Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? I have always been in love with painting. My art teachers throughout my schooling years encouraged me to pursue it and my parents have been the biggest support because they have let me travel and explore for inspiration. What was your “aha!” moment? You know when someone walks up to you and asks are you Anum Ashraf? Gosh that’s literally the best feeling ever. And when people talk about your work, it just feels great, and that was my “aha” moment. Did you ever consider or experience a career change? I have always been interested in Interior Decoration. But other than that, I give painting classes, so my career choices have and always will revolve around Art.

2. My lifeline, my cat Tiffany 3. All my friends and buddies whom I cannot function without. What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list? I have already displayed my art in group shows, but I am yet to tick off doing a solo show from my bucket list. Apart from that, displaying my work in International art galleries is something that is yet to be ticked off my list. Also, my wish to teach art! I haven’t pursued it yet but it is definitely something I look forward to doing in near future InshaAllah.

THE HOUSE OF KAMIAR ROKNI Neo-Folk by The House Of Kamiar Rokni was a celebration of ethnicity within a traditional yet global narrative. The collection incorporated multiple traditional textiles and treatments using block printing, tie & dye and the richly decorative fabric of brocade, to present a collection that we can't stop raving about!

ZAHA The collection comprised of flamboyant yet easy to wear silhouettes featuring clashing animal prints in punchy primary colours. The showcase pieces were mostly all red because the colour has a special significance in HSY’s life as it was the first colour he saw when he got his sight back, 25 years ago. 48

SANIA MASKATIYA Isfahan by Sania Maskatiya was a nod to the seductive lustre of the Orient. It combined the elegance of the ancient East with a modern aesthetic. From extravagant kaamdani lehngas to pink hued ensembles to shades of red with low neck backs and gold tie bags, the collection was surely a memorable one by the design house.

IN CONVERSATION WITH DANISH LOCHNER

LET’S GET FIT Want to tone your stomach? Get stronger? Work on your general fitness levels? A good personal trainer should know exactly where to start! That is why we got in touch with Danish Lochner, a personal trainer and sports therapist based in Karachi, to give us some tips and tricks to get on the right fitness regimen.

58

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2019

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Danish Lochner, I am 28 years old born in Austria and raised in Karachi, Pakistan. Pursuing a degree in sound engineering in an honors degree of science from the London School of Audio Engineering (SAE) specializing in fields of medical practices with the use of sound such as ultrasonic frequencies. My hobbies revolve around music, bodybuilding, art, literature and hunting. How did you create your passion for fitness into the profession you have today? My passion for fitness ignited when I was called for public service into the Austrian army at the age of 17. I excelled in my outdoor training skills, which were extremely tough and motivated me to lose weight and become better, faster and stronger in all aspects of life. Here or then it had become a major part of my routine. A firm believer of discipline and keeping one’s word, especially as a trainer. After years of training myself it had become evident that a 9 to 5 desk job was definitely not for me. It was around 9 years ago when I saw a gap within the fitness industry and then decided to pursue my passion fortunate enough to be able to turn it into my profession today. After training some of the big names of Karachi from politicians to business corporate executives as my clients it gave me the confidence to further establish myself as an elite fitness trainer and pushed me to compete in body building as an athlete. This has helped me focus on teaching correct form and further awareness of health and fitness. During my time as a personal trainer I have closely worked with some of the best doctors of Physiotherapy learning medical practices and techniques which in turn then cooperated in my clients’ routine lately focusing on training with the physically impaired or even elderly. By creating routines gear towards focusing on

preexisting injuries and correcting muscles imbalances in order to creating a healthier body and mind. Currently I am working on starting up my own fitness center where I’ll be housing some of the best trainers and fitness activities in Karachi which will be up and running end of May 2019 (Inshallah). What does a typical day at the gym look like for you, do you change up your fitness routines regularly or do you have a fitness regimen you stick by consistently? My day usually starts off with a small meal followed by my first strength training session before heading out to work. This training session would normally consist of 30 – 40 minutes performing heavy compound movements followed by 10 minutes High-intensity interval training (HIIT). Around 6 hours later I perform another strength training session which involves methods like isolation movements and time under tension resistances followed by a 30 min LIC Low Intensity Cardio within this regime nothing stays constant, yet constantly evolving through processes ranging from push ‘n’ pull to German GVTC volume training and focusing on switching up tempos of muscle movements in order to stimulate as many muscle fibers most effectively while keeping fresh muscle memory. Always focusing on creating balance between strengths and weaknesses I wouldn’t say sticking to a very generalized routine would be ideal for everyone as no one’s physique is the same. What are your top exercise routines and suggestions to keep looking lean all year round? Although normally I wouldn’t say I focus on “keeping lean” rather it being more of a side effect for constantly eating clean and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Low body fat and a sculpted physique will naturally occur after being so meticulous about what one is putting into their body.

Particularly when speaking in regards to caloric expenditure or surplus and quality of nutrients that are being consumed. Calculating your basal metabolic rate and figuring out what macro/ micro nutrient split to follow is essential for everyone who is looking to be healthy. Once you have figured out what your BMR is you can then establish how to stay in a caloric deficit. Which would ultimately result in “fat loss” or staying in a state maintenance depending on how much of a deficit you are in. So, staying in a small caloric deficit in comparison to your based metabolic rate would result in a leaner yet stronger physique. What would be your advice for those training to lose weight? The first thing here would be to establish the difference between weight loss and the loss of subcutaneous and visceral fat. Secondly another thing to keep in mind would be that there is no such thing as targeting loss of fat of a specific body part as fat loss is an overall process. By the shrinking of adipose cells through various methods such as mitochondria and the expulsion of excess energy through thermogenesis. Then one has a clearer picture of how to go about losing fat while retaining muscle mass. It is important to know that the body goes through certain hormonal changes so focusing on your macro ‘protein fat and carbs’ intake varies due to embolic and catabolic environments. In my opinion anything more than a 500 caloric deficit would be unhealthy as we maintain a catabolic state. What are your go-to kitchen staples for maintaining a healthy, balanced diet? Depending on your physical condition, age, gender, and vitals, it can be established which macro and micro nutrient breakdown is most effective for each individual. Normally it would be advised to stay GMO, processed and refined.
