UP, CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH

THE TEAM BEHIND JINNAH MAN Please tell us about Jinnah Man? After years of planning, leveraging on our experience in the GCC on the luxury retail side as well as experience in Pakistan with textiles, Jinnah was established in 2018. Our vision is to be the first comprehensive menswear luxury brand in the Pakistan market. We are looking at a national footprint followed by international presence in countries with high Pakistan origin nationals. We aspire to be the market leader by dominating across all sales channels including retail, online and personal visits. What makes Jinnah different? The concept at Jinnah is to elevate the national dress or basically give Pakistani new excellent quality products at par with international brands at a reasonable price. The main segment is custom clothing in which we have years of experience and is a disorganized and fragmented market. This business is scattered with tailors/mono brand stores across various cities. By integrating old school bespoke tailoring with technology-based end, which we have been working with, since the last two decades. We aim to bring a quality product with consistency and be able to handle it on larger scale. Starting from the raw material fabrics and production techniques we believe our products are at par with high-end brands. The product and brand offering is

unlike any other clothing brand in Pakistan and sets a new benchmark in the region with branding being consistent across all touch points. What are the products you carry? We have a comprehensive range both in eastern and western wear. The products are Shalwar Kameez, Dress Shirts, Waistcoats, Blazers and Suits. In addition to this we carry the latest collection of Moreschi shoes and leather accessories. Moreschi is one of the leading footwear brands out of Italy available in 145 countries. We have developed the a first of its kind Peshawari Chappal, hand made in Italy and will be receiving stock in the first quarter of 2019. All accessories such as cufflinks are also made in Italy exclusively for Jinnah. Along with this we carry under shirts and socks of the finest quality. We have partnered for shawls which are handmade in Kashmir by one of the leading brands ANDRAAB and, are available in the purest cashmere on Pashmina. How many stores do you have? Our flagship store is located on MM Alam Road in Lahore and we intend to take this on national level soon. Apart from this we offer a VIP visiting bespoke service which anyone can avail by calling our toll free and customer service numbers. The customer can schedule an appointment and our team visits so you can order from the comfort of your home or office. Our online portal is the first of its kind in which shalwar Kameez can be customized with various style details and easy to follow guidelines. These sales channels are backed by a separate customer service department for support ,as well as after sale care. We are investing and putting a lot of effort towards this , as we believe this is one area completely lacking in Pakistan and we want to offer it at a level which is at par with International standards.

SOOPER&JUNOON create musical history in Karachi

he city of lights witnessed the biggest, most-awaited concert of the decade, which hit all the right notes and turned out to be a miracle for all the 90’s kids. Sooper’s undying efforts to bring back the country’s most adored and celebrated sufi rock band – Junoon – to the fore finally turned into a reality after the musical trio stepped on top of the stage with their wonderful energy. Karachiites couldn’t have asked for a better end to the year on 25th December, after they were treated to the most astounding musical event of 2018. Organised by the country’s leading biscuit brand, Peek Freans Sooper, the historical music evening celebrated the nation’s passion for the motherland on the Quaid’s birth anniversary and also honour Junoon’s music spanning three decades. Just the way the concert’s tickets

34

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2019

were all sold out was testament enough for Junoon’s grand comeback. The band’s grand arrival was goose bumps inducing, the tracks sung by the vocal powerhouse Ali Azmat hit the nostalgic chord, the loud and cheering audience livened up the venue ambience, while an exhilarating display of live animation and effects were certainly some of the most memorable moments of the evening. The concert was indeed a roaring success, for it not only made the audience sing along to the trio’s classic tunes but sent them down the memory lane. Also known as the ‘U2 of Pakistan’, Junoon came back with a bang on the auspicious holiday after a 13-year-long hiatus. South Asia’s critically acclaimed band was a sensation throughout the 90s and still manages to have a cult following among the youth. This

proved the night when Junoon performed for a humungous audience comprised of youngsters not just from the 90s but even those born after the band members parted ways to pursue their solo careers. Despite a history of numerous humungous concerts to have taken place in Pakistan, the not so frequent one’s taking place here and there caused a lull in the country’s once thriving music scene. The entertainment industry, particularly the music industry, suffered a lot at the hands of violent extremism and radicalism in the past decade, where unforeseen circumstances, as well as law and order situation threatened to submerge and derail cultural growth amongst the nation. However, the Sooper Junoon concert defied the odds and created history by motivating Pakistan’s music-loving public to step outside and support local music once again. The star-studded event was graced by the likes of legends such as Zohaib Hassan, Wasim Akram and many other Pakistani celebrities and noted personalities as well. The crowning glory of the evening was the much-acknowledged Ladies Only Pink Circle, as women seated there enjoyed the concert with peace and comfort, following its segregated section. Other enclosures were also packed with Junoonis of all ages, who had arrived at the venue to witness history in the making. The stage constructed for the sufi rock music maestros was massive. The evening was hosted by Faizan Haque and the DJ-ing job was done by the country’s top DJ Faisal Baig, who worked his magic with classic rock to set a tone for the rest of the concert. Four amazing, jaw-dropping performances were lined up before the real heroes to take up the stage. Talented bands such as Lyari Underground, Khumaariyan, Tamasha and Sounds of Kolachi kept the audience entertained throughout the show, until Junoon finally made their splendid entry. Each act was wonderful in itself but simultaneously fuelled anticipation among the crowd for their first live gig after so many years. The audience seemed restless and

couldn’t wait to see their rock stars setting the stage on fire. As soon as the trio ascended, the loud and cheery crowd, comprised of more than 10,000 Junoonis, went wild and was evidently swept away. It wasn’t an ordinary sight, for the evening turned into a remarkably spectacular celebration of music in Karachi. The legendary Ali Azmat, Salman Ahmed and Brian O’Connell performed with a backdrop of an impressive light show accompanied by animations and graphical illustrations on display. Junoon kick-started the show by paying tribute to the great Quaide-Azam and later sang their iconic numbers including Khudi, Sayoonee and Saaien to name a few. The band paid a heartfelt tribute to their late fellow musician and a legend himself Junaid Jamshed with his most adored anthem Dil Dil Pakistan, turning the mood of the evening rather emotional and nostalgic. Then Salman Ahmed unexpectedly sang Wish You Were Here, to pay tribute to Pink Floyd, while sitting on the stage’s stairs. Their classic hit

number Chalay Thay Saath saw the emotional Ali Azmat skipping the last line of the song with tears rolling down the audiences’ eyes following the band’s grand reunion. The band drew closer towards the end of the show with their most adored patriotic track Jazba Junoon performed powerfully by the trio, accompanied by a brilliant display of firework, hardly witnessed in recent history. Finally, the evening ended with the national anthem sung in unity by the charged crowd. With this never-to-be-forgotten evening, Peek Freans Sooper once again lived up to its expectations and turned the impossible into the possible by reuniting the most celebrated music troupe of Pakistan. It was also a great night for Karachiites who got to be part of a historical musical affair while enjoying the fusion of fresh and veteran talent spill their magic on a single stage. Hopefully, EBM will come up with more such exciting and emotionally motivated concerts to help keep the country’s cultural zeal moving forward.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

BEHIND

THE DESIGNER

W

In conversation with the talented Maria Asif baig of Manara.

Why did you decide to become a designer? In my childhood I would see my mother put together clothes, I always wanted to choose mine and would give my input. I was always interested in minute details and after my high school I heard about PIFD and that sort of just made it very certain what I wanted to do! Any potential experience / lesson you've learnt through-

38

2019

out your tenure that you'd like to share? Little from what I've learnt, I perceive it is very important to love what you do. When you pursue a career that interests you, not only the goal but the journey itself becomes fun and rewarding. Results are exceptional when you do things with your heart in it. Tell us about a time when you had to deal with a difficult client. What was the

situation and how did you react? Well, majority of my clients ended up pretty happy back in the day when I worked with HSY. I only have stories of them sending me gifts although I no longer associate with client dealing. What inspired you start launch your own design house? I found myself at a place where I gave a lot of effort for free-lance projects. I

realized if I had a strong team and an organized structure I will be able to take on a lot of projects that I really wanted to do. This eventually led me to develop my own design consultancy house. Once I got this out of the way, a year later I launched my own brand Manara. If you weren’t a designer, what would you be doing right now? Interior designing! Spaces fascinate me a lot and the possibility to change them. Which design house do you look up to and why? I find Oscar De La Renta and Zuhair Murad to be phenomenal at what they do. I'm extremely impressed by their authenticity and how they keep recreating yet retaining their signature style! What is your creative process before you launch a collection? My creative process before the launch of any collection is to be inspired by places I visit, people I meet and art that one sees. It’s a constant effortless process of ideas that you decide to put together on paper and then on fabric. I relish working with acclaimed design team and seeing what each individual brings to the table. Since everyone is very opinionated in my team, our creative process involves brain storming, being each other’s critics and bringing those ideas into reality. What’s your motto or the advice you live by? To stay original and innovate, that’s all that will help one sustain in the long run. Having your hands full with your design house, on top of that providing consultancy to textile associates, what motivated you to start Manara? I’ve been in the business of fashion for years. Once the design consultancy was up and running I could not resist the temptation of bringing out an inhouse brand which does not have to take its requirements from a client. I’m free to create whatever I want without any limitations unlike what I do at my design consultancy. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I cry every time I watch SRK die in a movie. Who has been your mentor in this industry and what would you like to say to them today? Hassan Shahryar Yasin, the king of couture, I've had the privilege to know him more as a person, confidante, friend and advisor. Rarely do you find someone who is so not insecure and afraid to impart. Although my experience in design has taught me how to envision and create yet I can't thank him enough for giving me the most wonderful experience of my career and helping me be the person I am today. I’d be very humbled if I can be one fraction of the boss or leader that he was to me to my team! Ten years from now you will be… Somewhere in the Bahamas sipping a margarita, who knows! 2019

Actor, rapper, comedian; how would you best describe yourself? At the end of the day I entertain people with my work, so you can call me an entertainer I guess, as that label would entail everything I do.

|ABOUT ME

You recently attended the Pop Music Conference that was held in Switzerland in October 2018, tell us about the experience? I was invited by University of Bern and a collective called Norient to perform and be part of a panel discussion on social change through music. It was an amazing experience to represent Pakistan and talk about my music in front of a global audience. Most of the people who spoke at the conference were from music colleges and PhD holders. I also got to perform at University of Amsterdam and share my experiences there as well.

in conversation with

ali gul pir

the name ali gul pir needs no introduction. In a short span of time, ali gul pir has become one of the greatest all-time entertainers of the local entertainment industry. His influence in recent years has expanded beyond pakistan; he is the first and only pakistani that has had the honor of being invited to represent the country at the pop music conference in switzerland which was held in october 2018. 42

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2019

How was it interacting with musicians from all across the globe at the Pop Music Conference in Switzerland? It was great to see how so many artists around the world use music to spread social change. I met an artist called Umlilo from Africa who used music to discuss the problems of his country. Also attended many talks in which genres were discussed that I had no idea about earlier. Like Narco music of Mexico or revolutionary street music in Egypt. How did you get into creating music and acting? I have always enjoyed making people laugh. Whether through writing, music or acting. Therefore, after graduating from film school I got into theater. I would do improvisational comedy shows with my comedy troupe for a few thousand rupees. That was my first ever acting job. We did a show called ‘Light On Hai’ which aired on multiple channels. Since I was a teenager I would write poems and songs that I would never share with anyone. ‘Waderai ka beta’ was the first song that I wrote and produced, and I thought it would be very funny; so I produced it and the rest like they say is history. I realized after my first

song that I can make people laugh and dance through my music as well as educate and inform the society. I can play my part in making it (society) a better place for people to live. You’ve actively promoted standup comedy in Pakistan, tell us about your journey so far in this field. I would like to think that I have given comedians various avenues to show their work. Before we just had stage shows or TV or film, basically traditional mediums to showcase our comedy but today we have stand up, improv, musical comedy and so much more. Internet has played a big part in evolving comedy scene of Pakistan. The business of comedy has increased now as brands now spend four times the amount they used to on comedy videos and shows. This has made comedy a viable line of work. Who has been your biggest influence in life? Jerry Seinfeld because his observations are hilarious and he doesn’t use a single bad word on stage. All his shows are hilarious and totally clean. I admire that as making sex jokes and getting a laugh through cursing or what not is easier. From ‘Waderai Ka Beta’ to ‘Sab Ke Bajao’, what motivates you to remain socially relevant? I am a Pakistani. When the economy goes down because of instability in the country it affects me like everyone else. When our society becomes more intolerant it matters to me. I want a better Pakistan, a tolerant and loving world, and that is what motivates me to remain socially relevant. What does your typical day/week look like? My typical day involves me cycling for a bit then going to meetings and doing writing sessions. Then getting home in the evening and spending time with my wife, sometimes my close friends come over. Sometimes I spend hours reading or watching shows/movies. I love watching movies! Can you tell us a little about the genre of music you perform? Rap music has been used by African Americans to reflect their society. All the crime, poverty and struggle they experience is portrayed through music. I have taken that core concept and applied it here in Pakistan. I’ve made satirical rap songs about corrupt politicians, harassers, extremists, violent protestors and so on. Although I hate what rap music has become globally. Rap music has become dumb and most of the songs are only about money and sex. But I would like to bring it back to what it originally was and use it to entertain and help my people. What would you say is the best/most exciting part of your job? That I get to travel and meet wonderful people who inspire me or

give me so much love that it motivates me to work harder. Plus, I love my work, it’s unfair to call it work though. It’s all I know really, takes up most of my time too. What has been your greatest accomplishment? Finding peace with who I am and what I do. I make people smile and reflect the society. Are you currently working on any exciting project? Yes, I’m working on 2 new songs; one is a collaboration. I’m also working on a comedy series. Also recently shot a fresh batch of recreated iconic photos that I will be releasing soon in the media. Tell us about any challenges you have come across, if any, since you first started your career. I started work by being a production assistant at a production house. I would get actors food and carry lights. Then went on to being awarded a Google innovation Award and performing in Switzerland. Any hidden talent that you would like to share with us? I just learnt how to make Dynamite prawns and I can milk a cow… That’s not true, but I think I can do it, it doesn’t look difficult *lol*. Is there any piece of advice you would like to give to your fans? Be honest to yourself. Do what you love and do not think if what your studying or want to do has scope. If you are great at what you do then you will create the scope needed for yourself. And please be kind and tolerant, different is good. We all have different beliefs, cultures and languages but that’s what makes Pakistan great.

Who is your best friend? I've had countless 'best friends' in my life but I really feel like no one has been the way my two sisters Fatima & Alizeh have been. What would you grab if your house was on fire? Phone & laptop most probably since all my work is in those two. What is your destination for the trip of your dreams? Santorini, Greece When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up? And do you still want it? When I was a child I wanted to become a neurosurgeon and at the same time make my own jewelry. Do I still want it? As a matter of fact, yes!
