Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I’m a lawyer by profession and have worked for different law firms before jumping on the entrepreneurial bandwagon. My husband dreamt big for me and he incited me to let go of the employee tag and become my own boss.

What was your “aha!” moment?

Seeing things falling in the right place and Souchaj growing bit by bit, moving forward inch by inch ... it’s an ahaa every day!!

Who has been the greatest inspiration in your life?

My greatest inspiration has been my better half, “Junaid”. I wouldn’t be where I’m today, without his support and encouragement. He’s been the driving force throughout my Souchaj journey.

When was the time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

Setbacks happen, so expect and accept them when they come. It goes hand in hand with trying something bigger and better.

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

Listen to all but do as you want!!

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

There are many but the one woman that I really look up to is Amal Clooney. The list of her accomplishments is never ending. She is a lawyer, a human rights teacher, and a mother of two. She does all this with such perfection, grace and poise that she has become an inspiration for me.

Describe a day in your life Well, it's generally similar exercises each day: waking up early in the morning for the kids. After sending them to school, I prepare myself for a long day ahead. I attempt to plan the absolute best I can, for myself and for the business, every single day. As soon as I get to the studio, I sit with my team to review last day working and discuss daily tasks. I have kept second half of the day for researching and sketching ideas. I try to leave by 6pm so that I can reach back in time to spend some quality time with my children.

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

1. The love of my loved ones. They give me the strength to move on in life with enthusiasm 2. My children, my reason for never giving up.

3. Last but not the least, I greatly cherish seeing Souchaj grow every day.

What is the #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

Go skydiving, which I doubt would ever get off my list What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

I was under the impression that being your own boss meant to have flexible working hours and can accordingly manage things your way. However, with great authority comes great responsibility; hence you get no time off and have to work around the clock for the business to be prosperous.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

No "failure" as such but challenges yes! But they are a part of life.

Challenges are what make life interesting, overcoming them is what makes it meaningful.

Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with?

Jacinda Ardern. A strong headed woman with just the perfect amount of resilience, confidence, and empathy is the kind of woman that I would love to have dinner with.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Courage is your fuel to achieve amazing success in life, follow your dreams and exercise courage. In sure enough time, you will be unstoppable.

This week, Team Paperazzi headed over to The Melt in Karachi. The Melt is a modern-day burger joint, serving smashed beef patties & chicken fritters in artisan bun with signature MeltSauce. The burgers are cheesy from the inside and totally awesome from the outside. The restaurant itself has a very cool vibe to it, reminding us a lot of Shake Shack!

Why did you become a designer?

I’ve been a fashion enthusiast ever since I was kid I would see my mother going from bazaar to bazaar picking out materials and then taking them to tailors to create something unique of her own. I fell in love with the whole process. That freedom to create something of your own fascinated me and when I grew up I had no doubt over what I wanted to do for a living.

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

My mother, personally and professionally! She always pushed me to live my dreams. I also owe my sartorial sense to my mother, watching her create her own identity and expressing herself through what she wore. She inspired me to become who I am today.

DESIGNER IN CONVERSATION WITH SUNDAS WAHEED WHO TALKS TO US ABOUT HER LOVE FOR FASHION, FOOD AND MUCH MORE.

Tell us about the time when you had to deal with a difficult client.

I once had to deal with a client who unreasonably demanded a two-week delivery at all costs and I dedicated my whole time and energy towards it, only for them to withdraw at the time of delivery. I was initially disappointed but that episode taught me a lot.

What’s the funniest thing you were asked in an interview?

I was once asked in an interview for a 1-year internship if I plan to have kids during that year. I found it bizarre and tragically funny because I already had a kid and the fact that they asABOUT ME!

What’s your motto?

There’s this quote by Bernard Shaw that I try to live my life by: “The people who make it in this world look for the circumstances they want, and if they don’t find them, they create them.”

What is one thing people would be surprised to find about you?

I am a foodie and I eat anything and everything. I am big on junk food and can never resist a good burger and fried chicken.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now…?

A global fashion icon that puts Pakistan on the international fashion map. A designer who has also redefined the fashion identity for young girls all over the world.

What would you be if you were not a designer?

A fighter pilot! I always wanted to break barriers and inspire woman to contribute more to society. A female fighter pilot can break both; the sound and social barrier.

What is your creative process before you launch a collection?

The process is simple. It all starts with brain storming sessions that lead to initial sketches. Once the sketches are ready, a colour scheme and fabric is selected on which handwork and embroidery is done. Finally the first sample is made. The first

sample is refined by repeating the process at least 2 to 3 times to get the final outfit.

Who has been your mentor in this industry and what would you like to say to them today?

My khala and Khalu. They have been the guiding light of my professional life. They run their own fashion brand by the name of Limelight. From a very humble beginning their brand has become one of the most renowned in industry. Their story has taught me that if your will is strong enough you can achieve anything.

The only thing I would like to say to them today is THANKYOU. What’s your favorite song to belt out in car?

It would be some classic by Coke Studio.
