Being a graduate from NCA, how did MyArtWorld come around?

I moved back from Lahore and displayed my work at Taseer Gallery. They gave us the freedom to curate our work and that’s where I discovered my interest in the field. I started working on the concept of MyArtWorld with the founder and due to the fact that I'd recently graduated from NCA I had access

to all the fresh graduates as well as my seniors.

How would you describe your approach to curating?

I usually curate concept or theme based shows. For example, my show 2 X 2 at the Netherlands embassy had work by 25 artists who were asked to work in any medium and concept they were

more inclined to. What bound them together was the uniformity in size.

The collection came together as a wider narrative covering various concepts. Juxtaposed Feminity was another show that I recently curated that was purely based on the concept of how femininity is perceived.

Do you visit a lot of exhibitions to inspire yourself

and become familiar with new curatorial practices?

Yes I do and I love visiting galleries and museums even while I'm travelling. I am always current on the local as well as international art scene thanks to the internet as well!

How has the response to your online art gallery been?

Things have really changed in the last 5 years. Buying art online was an alien concept to most seasoned collectors initially but due to the consistency and quality of our work, we are now making art accessible to art collectors in Pakistan as well as internationally.

Explain how you negotiate a loan or purchase terms. What planning goes into that process?

The gallery showcases art on a commission model .We do not purchase directly.

What kind of art personally intrigues you?

I personally lean towards contemporary art. I can appreciate traditional art but what really evokes emotions in me is contemporary art.From hyper-reaist art to contemporary miniatures to abstract art.

How do you handle the situation when you have the feeling that the work of an artist is not going to be as strong?

I work with the artist closely for 8-10 months before the show while the work is in progress. We keep discussing the work and I keep seeing it through the process. That doesn't really leave any room for last minute surprises.

What do you think are the differences between artists and curators? Do they share the same theoretical background?

They do share the same theoretical background. Artists usually want to concentrate more on their creative process.

That is why they showcase at galleries who can in turn curate their work and manage their sales etc. Curators also have a similar art background but also have to have a good understanding of writing about the art, working on concepts that bind artists together for a show.

How does your interaction with an artist evolve from your initial encounter with their work, to studio visit, and then to the realization of an exhibition?

It’s a journey and I feel like both the parties create a bond that helps create the overall experience which is the curated art exhibition. The synergy is usually reflected through the quality of the show and the connection that you feel once you're in front of the piece.

Describe your experience with researching pieces?

I keep some time every day for research. It is important to keep reading and researching in order to grow and to be able to analyze art and understand it at a deeper level.

When planning a display, what tasks do you handle? What do you delegate?

I'm very particular when it comes to my work so I don't really let anyone meddle in the process. The only work that I do delegate is instructing my team on how to hang the work or making tags for the work. I work on the catalogue, the curation of the art and connect it to art lovers, collectors and the press. I also post regularly online on instagram,facebook & twitter inorder for the work to reach a wider audience.

What advice would you give to freshly graduated budding artists?

Be consistent, be humble and do your best!

What is the story behind Everthine. How it came into being?

Everthine is a line from Beethoven's letter "Immortal beloved" addressed to his love where he ends the poem with 'Ever thine, ever mine, ever ours.' Similarly, this reflects my love for designing and creating art and textures. It is ever yours and forever mine.

What is the inspiration behind the brand?

I was always intrigued by distinct fascination in the realm of style since most of my family were into the clothing business. I've learnt to absorb from the exposure around me and gradually honed my designing art in fashion.

What is your biggest challenge with brides these days?

Brides lately seek perfection just like a Cinderella's wedding. But nothing comes easy and indeed brides go through tribulations from financial budget to getting the best bridal gown in a period of just a couple of months which can be really adverse.

What do you love most about being a designer?

Each time I design I fall in love with the whole essence of fashion. How one outfit can be altered into countless styles. It’s truly an art to take a piece of cloth and turn it into your next exclusive piece of work.

Tell us about your team?

I'm the work force and creative brain behind the primary art work of designing where Jamal Khursheed often assists me with the updates on the current trends and whats in and not.

Furthermore, Shahzad is the backbone behind all the marketing and financial strategies of bringing the brand from 2018

Describe a day in your life?

Indeed, its not a piece of cake. It takes hard work and sheer determination and especially the absolute belief in one's self. I spend a lot of time with my team deciding on the perfect quality of fabric, getting those stitched in due time and keeping up with the trends of every season.

When time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

I remember, the first time I launched my brand a year ago and it was not as shinny and successful as it is now. I've hit the rocky path a lot of times and I barely reached the margin for profits. It got really restless but I reminded myself, this is how far I've come and I refuse to just throw in the white towel and call it quits.

What are the color trends for 2018 according to you?

I'd say keep the modern gradients neutral from pastels to practical metallic and nudes.

Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?

Without a second thought, my family of high achievers. The sheer determination they've showed me when it comes to work ethic is impeccable. They've inspired me to learn about the patience we have to develop and the stamina we have to maintain to just keep striving for betterment.

As an experienced fashion designer what tips would you like to give the emerging fashion designers?

Rule # 1, always believe in your capabilities and aim for the sky.

There is no limit when it comes to achievement. Allow yourself to be inspired, make mistakes but learn and don't refrain yourself from standing out in the crowd. It takes originals to be the best.
