standards?

Any fashion house is not built in a day. It requires dedication and hard work, day after day, generations after generations to gain public trust. It’s the core value of the brand which should remain intact in order for it to grow from a small next-door shop to a huge fashion house like Hilal Silk.

» How do you stay up to date regarding fashion?

When you yourself are a part of the industry, it doesn’t require much of an effort to stay upto date regarding the upcoming trends. You feel glad when you do something and it starts trending. Plus social media these days is as strong as it ever has been! » What would you say are the upcoming wedding fashion trends?

In our part of the world, people don’t like experimenting much with their bridals. Some of them have imagined a bridal dress 10 years back and would like to stick to it ignoring everything that has been happening in bridal fashion. 90% of the time people ignore cuts that are in style, and instead go for a simple shirt or an Anarkali.

Peplum trended for a while but it died down soon. More than cuts, colors take center stage of different wedding fashion trends. Pastels started a couple of years back and are still pretty in. I would like to see more bold colors (other than red ofcourse) to be used in bridals in the upcoming years. » Do you have any advice for an upcoming fashion designer?

My list of advices for new fashion designers is endless.

For them, there is so much to know and so much to learn that I have actually started making small videos on my Instragram handle for upcoming designers as well as clients. One basic thing that I want fresh designer graduates to understand is that their education is just 10% of the real world. Start working with the mindset that the next 2 – 3 years is just about learning more and more every day. As Socrates said: “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”

KETO BROWNIES Ingredients: ½ cup almond flour ½ tsp baking powder 1/3 cup stevia sugar or any Keto friendly sugar ¼ cup cocoa powder 2 oz dark chocolate 12 tbsp butter 3 eggs, at room temperature Chocolate sauce: 1 oz dark chocolate 1 tbsp butter

KETO BROWNIES READY!

Step. 1 In a medium bowl, combine almond flour, baking powder, stevia sugar and cocoa powder together and set aside

Step. 4 Add the melted chocolate/butter mixture to the eggs and combine.

(Make sure the chocolate mixture isn’t too hot or else it’ll cook the eggs!)

Step. 7 spread the brownie mixture evenly and tap the tray 3 times onto the counter to get rid of any air bubbles.

This helps the brownie rise smooth.

Step. 2 use a double boiler and melt the butter and dark chocolate over low heat until completely melted, once done set aside.

Step. 5 Then add the sifted dry ingredients into the wet mixture and whisk until completely incorporated.

Step. 8 melt the dark chocolate and butter in a microwave oven and drizzle over the brownie.

Step. 6 . Line your 8X8 baking sheet with parchment paper then pour in the chocolate brownie batter

Keto Brownies ready!

Step. 3 Whisk eggs in a separate bowl using a handheld mixer until thick and fluffy

PASSION FRUIT PANNA COTTA

PASSION FRUIT PANNA COTTA Step. 1 In a bowl place gelatin over cold water and let stand about 1 minute to soften.

Ingredients: 5 gelatin sheets 2 tablespoons cold water 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup Milk 1/3 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3-4 tablespoon fruit purée

Step 2. In a large saucepan bring cream, and sugar just to a boil over moderately high heat, stirring.

Step. 3 Remove pan from heat and stir in gelatin mixture and vanilla.

Step. 4 Once cooled whisk in Passion Fruit Purée or any fruit purée you desire.

Step. 5 Divide cream mixture into any 4inch Silicon Mould and cool to room temperature. Chill ramekins, covered, at least 4 hours or overnight.

Serve with fresh fruits and fruit purée

We went to Istanbul first and from there we began a super adventurous road trip and explored various destinations including Izmir, Bodrum, Blue Lagoon in Fethiye and Antalya. I went with my husband and kids, Zaviyar is 6 years old and Ariana is a year old.
