Who is Ayesha Nasir? At this point in my life, I am a mom-preneur, a mommy blogger and a mommy journalist. The word mom is repeated multiple times in this sentence, just like it's repeated again and again in my life. For the longest, I refused to identify as a mom. Even when I was breast-feeding Keyaan, I insisted on thinking of myself as a journalist who could cover breaking news stories while juggling a newborn. I used to look down upon women who put their lives on hold and became full-time moms. And then in a mocking twist by nature, I became exactly that.

Tell us a little bit about your background. I was probably less than 15 years old when I began working for Young Nation as a reporter and writer. So began a life-long love affair with journalism. This affair took me down the brightly lit corridors at The Friday Times to the spacious and airy newsrooms of The News On Sunday. I went from covering conflicts on the Pak-Afghan borders to being caught in the midst of gunfire and bomb blasts in Quetta. For the BBC, I made multiple trips to the glittery redlight areas and narrated the stories of the disenfranchised. For Express News, I hunted out the people behind the
WITH
AYESHA NASIR headlines and made them the headlines. And I did all this while studying for various O-level exams, A levels, MBBS and later my Masters degree. What did you want to be when you grew up? I was super clear from a very early age. I wanted to become the Christiane Amanpour of the East. That dream has still not died. It still keeps me awake at night and I tell myself I am just biding my time before I emerge. Journalism is the first draft of history and history is made in moments of crisis. The idea of being privileged enough to be the writer of history's first draft still makes me giddy
with delight. Tell us three things we don't know about you. Most people put me down as an uber-confident and extrovert person but I am actually pretty shy. I had sworn to myself that I would never marry a Pakistani man because they don't understand strong women and then I ended up as the wife of a Pakistani Pathan man. I am a huge crier on sad movies How did Scaryammi come to life? I knew about mommy bloggers, like any mom who reads would. A few mommy bloggers in the West had really made it big and a part of me felt they had the best of both worlds: their mothering was providing the material and creative energy for their writing. In my past, I have identified myself as a feminist. A media woman. A reporter. A writer. An entrepreneur. To merge all this with being a mom and then announcing it to the world was an idea that I toyed with for a while. Till one day, I realized that journalism is about bringing news that matters to the people.
Why the name Scaryammi? A blog is different from any other news instrument. While most journalists are taught to stay objective and keep their opinions out of their work, a blog is about the story of the author. Since I knew Scaryammi would in some ways be my story, I wanted the name to reflect my mothering. For good or bad reasons, I have always identified as a tiger mom. Throughout my life, I have pushed myself and today I push my children - to explore, to invent, to learn. Scaryammi is a daisee take on the tiger mom. How has the response been? It has been unbelievable. I meet women every day who come and tell me
What was the inspiration behind this? The changing media scape of journalism intrigues and fascinates me. I love how journalism is truly becoming citizen journalism. I have for long wanted to launch a media instrument that will generate information, guidance, provide support and build a real community. This was the inspiration behind Scaryammi.
how it's the first group they check into every morning and the last place they check before sleeping. Conversations we have had on Scaryammi end up being carried into drawing room and into the principal's office. I love how Scaryammi is gradually becoming much bigger than me. What is the next step? There are so many many next steps. I have already launched Mommies Of Pakistan! I want to go to launch a youtube channel, maybe a magazine and so much more. Any message to our followers? Embrace what life has thrown at you and make the best of it. I never planned for my mothering and journalism to become so intricately linked but that's what happened.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? The idea of being a Chef in Pakistan did not settle quite well until ten years ago. My dream of pursuing this career was intact from a very young age but subdued by how the society might take it as a whole. Hence I started my Economics and Finance at Nottingham and soon realized that it wasn’t working for me. I came back to Pakistan with a dream of doing something but as I said there wasn’t much scope of being a chef hence I did my LLB. I must say that its pure luck that I got my first show with HUM TV as a chef and once that started I never looked back.
a p u g n i cook
STORM Young, dapper, internationally qualified host of the cooking show 'Flame on Hai' on Masala TV, over a short span of time, Basim Akhund has made a name for himself as one of the top chefs and food stylists in the food industry of Pakistan.

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE
2018
When did you first get into cooking? As far as I can recall I was very fascinated by how my grandmother and my mother used to cook and without fail every time they used to come up with something new. I was merely 11 years old when my mother bought a new electric fryer and that was the day my journey into the culinary field started. Seems quite funny but for a boy who was just 11 years old making French fries seemed like the biggest culinary achievement back in the day. This fryer made me gain some serious weight which was the drawback of such technology. If you had not chosen to become a chef, what alternate career path would you have opted for? If I wasn’t a chef, I would have continued working in the field of Law just like my family. Who has been your biggest influence? My Uncle, Rabel Akhund. I have always looke up to him even though our professions are different but I guess our commitment towards our goals are similar. He once told me, ‘do what you can control and success will follow.’ How would you describe your style of cooking? I would say I cook with love and complete devotion. We all are humans and we aren’t perfect. If I ever feel I cannot do justice to some ingredients, I wont indulge in that. This doesn’t mean I won’t try; I would only offer a recipe if I truly believe in it. Do you have a "signature dish" or a favorite dish you enjoy cooking? I love pasta and more over lasagna. Tradi-
ingredients. If you could invite 3 chefs over for dinner, who would they be and why? I would like to say this out loud; Chef Mehboob has taught me a lot. Hence he would be my first choice. Secondly, Massimo Bottura because he cooks for a cause. He represents his country Italy with his vision and cooking techniques. And Jamie Oliver because back in the day when England was still hooked to the traditional cooking shows he brought by a change by offering something new to the common man, easily available ingredients and delicious food that comes out of it.
tionally lasagna is made with beef and red sauce but I like to experiment and my version comprises of a slow cooked white sauce with fresh rosemary springs. People use cream but I prefer the reduction method which leads to a sweeter and a much creamier texture of the white sauce if the milk is reduced with love and care. What, would you say is the most exciting part of your job? I guess there are no limits when you speak of creativity in terms of the culinary world. I work better when there is pressure and this job is nothing but pressure and perfection. This keeps me going. Tell us about one life-changing meal you have had. Back in Culinary School I told my friend Joaquin Ginzo I don’t like sushi much. I surely know half of the people reading this will think of me as an imbecile. So, he being one of the upcoming star chefs in London took me to his restaurant LIMA and made me have Ceviche and I was blown away. The perfect blend of freshly deboned sole and this fresh lemon juice mixture called the Tigers Milk made this dish irresistible. What are your favorite local ingredients to work with? In terms of vegetables I prefer something that is available all around the year which leads me to conclude that tomatoes do wonders if used properly and if we speak about protein Pakistan has some great sea food to offer. I mean I am from Karachi and it would be foolish to live by the sea and not love the wonders it offers in terms of
Tell us about any challenges you have come across since you first started your career as a chef. It requires a lot of devotion, loyalty and relentless hard work when it comes to being a chef. Sadly, I must say in Pakistan people in general like cutting corners in every forum of life and this includes the food industry even. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Owning Pakistan’s most successful Food Solutions Company that offers every solution from food design to everything you can think of. Do you have any other passions or talents aside from cooking? Passion is something that comes from within, and apart from cooking I doubt anything can ever overshadow this. Is there any piece of advice you would like to give to an aspiring chef? As much as the Chef life sounds flamboyant, it isn’t. The culinary industry is cutthroat come what may. Behind the camera or in a professional kitchen, it’s a high-pressure job asking for your 100 percent even if it’s past 12am. If you want to succeed, be ready to burn the midnight oil and you can never back down even when you can’t move forward. The most difficult times shall shape you into a success story. 2018

saba burney Who’s your best friend? Definitely my mom.
STUDENT
What would you grab if your house were on fire? My phone and my cat. What is the destination for the trip of your dreams? South Africa! Always wanted to go there. When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up? And do you still want it? I wanted to be a teacher so bad! I would line my dolls up and teach them with chalkboards and everything. Definitely don't have the patience anymore! If you got stuck in the elevator and were forced to listen to only one song, which would it be? I love 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman, I could listen to it forever. What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? To treat others how you want to be treated - always helps put things in perspective for me!

ARIES (MAR. 21- APRIL 20) You could feel very confident this week and ready to take the world by storm. Even though chatty Mercury continues to rewind in your sector of travel and adventure, its ties with the sun and jovial Jupiter suggest you may have supreme faith in your abilities. This might encourage you to take a bold step forward and try things you were too nervous to try before. It might help to have some practical friends on hand who can give you some down-toearth advice, though. TAURUS (APR. 21- MAY 21) You could experience some good fortune this week as the result of a windfall or other delightful gift. It might not be a huge amount, but it’s a signal that you’re open to the flow and to receiving from the universe. If you continue to release any deep-seated emotions that are blocking your energy and stay ready to resolve issues that have held you back, the flow can increase. And it’s not just more money that could come your way but also more love and other good things. It seems you’re on a roll. GEMINI (MAY 22-JUNE 21) The people you know could seem larger than life and almost caricatures of themselves as a very confident blend of energies encourages them to be completely at ease. They may be less inhibited and more willing to be exactly as they are, no matter what you or others think. And it could be contagious. The more you interact with them, the more you could feel your confidence increase, too. Socializing can be extremely good for you, bringing wonderful opportunities and support should you need it. CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 22) The coming week could be particularly upbeat for you because an opportunity you’ve always wanted could come your way. This time, you’ll feel more than ready to embrace it, and because of this you’ll be more likely to make a success of it. However, with thoughtful Mercury continuing its retrograde phase in this zone, things may not go exactly as planned. You need to be flexible in case of unexpected changes. These could work in your favor if you don’t resist them, however.
SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) The coming week could coincide with a lucky break and perhaps a small windfall, financial gift, or something else that fills your heart with pleasure. If you have a business, you might earn more profits than usual or be offered a chance to do so. This may be due to your generous attitude toward others and your willingness to give without any thought of return. This is simply your kindness and good karma coming back to you. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 23 -DEC. 21) You could feel so extremely confident and optimistic that nothing fazes you. You will try whatever you set your heart on doing, even if you have to scale the highest mountain or swim the deepest sea. At least that’s what you think. When it comes to reality, it might not go quite as planned. However, just lowering your expectations a notch or two can enable you to accomplish much more. CAPRICORN (DEC 22.- JAN. 20) There are some very upbeat energies in your spiritual sector, so you might like to spend time at a retreat where you can meditate and contemplate life and the world. With the sun in this sector along with philosophical Jupiter and restless Mercury, you deserve this time to yourself in order to unwind and recharge. AQUARIUS (JAN. 21.- FEB. 19) Your social circle, good friends, and even those you connect with on social media can be a force for good in your life. There could be much positive energy coming to you from people who really appreciate your company and enjoy having you around. PISCES (FEB. 20-MAR. 20) You could enjoy some serious recognition this week. A very upbeat blend of energies suggests that others could promote you without you even asking. Perhaps something you post on social media goes viral and you become an overnight Internet sensation. Or it could be a matter of a mention that nets you a lucrative offer or fabulous opportunity.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG 22) Your tendency could be to think big this week, and you might be willing to take on a challenge that you avoided before. There could be a desire to experience new ideas, philosophies, and places that offer something different. You might be seeking a new way to interact with life, and travel can be one option that offers a different perspective. New sights, sounds, places, and faces can all fascinate and give you much food for thought. VIRGO (AUG. 23 -SEPT. 23) There seems to be a lot of positive activity taking place within the family. A very upbeat blend of energies could bring everyone together for a celebration or simply to spend time enjoyably in each other’s company. There could be some good news or perhaps an opportunity that makes life better for everyone. The upshot is that a big shift toward the positive could leave everyone feeling much happier and looking forward to the future. LIBRA (SEPT. 24 -OCT. 23) You could find the coming week to be one of the most positive for quite some time. A very optimistic blend of energies makes this is a great opportunity for networking, learning a new skill, attending interviews, and generally promoting yourself.
