SALT BY IDEAS » We loved your performance in JPNA2?

Was it easy to go back to playing the pashto character? How was the first day on shoot?

The character Gul was inspired by another phastoon character that I played in a telefilm by Nadeem Baig “Raja and Raani”starring me and Hamza Ali Abbasi. A telefilm is for a short amount of time but playing in a movie as a Pashtoon comic girl wasn’t really my cup of tea. However, Nadeem and Hamayun convinced me to do it for JPNA1 and it was really liked by the audience however, coming back to it for JPNA2 wasn’t easy. I haven’t done this character in a while, but since it was a sequel it was quite given that I had to do it. When I landed in turkey for the shoot of JPNA2 and we decided my look and outfits, I took some time alone at night to rehearse my role so I know my position on set but I just couldn’t get through the accent and I got so frustrated that I rested my head on a wall and asked Allah to just let me through it. And then I spoke to myself and boosted my confidence that I can do it and tried again. The next day at set I was really upset because I couldn’t do the accent properly and I was stuck, I had teary eyes and I told Nadeem that I just can’t do it. He made me calm down and told me that I just need to focus on my acting, the accent can be fixed in the dubbing part of the film, that built my courage and scene after scene I got better. It was challenging but totally worth it! » Your TV serial Khasara has bagged high ratings and people have appreciated the character of Linta? Tell us more about how you worked on this role?

I’m very picky and choosy about my projects because I feel whatever I’m doing as a character has to fit right.

For Khasara my friend, Mehreen Sonya who’s also the project head for Sana’s production house convinced me to do it. Initially the character of Linta came as a negative role to me, it was charming and rich but I wasn’t fully convinced so I spoke to the writer, Maham Malik and suggested that there should be more layers in the personality of the character which she figured out and the role worked for me. However, I Enjoyed the fact that the I got to wear amazing clothes by Deepak Perwani which were perfect for my role. Furthermore, the way

Linta talks had to be very calm and pleasant normally in life I talk very fast but for while acting I had to slow down my pace and tone. To be really honest I think I have learned a lot by playing the role Linta, the way she handles a situation, the way to react to a certain situation and a lot more. Linta is one of my favourite characters I’ve played so far and I think people loved her too. » How is it working with Mikaal Zulfiqar!

You have done various projects with him?

How is it on the sets?

Mikaal is amazing to work with. Yes, I have done quite a few plays with him and every time he’s on set he takes care of his co-actors pampers them and of course most importantly we do a lot of camera rehearsals and script readings. I really admire the fact that he wants rest of the actors to be on the same page as him. He would treat the co stars with juices and ice cream every time .

I think that’s a rare commodity and in my 13 years of working nobody has really done that. The only issue I have with Mikaal is that he’s extremely busy, if a project has to end in three days it will spread out to months otherwise It's a pleasure working with him. » Being the face of Special Olympics in Pakistan, what are your responsibilities?

As the brand ambassador of special Olympics, I have to attend events to represent these kids on different forums and platforms. I thought we didn’t have a national song for these kids like every country has one for special kids so I researched and we got into a lot of talks and spoke to a lot of people and then we ended up having Anwar Maqsood Saab to write a song for us and Strings to sing it. The song is ready and we’re in the process of the video. Umar Adil and Beenish are the directors who will be making the video. This is going to be the first Pakistani National song for special kids and we are very excited. I want to take these kids to all platforms and show the world how much potential we have in our country. These are the real super heroes and the real celebrities who bring so many medals, respect, recognition and appreciation for Pakistan on international level.

Hopefully the next games are happening in March in Abu Dhabi and I’ll be going to represent Pakistan with these kids, coaches and their families. Can't control my

» You have been working in the industry over a decade? Which are your favourite roles played and why A lot of characters I have done have been my favourite so just to name a few for this would be Haania in Matae-Jaan, Linta in Khasara , Zoya in Dil-e-Muztar, Alizay in Ishq gumshada and Gul in JPNA, I enjoyed acting them thoroughly. I also liked dubbing in 3 Bahadur for Saadi's mum as it was my first time doing an animated film, i thoroughly enjoyed it. » Do you think directors play a big part in tapping the best out of your talent?

Who’s your favourite?

Yes, I feel directors play a very important role in manufacturing the play while, the artist himself is the sole reason and sole manufacture of the character. It's really important for the director to know what they want from an actor and what they would like the actor to bring to the table. A good director is somebody who does give you the leverage to perform and at the same time tunes you a little. Like Mehreen Jabbar would tell me to talk naturally and not take too much time on screen and breaks and emphasis on different wordings. Ehsam Hussain works a lot on details and I love that about him.

Nadeem Baig is a total institution of entertainment and he knows how to entertain the audience weather its a sad scene or a funny scene he knows what he wants from the actor and he makes sure to bring that out from the actor. Shehrezad Sheikh is also a new and upcoming director and is also all about details. Even Mehreen Jabbar, her school of thought is pretty much the same, she was highly professional - we had quite a few issues on set but she would make sure that her team and specially the artists would be treated properly and not stress out. Therefore, the director is the captain of the ship no matter what is happening on the set they have to make sure that the actor himself is in the scene and is up with the emotion. » How do you cope up with the new social media challenges as when you started, all this didn’t exist? Do you feel

the pressure to post something or tweet something everyday or post fashion pictures?

Yes, the pressure is too much. I was never into social media like posting pictures on Facebook and now Instagram. When i started the acting career these things didn’t exist. So you know a few people in the industry pressurised me to make my Instagram page and just a year ago I made one. Yes, you do get a lot of followers and interact with your fans. At the same time it’s just too much, I’m just not a sort of the person that gets ready everyday and poses for a picture but whenever I go to an event or if I’m wearing a designer clothes they want their pictures to be posted so I mean it has it’s pros and cons. It does pressurise actors specially actors like me who are very camera shy. I don’t know how to pose and I don’t know my angles but at the same time I have to work around it. It does give you a lot of stress as it’s almost like a job that you don’t do by choice (at least for me) I don’t do it by choice, I do it out of stress. For me social media works as far as awareness is concerned as long as I’m talking about my special kids or NGO’s or an awareness campaign I feel that it’s a very good platform but I’m an introvert so I’m not all for it at the same time. » Favourite holiday destination

Also Asim’s Cake - it was a brilliant movie, I read the script and it was a page turner, I like the fact that he didn’t have a channels support and still the movie did so well. I really hope other producers and directors who want to make independent films come up and get encouraged by films like Cake.
