Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted to do?

Mustang-Productions is something that I thought about, crafted and set a plan of action to create. It has been a labor of love and immense handwork, considering the industry we work in is quite competitive. .

What was your ‘aha’ moment?

I believe that in life, everyday is an aha moment. What was mine?

Way too many moments I guess, everyday you learn something new, extraordinary and you’re surprised, you see things differently, there are times when you’re like aha that's nice or aha!!

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

Well I have already undergone a career change, before I came into fashion, I was heading the international department for my families business, I was travelling, attending conferences and was overall submerged as I grew into this business. To be honest, my career only took a shift after I got married and moved to London, where I had a baby after a year. It was a struggle to leave my baby boy at home alone. And that’s when it hit me, If I have my own business I could balance my worlds, in terms of my children and my work.

When was the time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

There was a time, where I felt an unhealthy obsession building up that was directed towards me and by far was one of the most discouraging instances. If I didn’t have set-backs I wouldn't be where I am today, if you get discouraged, give yourself a pep talk and make yourself stronger and resilient.

The one thing that is yet to be ticked off of your bucket list?

I try to live my life via spontaneity. If I get the opportunity now, I’ll take it so as long as it feels right. With the millions of things that I wish to do, I will, but when the time is right.

What does nobody tell you about being a boss?

That no matter who makes the mistake in the chain of command, at the end of the day, it will be your mistake. There is a sense of responsibility that you need to carry on your shoulders at all times.

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

Respect talent and hard work, every time I have the pleasure of being in the presence of a successful woman, for me that’s a learning curve. My friend, Farzana, one of the top PR consultant in London, I’ve never seen a woman work as hard as her, in her company, I’m amazed and inspired

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

Having lost my father at a very young age, I’ve never had a physical mentor, someone I could reach out to for advice. However based on the desire of having one I took a trip into W.H.Smith a bookstore in London, where I found a book by Anthony Robins, his work, plainly speaking, put things I already knew into perspective and I consider him a life coach.

Top 3 things you cherish in your life?

My children, number one, I’d be a vacuum without them, they simply complete me. My health, this year my younger sister was sadly diagnosed with cancer, she’s been going through treatment and it’s been a very difficult time for her and the entire family and heartbreaking. Further more love, it’s superiority over all other emotions, to receive and to provide, from all sorts of relationships, be it with your spouse, your.

Describe a day in your life?

My work is my passion, I’ve immersed myself in it, which is why I rely on my spontaneity, if I’m working, I sleep, eat, breathe work, however if I’m not working I’m home, I’m a regular mom, doing homie things, with the family, spending time with the kids, taking care of their pick and drops, chilling etc To me a #bosslady is ….

A woman who knows her mind and understands who she is, someone who is secure as a person and doesn’t let external opinions sway her.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

I learnt from trial and error, I wouldn’t necessarily classify it as failure. You need to realize who your well wishers are and who you just can’t trust, call it a negative vibe, aura or even a gut feeling, trust it, and delete that person out of your life.

Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with?

I think I would like to have dinner with Putin, I feel there are many layers to his personality and dining would be intriguing.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Having a mentor is important; if you have one, learn from them. I did not have one, which is why I realize the importance. Because of social media, teenagers are more insecure than ever before. Just walk tall, walk proud and believe in yourself, it doesn’t matter if you fail, you learn from your mistakes.

What is Irfan Hasan’s way of life?

I have never imagined my life without art. If I have a choice I would spend my life in my studio. That’s the place that keeps me sane, positive and productive.

Describe yourself in three words?

Observant, Consistent, Restless What traits are needed to make such meticulous works?

I can’t just let go matters in my life and work. I know if I ignore anything it will have a boomerang effect. I try my best to fix the problem first or leave it if it’s not worth it. If I specifically talk about my work I love developing and nurturing it dot to dot, line-to-line and space-to-space. It’s like constantly assessing and questioning your abilities. It’s a tough and painful process but I enjoy it. You need some seriousness, passion and ability to sacrifice yourself to create a piece of art.

Who are your greatest inspirations and influences?

It’s so difficult to acknowledge my inspirations and influences because they change time to time to be very honest. But I want to mention a few names that took my thought process and creativity to another level. Picasso, Manto, Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Rembrandt, Orhan Pamuk, Ganesh Pyne, Mother Teresa and my father.

What are the most challenging steps to make it to the art world?

There are so many challenges one faces to make it to the art world at every stage. First is the lack of support from parents and society especially for boys in Pakistan. Even though we had artists and writers in my family but it took time for my parents to accept the importance of art education. After your formal art education, it is quite challenging to continue the practice and to have faith in it. It takes time to get a show. When you are established as an artist then its also challenging to maintain your practice and in our culture, there are very few channels that liberate artists in Pakistan. Like the myself, there must have been huge number of artists and thinkers who went through the drills of criticism.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Everyone wants to see him or herself in a better position in the future. I would hope to see myself on a much bigger international platform.

What are the five people dead or alive you would want to sit down and have a dinner with?

Saadat Hassan Manto, Pablo Picasso, Damien Hirst, Madam Noor Jahan and all the members of Pink Floyd.

What art piece would you love to own and why?

I would love to own Nymphs and Satyr by William Adolphe Bouguereau. I am so fortunate that I was able to witness this painting in a museum in Massachusetts in 2010. I still remember I had goose bumps and my eyes were wet. The only question in my head was that how somebody could give life to a canvas. I would love to own every work of his. In fact I did a series of works dedicated to him. I have never met him but he taught me.

How do you combine photography and painting?

Photography has always been the part of my paintings. I always take photographs of my subjects and models as references. In one series of work I combined both. I made the painting first and then projected the image of painting with the help of multimedia projector and took photographs. I also did an animation with the various images of my paintings.

Your favorite destination?

New York City.

Your next upcoming project?

I have a two-person show coming up at Chowkandi Gallery Karachi with Syed Hussain.

What changes do you feel about the Pakistan art scene today as opposed to when started your career?

I think when our generation of artists started our career there was just a handful of galleries and collectors in Pakistan but now things have really changed in a positive way. Art business wasn’t that efficient in Pakistan but now it is. I think social media has also played a very positive role.
