ART IN MOTION Alaina Roy is a professional classical Kathak dancer who has been trained under the artistic guidance of Guru Pali Chandra in dubai for ten years.

2018

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? I’d say both. I was 8 years old when I first started learning Kathak in Dubai. At that point, it was just a hobby. Soon after, it became a passion. What was your “aha!” moment? December 2015 when I first went to Lucknow for intense training with a wide variety of Gurus. My exposure to dance changed and the realisation that this could be a life long journey for me arose.

That it takes patience, perseverance and discipline. But then I think these are things that you really only learn on the job! Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you? My mother. I’m inspired by her constantly; by her drive, her passion for what she believes in, her success and her strength.

Describe a day in your life. My days differ on whether I am in Karachi or London. |IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Why did you decide to become a model? It became my passion once I went to a quiz show representing my school and ended up on the kid’s magazine cover. Who has been your biggest inspiration and why? My mother is my biggest inspiration, hands down! She has always been so independent and confident, so I think I’ve learned that from her. She has also shown me a lot of support which is why I believe that I am what I am today because of her. Tell us about a time when you had to deal with an obsessive fan. What was to deal with an obsessive fan? What was the situation and how did you react? This is actually one crazy story! I usually try to interact with my fans through social media. So, there was a guy who started acting strangely obsessive and started messaging me everywhere. He even proposed to me and initially I took it lightly but at the end he started harassing me by saying he is going to cast a spell on me. He told me that he knew my mother’s name and my residential address, which freaked me out! Anyway, I ended up blocking him from all social media platforms but it was actually terrifying.

behind the supermodel

alyzeh gabol Shes not only a model, shes a mother, an actress and a beautiful soul inside out.

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2018

What is the funniest question that you have ever been asked in interview? I was asked if I got married secretly in Abu Dhabi which was absolutely ridiculous. If you weren’t a model, what would you be doing right now? I would be studying to be an astronaut, for sure. Which supermodel do you look up to and why? Cindy Crawford! She is amazing in every way.

What is your creative process before you take over the runway? The first thing I do is take a deep breath and pray. I only focus on the cameras in front of me and not on the audience. What’s your motto or the advice you live by? Live and let live. What is your favorite song to belt out at in the car? Current favorite is Har Maiden Fatey from the movie ‘Sanju’. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I write! I love to pen down my thoughts. Who has been your mentor in this industry and what would you like to say to them today? Guddu & Shani! I started with them and they are more like family now. I would just like to thank them for having trust and faith in me and I would always want the best for them. Ten years from now you will be… I am young and I still have a long way to go. Sky is the limit for me, so I will take whatever life has to throw at me and make the best of it.

ARIES (MAR. 21- APRIL 20) The curious thing about this Mercury retrograde is how it managed to stir up old flames from the past, even fantasy flirtations that no one knew about. Plans for vacations and creative projects will start to take shape. It is a lovely placement to promote all your relationships. Throughout all this, remember that you still stand to benefit from the wealth and resources of others, which means you can get a loan or a mortgage, and your partner might get a raise or a bonus. Yeah! TAURUS (APR. 21- MAY 21) Many events related to home, family and your private life will finally culminate at the end of this week. In fact, when it "stops," it stays at the same degree for about six days. At that point, everything to do with home, family and your private life will be kick started in a new direction. Yeehaw! Finally! GEMINI (MAY 22-JUNE 21) The retrograde motion of these four planets affects you because one of these planets is your ruler! It's made you think you're losing it - but you're not. Mixed-up communications, misplaced items, confusion and delays, as well as transportation problems have been the name of the game for weeks now, and finally, by Saturday, this will stop. CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 22) You are hearing from friends, partners and ex-spouses you have not talked to for a while. Some of you are once again forced to deal with something that annoyed or troubled you. Cheques in the mail will be late. However, this is a good time to wrap up old financial matters and discussions about wages. Meanwhile, enjoy entertaining at home as well as redecorating and making your digs look more attractive. Real-estate deals could be profitable. LEO (JULY 23-AUG 22) This dreadful Mercury retrograde is over at the end of this week. Thank gawd! Admittedly, we will be in the shadow of Mercury retrograde because Mercury first went retrograde at 24 degrees in Leo, and it will not catch up to 24 degrees in Leo until September 19. So we are not truly in the clear until then. But I assure you, once its "backwards" motion stops on Saturday, all the insanity in your life will get immeasurably better. This is a lovely week to schmooze and enjoy the company of others. Be good to yourself! (Send out for dark chocolate.) VIRGO (AUG. 23 -SEPT. 23) Lots of unusual, even weird stuff is going on lately. Primarily, this is due to the fact that four planets are retrograde. Difficulties and challenges with kids, vacation plans and old flames are part of the picture. On the upside, you might be able to explore previous chances to get training and education or a previous opportunity to travel. This time it looks viable. You win some, you lose some. Enjoy spending money on beautiful goodies this week. Some of you will earn more as well. LIBRA (SEPT. 24 -OCT. 23) With your ruler Venus in your sign now, you continue to be diplomatic and charming. This might bring unexpected changes to negotiations regarding inheritances, shared property, taxes, debt and insurance issues. Think about your future goals. Focus on immediate, short-term objectives. (It can be mind-boggling to think too far down the road.)

SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) Your everyday world has been in turmoil for some time now because of retrograde Mars and retrograde Saturn. And this turmoil has not been casual! Oh no. It came into your life because of major events that you could not avoid and were forced to deal with. Be grateful for this. Something surprising and unexpected will bring a change to your partnerships. All of this sets the tone for job changes and possible residential moves in the future. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 23 -DEC. 21) Your urge to travel and get outta Dodge is still strong! Fortunately, some can use this influence to finish ongoing projects. Friendships are warm, especially with creative, artistic people. Serious issues have recently created hiccups to your earnings and your assets. This has been something you had to face - but it was no fun. Fear not because good things are waiting for you in November when lucky Jupiter enters your sign for the first time in 12 years. They say, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." CAPRICORN (DEC 22.- JAN. 20) "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right" -- encapsulates what you've been feeling because there's been no escape from frustrations. This gives you the feeling that life is two steps forward, and one step back. Old business regarding inheritances, shared property and insurance issues is still dragging on, but at least, getting completed. Actually, some of this confusion is because you are heading in a new direction. Henry Adams said, "One friend in a life is much, two are many, three are hardly possible." AQUARIUS (JAN. 21.- FEB. 19) This might stir things up creating unpredictable situations at home, within your family and also regarding real estate. Other areas that are a bit tenuous and unpredictable are hidden. People are not aware of what is going on. You will continue to enjoy good fortune and chances to promote your good name because lucky Jupiter is still shining down on you from the top of your chart. Yay you! PISCES (FEB. 20-MAR. 20) Your work routine has been erratic since July. This has been discouraging for many of you. Fear not because by September, things will return to normal and you will feel once again feel a reliable rhythm in your job and your everyday tasks. Meanwhile, some unexpected events have impacted friendships or your interaction with a group. Possible dissension or competition might be a challenge. Instead focus on opportunities that do exist for travel, further education plus exploring avenues in publishing, the media, medicine and the law. Think how you can work in these areas to your advantage because this is where your opportunities are.
