Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I wanted to open a coffee shop since 2006. I always knew that wherever life took me I wanted to retire in my coffee shop with the perfect cup of coffee, and I worked towards making it happen. It took me more than 10 years but Alhamdullilah I got there.

What was your “aha!” moment?

I was making a restaurant proposal for a friend based on a small cafe setup which I experienced in Amsterdam. While working on it I realized how doable it was and how ready I was. Obviously when I started there was a steep learning curve, but I am glad I was able to implement it much earlier in my life than I had planned.

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

I changed my career from a finance professional to a cafe owner. Haven't considered another change so far.

When was a time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

As an entrepreneur you face a new set of problems every day. It’s important to look at the controllable ones and have faith that the rest will fall into place. In the worst of times I now (after an advice from a customer) sit down and thank God for random good things in life that helps me put the magnitude of existing problems in perspective, and also gives me that push to get up and get things in order.

I don't have a bucket list.

What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

The boss is not his/her own boss. The fear of a boss is replaced by other factors, you still have to wake up early and work weekends. You are still accountable and you have to evaluate your performance on your own.

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

Jehan Ara (The NEST), I love the space she has created and the opportunities she has provided to numerous young entrepreneurs. Her commitment inspires me.

Describe a day in your life The day typically starts with phone calls followed by coffee at home.

Then I go to the cafe and deal with the problems at hand. On a good day I already have friends waiting at the cafe, I either commission an innovative dish/frappe or make one and then test with whoever is around at the café. Everyday is different but I end it with a boardgame (Currently "Catan") followed by cleaning and closing the cafe.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

That I am lazy and luck only supports the people who work hard enough.

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

"When making a big decision always make sure you are running towards something and not running away from a situation."

Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with?

Any world leader who wants to have dinner with me.

Admiration, disagreement or discourse any such interaction would be an interesting experience.

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

Family, coffee and my willpower.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Believe in yourself, plan, learn and always know that unless it requires 'too much work' something is not quite right.

What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

Tell us a little about yourself. How did your interest in fashion designing begin?

Beeno Farooq (CEO): Clothes have always been a passion of mine. I started designing for close family and friends to keep myself busy.

After a sublime response, clients started pouring in which made me see the potential my designs had and from there I gradually built my brand.

Where do you derive your inspiration from?

The collections are conceptualized to reflect a fusion of the past, the present, the conventional and the contemporary taking a form through art, architecture and culture from all over the world to create timeless detailing’ encapsulated into sublime attires.

What are the pros and cons of being a fashion designer?

Pros: It’s an absolute satisfaction to have our work appreciated and adorned by our lovely clients.

Cons: The designs get copied so quick and are sold for cheaper rates not realizing that designers put so much effort and time researching new trends and trying to create innovative pieces.

Which one is your favourite creation by far?

Pieces from our bridal collection “Bella Rose” have always been very dear to us.

Describe your clientele. What kind of women carry your outfits?

There are so many inspirational designers out there but to name a few, Iris Van Herpen; her 3D printed ensembles are a game changer for wearable prints.

On the other hand Elie Saab’s alluring ensembles puts one in a spell binding reverie.

Is it hard to juggle between work and personal life?

For us family always comes first! We try to keep working hours fixed and not bring work home so we can spend quality time with our loved ones.

Any advice for an aspiring fashion designer? Or someone in the same field as you?

We believe one should stay true to their aesthetics, be able to identify their niche and stay as original as they can.

Lastly, where do you see Maison De Lace in another 5 years?

We take our time and measure our steps carefully as we make each decision to take our brand forward. In 5 years we aim on expanding and strengthening our bridal identity also gradually diversifying into different price brackets and to follow the growing prĂŞt demand to capture different markets. ture Furthermore, we plan to veninto different techniques to add depth and variation to our textiles in order to facilitate our couture.

uraan chapter 2 An exhibition by Kaarvan Crafts Foundation was held recently where the resilient women entrepreneurs from far flung villages of Bahawalpur, Lodhran and Multan not only showcased and sold their craft products but also took orders for later deliveries. Interestingly many of these women have also been digitally enabled by Kaarvan through comprehensive digital literacy training.

Visitors connected with the women through their crafts, colours, and patterns — visual design that touched upon their individual values and standards. Uraan Chapter 2 is all about giving wings to local artisans to achieve their passions and dreams.
