Tell us a little about The Loom Studio?

The Loom Studio is a small initiave to uplift one of the subcontinents treasured textile crafts. Currently we are importing hand-woven traditional Indian sarees and running fabrics. These unique textiles are being sourced directly from the weavers of Varanasi in Banaras and Udaipur in Rajasthan. Our selection is a unique blend of current trends and the ethnic traditional classical fashion that takes you through the contemporary back to the Mughals and beyond. The idea is to offer the finest handcrafted textiles of Indian artisans to the people of Pakistan and eventually cater to the international market aswell.

How did you come up with it?

Five years ago my husband and I were were on our honeymoon in Mauritius where we met this couple from Udaipur; Mahesh and Nidhi who became very dear friends of ours. Five years down the lane I shared the 2019

idea of The Loom Studio with Nidhi. Being a resident of Udaipur, she facilitated me in identifying the old weavers there and also in Banaras. With her help I developed a liaison with the craftsmen. Now with Nidhis help I buy the hand-woven sarees directly from the weavers.

What thought process goes behind your final selection of Saris?

The most important thing for me is quality. The ideal fall and look of a saree comes with an amalgamation of the fabric quality and how well it’s tied. The Pakistani market prefers pure fabric sarees. I try my best to buy hand weaves, fused textures, intricate embroideries, feminine prints, skillfull appliquÊs and traditional tapestries that are unique in India as well.

How do you manage to import your saris

areas of India, this will make it an interesting fusion showcasing the craft of various districts. For example the women of Chennai wear Kanchipuram and Kanchivaram; those of Mumbai and Delhi prefer tissue and organza. Similarly, Mysore silk saree, Jamdani saree, Chikankari are other types that will also be showcased.

Which design house do you look up to and why?

I like the work of Gaurang Shah a lot. He is a Hyderabad-based textile designer who is partially responsible for reviving the tradition of handlooms and bringing them back in vogue in India. His designs are absolutely incredible. Locally I also love the work of Nida Azwer and Deena Rehman. Their finely handcrafted outfits with close attention to intricate details and the use of pure fabric are a delight.

What does the future hold for you?

The response to the sarees has been overwhelming and we are receiving orders from all over Pakistan. Right now our focus is on the exhibition in Lahore in February. Depending on how that goes we will plan for exhibitions in Karachi and Islamabad and eventually develop an international clientele.

This is the most challenging part of the process of getting the Sarees to Pakistan. Due to an indirect route of import our product cost is relatively high and delivery time is slightly longer. However at the end the exclusivity, quality and demand of the product makes up for the extra hassle.

What kind of saris do you personally prefer and why?

My favorite is the Chanderi silk saree because of its light, glossy texture and beautiful fall. It gets its name from a city in Madhya Pradesh, known for its historical importance and for its hand woven sarees. These sarees are made with high-quality and extra fine yarns. Because of the transparency and the sheer texture of the fabric it is referred to as ‘woven air’. The bootis are intricately handwoven on the loom and often coated with gold, silver or copper dust.

Considering the unpredictable ties between India & Pakistan, does that have any impact on your work?

The unpredictable ties between India and Pakistan make us divided within our rich craft heritage. It's sad to know that the distance between Udaipur and Lahore is a little more than that between Peshawar and Multan. Even though the distance is not much but managing trade as the Loom Studio is very tough. If the relations get better, the trade will grow multi-fold and things will evolve for better exchange What can we expect from The Loom Studio’s upcoming exhibition?

We are planning the exhibition on 16th February in Lahore. As mentioned earlier we are sourcing the sarees from different
