READY,

SET, SHOOT WITH ASAD-UL-HAQ

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I started Ambience a long time back, in 1993. I have a Bachelors in Filmmaking and Advertising from the USA, so I came back and worked in an ad agency for some time. Basically we are a production company, so we do ads and work with different agencies.

We did a feature three years ago ‘Dekh Magar Pyaar Say’; that was our first and only feature. But I basically do commercials, and I am in love with them. We just finished an ad for Coke and before that we did something for MCB, so we’ve got a very different kind of a clientele. We get into a job and within 3-4 weeks we are done.

If you had not chosen to be an adman, what do you think you would be working as?

Probably an architect, I love interiors, I love building things.

Who has been your biggest influence?

With the kind of work we do, I don’t think there’s one person you look up to. You look up to different people for different things.

Sometimes you like someone’s style, or you like the way they tell stories, you’re always picking up things as you go along. For instance when I saw Blade Runner by Ridley Scott, I was really young and even though I didn’t know I would be doing this, but I saw it and I was like wow whatever they have done, they’ve done beautifully. I remember Star Wars when it came out, I wanted to be like Luke but I had no idea who Luke was or what he did. So you know those things, they just stay with you.

What does your typical day look like?

I start very early. I’m out by 9:30-10. And then work does not end till late. Like last night I was at somebody’s bonfire, and I was still talking to my client till 1am because we are releasing something today, and they wanted some changes done. So there are days that are really really chock-a-block but there are also days when you’re very chilled.

After Dekh Magar Pyaar Say, are you planning on making more films?

I wanted to but I am not too sure because I can’t do mass media, I enjoy this more. If I do something I don’t think it’s going to be for traditional cinema, I’ll do something that’s more Indie.

What would you say is the most exciting part of your job?

Its fun! I don’t know if you’ve ever been on a shoot, but you have a hundred odd people and they’re all behind you or in front of you and calling all the shots is taxing, but it’s also fun.

Because you plan something for 3-4 weeks in advance and on the shoot day it all comes together. And what’s nice is you go and present a job and sometimes when you’re presenting you’re not even looking on the screen, you’re looking at the client’s faces or the agencies faces, and when they smile, it’s really very nice.

Tell us about your passion for bikes.

I love bikes, I’ve been riding since college days but I stopped and then picked it up again. Now I ride with my son so that’s great. I ride at least once a week, and we normally do Sunday mornings where we go to the highway and come back.

These days we’re going at night because the weather is so nice.

Is there any media personality that you would love to work with here or abroad?

I’ve worked with pretty much everyone here. But I’d love to be on a Hollywood set seeing a big feature film being made because the way they do it is beyond whatever we do.

These days though, what’s fun is working with the younger audiences and younger talent.

Can you tell us a little about the 48-hour Film Festival?

Basically it’s an international Film Festival, so we got the rights for Pakistan and we did a launch for Karachi. We were thinking we’d get 7-8 entries but then we got 23 entries and 25 were the max we could get. So looking at that, it really worked out nicely. Then we had 3 films that came out really well, 1 of which won and we are taking the winners to America to the Film Festival Headquarters and we’re presenting it there with other films from around the world. It’s the first time we did this, but we got to meet younger talent from different places to come around and hang at our studio. We got great feedback from this so we’re going to do Lahore and Islamabad now, and hopefully Karachi again next year.

What is your next project, anything you are currently working on?

I’m currently working on a corporate film for Sri Lanka; I’ll probably go there soon. That’s something interesting because I’ll be traveling around Sri Lanka and shooting something for a Sri Lankan client.

You’ve been working in the Pakistani industry for over 25 years now, are there any plans of taking your work global?

I do go shoot overseas but you know, it’s quite less. Over there the controls are very different. So Pakistan is more fun, I’m more used to the people here and the clients here. But globally we’re doing something like the 48 hour Film Festival, so it’s nice to represent Pakistan at that level. But then you’re not just talking about “My ad, I’m the director”, you’re talking about a whole generation coming alive and doing something.

You’re known for traveling around the world; is there any specific place that you have taken inspiration from in terms of work?

Recently I’ve fallen in love with Istanbul, its beautiful! I’ve been going there for the last 10 years but recently, I’ve started shooting there and I’ve fallen in love with it again. Its so Europe but not Europe. The back gullies are so nice and the cobble stoned streets and the people, it’s a very friendly very alive city. So I love that, but it changes. For some time I was in love with Cape Town, New York has been one of the nicer ones. But Istanbul I don’t know, there’s something about it; it just keeps pulling me back.

Tell us about any challenges you may have come across since you first started your career.

When we started off it wasn’t like this so I think the whole industry has evolved in front of us. It’s growing. Because feature films have come in, they need more people working for them so that’s also taken from advertising and gone into feature. A lot of those that work for feature films have an advertising background; the production designers, the art directors, the stylists, the makeup artists, they’re all from the commercial industry. And then a new, digital lot is coming in, there are some great bloggers and you look at their work and you’re like “Wow”. So they’re all going to find a way into what we’re doing and its all going to muddle up.

Is there any piece of advice you would like to give an aspiring filmmaker?

Don’t hurry the whole process; don’t look for short cuts. I mean I am as good as my last job, even though I’ve done whatever I’ve done, but there are no short cuts. You have to keep at it. You’re always evolving. But once you’ve reached that level then you cant just sit back and chill, you have to reinvent the wheel, you need to tweak something or fix something just to make it come alive for next time. Otherwise they’ll be like we’ve seen this before. So you’re always evolving, you’re always changing with times.
