Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I’m actually donning a lot of hats – journalist, author, PR practitioner and event manager. I always wanted to be a journalist and writer, PR is something you could say I stumbled on when I took it up for a channel, and event management I took up by choice, but was not something I always wanted to do.

What was your “aha!” moment?

If by that you mean a moment of triumph for me, or maybe an achievement of one-upmanship, I don’t think there has been any! I have experienced many moments of success I could have never even dreamt of, but my reaction to them have not been of ‘aha’, but perhaps more of gratitude.

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

Yes and no. I never changed my career, but just adopted new ones along with the old!

reference book on Pakistani cuisine, with no idea how I was going to get it published. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason, and we may not know it, but it is for our own good. When I had almost completed the book, I happened to meet Amina Saiyid who was then heading OUP and mentioned that I had been working on this book and she asked to see it. She sent the manuscript to the editors in England and it got approved, and presto, I had become the author of the first book to come out of Pakistan on the cuisine of our country!

When was a time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

I am an eternal optimist so have never felt completely discouraged by anything! I’ll give you an example.

OUP contacted me to write a book on Pakistani Cuisine for their children’s series.

I was really excited at this huge honour and opportunity, and sent them the chapter headers, and the first chapter, all of which were approved.

Then as I was working on the other chapters, I got a letter saying that all their illustrated series had been scrapped, including this one, so the book would no longer be required. I was really disappointed, but instead of moping or feeling completely discouraged, I decided to continue working on the book, since I had already put in a lot of time and energy into it, and I thought it was a great idea, that had never been done before in Pakistan. So instead of keeping it as a children’s book, I changed the style of writing to make it a

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

When in doubt, cut it out!

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

My family, friends and my writings!

What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

Lots of places that I haven’t travelled to yet – Spain, Greece, Italy…!

What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

There is no such thing as a holiday! You are always working.

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

Yasmeen Lari! I think she is truly incredible. If I can do half as much as her at her age, I would consider myself blessed!
