Inspired by the artistic passion, Julie Johnsen is an interior architect having more than 15 years of experience, is now the Vice President of Kit&Kaboodle. A US based brand with multiple showrooms in Lahore, is known for the finest furnishings and luxury home dĂŠcor accessories. She is the mother of a toddler and travels a lot due to her business. Being a working mom and a successful business woman, she is a true inspiration for many of us in this region as well.
MOMMY What was your worst fear of being a mother? Before becoming a mother, I had a different approach and vision that I can be away from my baby to focus on work completely. But I am so attached to my baby that I can cut down on my work just to have more time with him. I do work smartly and use my time wisely now. How do you see yourself before and after him? Being a mother, it is such a universal feeling that I feel for all mothers and children. For instance, I see a mother carrying kids in streets and I sympathize more to them what life is ahead of them and it makes me concerned for them as well. What surprised you the most after becoming a mother? I was surprised to know that I can be attached to my child to this extent. I was 36 when Marelius came into my life and for a long time, I have been working hard and focusing on my career. This little man has totally shifted my viewpoint about myself. If I knew how amazing it would be to be a mother, I might have been chosen

this 10 year before. What inspired you then and now? Not a lot has changed about my inspirations. I got to know about the things parents need for their baby and now we are developing a baby range for K&K. One advice for working mothers? Spend your time wisely. When I am with him I try to put my gad-
gets away, when I feed him I do not read the news on the phone but try to connect with him. When spending time with my family or playing with my child I try to keep my focus on them nothing else. When I am at work my focus is there. Work is never ending but the time I have with my child is precious and would never come back and I do not compromise on this at all.
Any support from your husband in maintaining a work-life balance? My husband is taking time off his work while I am neck deep busy in my work here in Pakistan or working anywhere else in the world. Every child needs both mother and father and since he’s born he had never been away from us for not more than 30 minutes. We never left him with a nanny, when I am
ON CALL busy Terje is taking care of him. It is very pleasing to see that my husband has a very strong bond with our son, he can feed him he can take care of all his tasks and it gives a feeling of deep love towards both of them. What is Kit&Kaboodle for you? Kit&Kaboodle is my first baby and Marelius is the second. Both of them are close to my heart and require a lot of love and attention to grow and develop with time.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
QUEEN! A TITLE JUST ABOVE
For this mother's day we asked these super mom’s how they maintain a balance between family and work! As a mother, how do you explain to smaller children why you have to spend time away at work? Children learn their work ethics from their parents. Kids see their mothers as a role model. So you have to show your kids everyday how to make choices to better your life. It’s a constant struggle but mothers have to take this tough road and lead by example. What can professional mothers do to manage their time better? Working moms have it tough. One has to use time saving hacks. You need to know how to get the most done in the least amount of time, use shortcuts and plan strategically.
I love to go out with my children on weekends, sunday brunch followed by play dates, horse riding and swimming sessions make our weekends interesting. I also like to catch up on our conversations over the weekend, this way I feel I can compensate for the time spent away from kids. What is the most important piece of advice you have for mothers who are pursuing a career? The best career advice I can give to working moms is you could do anything you put your mind to even if you want to be president of Pakistan. Just believe in yourself and know there are no limits of what you set your mind to. Just be confident and take initiative.
How do you spend weekends with kids?
As a mother, how do you explain to smaller children why you have to spend time away at work? Luckily, I work from home. I don't think I would have the heart to leave my child home and do a 9-5 job. I'm just an overly obsessed first time mom!

What can professional mothers do to manage their time better? They can keep weekends free, show up on the special events, take vacations together, not bring work home, or work from home if they can manage. How do you spend weekends with kids? My baby is only 8 months. On weekends we usually spend time with extended family, friends, go to festivals (if there are any happening), go out for meals. Hopefully when she's older we'll be able to do alot more.

What is the most important piece of advice you have for mothers who are pursuing a career? Don't take out your work frustrations on your children. Enjoy with them!
ALYZEH GABOL | MODEL As a mother, how do you explain to smaller children why you have to spend time away at work? Since my mother is immensely supportive towards my work, she takes care of Miraal while i'm working or travelling but now that she’s growing up, she understands my routine but yes it becomes quite difficult when i'm not in town for days. What can professional mothers do to manage their time better? I sometimes take Miraal to my shoots that are in the studio, that manages my time with her well but otherwise whenever you're free just spend time with the your child. How do you spend weekends with kids? I take her out it depends what her mood is like. What is the most important piece of advice you have for mothers who are pursuing a career? Please dont feel guilty about building a future for your child. Being a working mother does not make you a bad mother, all that you’re achieving now will help ur child grow in the future.
How do you spend weekends with kids? Weekends are a big challenge to get by when there’s an 11 year old and 2 year old at hand with a totally different set of requirements for entertainment . My son usually has his own independent plans and the little one is still mainly on our agenda. We don’t follow any set routine so each weekend has its own pace. What is the most important piece of advice you have for mothers who are pursuing a career? Focus on yourself and personal growth. It is way more important than monetary achievements. A happy and occupied mind is the key to keeping the household happy.
KHADIJA MALIK | ENTREPRENEUR As a mother, how do you explain to smaller children why you have to spend time away at work? I don’t believe children need to be given explanations - just the reassurance that they come first and that you are always there for them. Even so, small children have maids around them and

As a mother, how do you explain to smaller children why you have to spend time away at work? Thankfully I haven’t had to answer my kids on this. I guess when they grow up seeing a working mom it’s nothing different or unusual for them. Luckily, my usual work day involves a lot of trips home for lunch and small things so they don’t quite get to miss me too much. What can professional mothers do to manage their time better? One thing that I want to improve about my day is starting it earlier than I usually do. I think an early start can really be a solution to time management problems. Days when I don’t snooze after kids have left for school I end up with getting lots done.
As a mother, how do you explain to smaller children why you have to spend time away at work? A child is not born with the sense of 'how many hours does my mother need to spend with me to be a good mother'. I think personally the quality of time spent with children is way more important than quantity. I make time to ensure I am there for anything important in her life. Beyond that, she has always known her mom to be a 'Boss' which I think is a great example to set for her. What can professional mothers do to manage their time better? Honestly, the first thing to do is to come to terms with the fact that you're not in competition with anyone else for 'best mother' competition. You will manage your life your way and someone else will manage it their way. There is no right or wrong.

career? Don't be too hard on yourself. As i said there is no right or wrong way of doing things. Only YOUR way; which will work for you and your family.
they take over a lot of the mother’s tasks, and so the role of a mother changes/evolves. These are choices women make. This question would never be asked of a man. What can professional mothers do to manage their time better? Nothing. They need to raise their children to know that this is the world’s normal. Pakistan needs to catch up. Plus what about mothers of girls? Should they be teaching them that they have to apologise to work? I don’t believe we need to have to manage time better. Or that being a working mother is an issue. It beats being a kept woman in Pakistani society. Helps the women not be behoven to anyone. How do you spend weekends with kids? Mostly doing nothing, but together. What is the most important piece of advice you have for mothers who are pursuing a career? Go for it. And don’t apologise for having a drive to achieve when other Pakistani women don’t. 2019

Therefore, this was the idea and the motivation behind my brainchild ‘Hope NotOut’ whereby I wanted to establish a socially conscious business that gives back to the underprivileged, giving them hope. What is your vision for the brand? Our vision is to be an Apparel retail brand that represents the values of sportsmanship and a brand for the people of Pakistan.
We are committed to providing superior service, outstanding quality and value to the market. The essence of Hope Not Out is to provide relevant, essential and timeless fashion for my fans and peers around the world. What inspired you to start Hope Not-Out? happiness and hope to those who need it. “Hope Not-Out” is a brand with a cause; having profits shared and donated to provide and empower people in need so they can also have an opportunity to achieve their fullest potential and participate in and contribute to all aspects of life. Describe Hope Not Out in three words. Cricket, passion and people! How would you describe your collection style? We want to be a completely mass-centric brand, which means that where certain fashion elements will be retained within the designs, we will simultaneously be making sure that our apparel is wearable, attracting conventional customers who dominate the market. Fundamentally, Hope Not Out embodies today’s contemporary lifestyle choices, simplicity in design and quality in substance. In your opinion, what is the hardest area in building a brand? Marketers would probably agree that brands are built with numbers and it's not easy. Some vouch out to say that brands are made of a strong customer base and catering to all kinds of expectations is almost impossible. Product variety, quality, vernacular, fits and textures require dedication of the entire team and attention to detail of the entire process. The hardest thing to build in a long lasting brand is the “right kind of teamwith the right kind of mindset”.
