DOMESTIC GODDESS IF ANYONE HAS MASTERED THE ART OF MULTI-TASKING, IT’S AMINA ALI. SHE IS THE FOUNDER AND CEO OF DELISH, CONFETTI AND LAHORE CHILDREN’S CENTRE, A MOTHER OF THREE AND A MINIATURE ARTIST. WE ARE MOST CERTAINLY INTRIGUED TO KNOW HOW SHE MANAGES IT ALL.

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I established Confetti in 2006, which was a one stop solution furnishing all requirements for children’s parties and events.

There was a tremendous push from my clients to provide them with an end to end service that included the catering as well. I was initially outsourcing the cakes and collaborating with caterers but then decided to try my hand at it. From the beginning, I have been drawn to art. I am a trained miniature artist from NCA and began my career bringing my ideas to life on wasli paper. Creating beautiful cakes and desserts is just an extension of my deep love of art.

What was your “aha!” moment?

I felt that no matter how much I attended to in a day, I wasn’t getting everything done simply because there aren’t enough hours in a day and I was merely doing too much. The greatest self-discovery has been that I can’t possibly and don’t need to do everything on my own.. And most importantly, I have learned to delegate, which is key to growth as an entrepreneur.

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

I never intended a career change but ended up pursuing a number of them. I am a trained miniature artist and a qualified teacher. I pursued a career in education and art side by side but then went on to found Confetti, Delish and Lahore Children’s Centre. I have recently resumed painting, my first love.

When was time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

I seldom feel discouraged. No matter how bad a day you are having... there are only 24 hours in it. It has to get better. I believe in patience and in working hard and most often am rewarded for it.

and appreciate the unfathomable talent out there.

What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

There are always hard decisions to take and you won’t necessarily be liked for them. Integrity is key. I have also realised your employees don’t have to remain married to your business for life. They may outgrow it or vice versa and that’s ok. It is important to constantly grow and evolve and see where the road takes you.

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

There are many admirable boss ladies out there but one very close to my heart is my phupo and mother in law, Snooky Ali. I have learnt so much from her. She is committed to her family, exemplary at her work, a philanthropist, a wonderful friend, manages her home fabulously and still looks immaculate all the time.

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

There is no limit to learning and don’t ever think you know everything!

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

My family, my work and Allah’s countless blessings.

What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

I wish to attend the world’s largest cake show. I want to go as a visitor, not as a participant...at least not yet! I just want to go

Describe a day in your life Early to rise and not so early to bed.l. My morning ritual involves spiritual cleansing, followed by my most favourite meal of the day, breakfast! The work day usually starts in the kitchen, school runs in between, a stop at my clinic when needed and then I am back to the kitchen. The evenings are spent with family and working from home.

Complete this sentence: To me, a #BossLady is…”

Sure of herself, follows what she believes is right and knows how to balance her work and home life.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. There is always something to learn. Don’t let failures hold you back. Walk away with the lesson learnt.

Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with?

She isn’t one yet but I do think she could be in the future, Michelle Obama. I am currently reading Becoming and it’s an inspiring read.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Follow them. I truly believe each and every individual can achieve whatever they set their heart and mind to.

In conversation with Seher Tareen, the founding president of COMO Museum of Art, which is Pakistan’s first private museum dedicated to the preservation and promotion of contemporary and modern art!

How did COMO museum happen?

The idea of COMO took shape while I was doing my masters at Saint Martins but the dream was floating in my head long before. It was then that I decided I was going to make it happen one day. Now that it’s happening it feels surreal.

What does COMO stand for?

I love the modern art (1960s/1970s) that Pakistan has produced and I want the younger generations to engage with and appreciate our modern masters, such as Bashir Mirza and Sadequain. And then there are so many contemporary artists creating amazing work that I feel needs to be seen in Pakistan and internationally, and promoted by a proper institution that represents Pakistan.

That is where COMO comes in. We want to provide institutional support to our modern masters and contemporary greats.

How does it aim to encourage art & culture in Pakistan and internationally?

The aim for COMO is to create a culture of appreciation for the arts. The museum is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of contemporary and modern art. Moreover we want to engage the public through various programmes and partnerships with academic institutions (field trips and workshops for students) and other organisations like the LLF (Lahore Literary Festival) and the LBF (Lahore Biennale Foundation).

We hope to make COMO a cultural haven in Lahore.

Will you be showcasing works of only renowned artists or can the young, upcoming talent brigade avail this great opportunity?

For our first show aptly titled ‘ONE’ we are featuring the work of six artists.

Rashid Rana, Risham Syed, Ali Kazim, Naiza Khan, Salman Toor and Saba Khan.

They are established artists at different stages in their careers. Together they make for a diverse and strong group. In the future we hope to host artist residencies and programmes to work with younger up and coming artists as well.

We can’t stop raving about how beautifully constructed COMO museum is. Tell us a little about the creative process behind it.

I was searching for the perfect building for a few months when I came across a hidden jewel in the middle of a mostly commercial block in Gulberg, Lahore. The building was tucked away in a narrow lane and was quite run down but as soon as I walked in I knew this was it! We started renovations but the bones of the structure remain unchanged. It is a Nayyer Ali Dada building, built in the 1980s as a residence but it was designed like an art gallery, so it was definitely meant to be!

When does it open for the public?

We will be hosting the preview during the LLF in Feb ‘19 but the public opening will be in March. And we couldn’t be more excited!
