Dance first, think later ZAHSHANNE ZEHRA MALIK IS A TRAINED DANCER AND CHOREOGRAPHER, WHO HAS BEEN LEARNING HOW TO DANCE SINCE SHE WAS FOUR YEARS OLD. SHE TRIED HER LUCK AT MANAGING SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS FOR CERTAIN BRANDS, ONLY TO REALIZE THAT FIELD WASN’T FOR HER. SHE HAD ALWAYS BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT DANCING AND DECIDED TO GIVE IT HER ALL. NOW SHE SPENDS ALL HER TIME TEACHING AND CHOREOGRAPHING NEW STEPS TO ADULTS AND CHILDREN ALIKE.

Did you stumble upon your career, or was it something that you always wanted?

It is definitely something I have wanted for as long as I can remember. I started taking dance classes at the age of 4, and performed for the first time on stage at 6. Since then I always knew that the stage was where I felt most at home, and I wanted to be a performer.

I have, it’s to dance on tour for an artist like JLO or Beyoncé!

What was your “aha!” moment?

My “aha!” moment occurs every time I hear a new song that I can connect to, or when I’m rewatching my videos for the tenth time, while choreographing a dance.

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

My mother. She truly believes in the work she does and always follows her gut.

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

Yes, the first year out of university was probably the most confusing time in my life. As “adulthood” kicked in and the missguided mindset we have about Performing Arts, as a long term career choice, led me to take up various social media marketing jobs. Luckily it didn’t take me that long to find my way back.

When was a time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

I think the most discouraged I felt was during university when a professor I looked up to told me that I had a better chance of becoming a choreographer, than working as a dancer.

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

I think the best advice anyone can give is that there is only one you, and you have something to offer that nobody else can. stand for.

What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

It takes a lot of self-motivation, and you have to hold yourself accountable for each and every step.

"I CONSTANTLY STRUGGLE WITH HAVING TO CONVERSE WITH PEOPLE ABOUT MY PROFESSION AS THEY OFTEN CAN’T WRAP THEIR HEADS AROUND IT. THE WAY I PUSH THROUGH IS BY KNOWING THAT THE ONLY PERSON I HAVE TO ANSWER TO, IS MYSELF, AND I WORK EVERY DAY TO BE BETTER THAN I WAS YESTERDAY."

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

My family, my friends and my health.

What is the one thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

I don’t usually make lists. However, if there is one dream

Describe a day in your life.

I teach yoga and dance at different schools so I spend my mornings with kids. In the evenings, I usually spend time choreographing and rehearsing for my next class, video or show. As a dancer giving your body time off is equally as important as the 30 hours of practice during the week. On those days I spend my time painting, or with friends and Sundays at the beach.

Someone who goes after what she believes in.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

I learnt to be less dependant on others, and have fewer expectations. I rely on myself and have to pick myself up each time I fall (literally), but this keeps me motivated.

Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with?

Benazir Bhutto, if she were alive - I mean she really was a #bosslady.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Please don’t let people around discourage you from being who you are and doing what you love.
