In conversation with Bayaan- Pepsi Battle of the Bands Season 3

P

epsi Battle of the Bands Season 3 has certainly kicked off with a bang this year as it showcases musical talent from all over the country on a larger scale than ever before. The auditions brought forth a wide array of bands who tried their luck in becoming the next big thing in the Pakistani music industry.

However through this siphoning process, veteran judges Fawad Khan, Meesha Shafi and Farooq Ahmed chose what were to them the best of the lot for the Top 8. Amongst many notable performances, one band stood out for their mature sound and originality which captivated the judges and audience alike. They are Bayaan. We caught up with these fine young men to talk about their musical journeys, experiences on the show and what the future holds for them.

Bayaan consists of soulful Asfar Hussain on vocals, Shahrukh Aslam and Muqueet Shahzad on guitars, Haider Abbas grooving on the bass and Mansoor Lashari working the drums. Firstly we asked each member to describe themselves and that helped us determine how each member saw each other under a different light. Asfar described Mansoor as the “balanced genius” whereas Mansoor chose to describe the band as a whole calling themselves “Feeling full crazy individuals with tasteless humor but truly a gang of brothers”.

This chemistry surely reflected on their stage performances where they proved to be a tight lot and right in the pocket.

We proceeded to ask the band on how Bayaan came to be to which Haider responded “I started playing the keyboard at a very early age.

Through formative school years, I picked up the guitar and started playing with a couple of friends. When things got a bit in place, I formed my first band in college with Muqueet and took up the bass guitar. Soon afterwards, I met Asfar, Mansoor and Shahrukh during recordings for a TV show and we developed a cozy musical bond. Soon after the show ended, we decided to enter a studio and record our first track, Nahein Milta.

That’s how Bayaan was formed.”

We were also amazed to learn how varied the band’s influences were, ranging from Junoon to progressive rock legends like Porcupine Tree and Opeth to film score geniuses like Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL. This truly gave us an insight into the diversity and progressive nature of their sound.

They performed their progressive pop original “Farda” as their entry for the audition for Pepsi Battle of the Bands Season 3 which was well received by the judges and earned them a spot in the Top 8. We asked the band how they felt getting such a positive feedback on an original number, to which Shahrukh stated “We were super pleased with the positive feedback we got and being part of the Top 8 was incredibly exciting. It was mostly a mix of “YES” and this is going to be a lot of work”.

Despite a strong performance in the auditions, Bayaan faced a tough time in the Top 8 where their performance could not make the desired impact on the judges. This led to their relegation to the bottom 3 in that round. They performed a progressive rock infused

version of Hadiqa Kiani’s “Inteha-e-Shauq” which had an experimental vibe which could not impress the judges who criticized the band for their song choice. When asked about this performance Muqueet claimed “Honestly, that criticism came to us like a bullet train. We had jammed the song quite well and that cover came about quite organically. We knew the risks, as identified by the judges, going into the song but we enjoyed playing it and were really excited for the judges and the audience to hear our rendition. We didn’t expect our risks to materialize as strongly as they did and the judges clearly put it out there – there is no room for risks to materialize in this competition. After the criticism, we definitely had hope for redemption because we were confident about the song we were going to do in the danger zone.”

The band once again showed their originality and command over their music by performing their stellar original titled “Hum Nadaan” which reminded the judges of why they selected this band in the first place.

Commenting on this turn of events, Asfar passionately stated “We as a band believe that we are better at creating original songs rather than doing covers. Our originals have to be meaningful. We keep the lyrical content on high priority along with the melodies, harmonies, instrumentation and arrangement of the song. We let our songs flow in a natural manner and lead to their creation.

We have the end goal in our minds but the process is not in our control entirely, it has to take its own course and our song writing process keeps evolving with each creation.

“Hum Nadaan” is not just a message that people would listen and forget; rather we wanted it to change people’s perspectives about this psychologically driven reality that has become the absolute reality for most of us.

I believe it’s the sincerity of our intentions that saved us.”

there and share it with the world. Winning or losing the show does not matter to us as much as staying in it till the end does. That way, our voice will reach millions of people and the prospect of people getting inspired by our music increases. Even after the show, we will continue making music the way we were before. I see Bayaan going down in the pages of history and an iconic Pakistani band that gave the audience something pure, true and meaningful. Something substantial that helps people to connect to their inner true selves and the world around them.

Music which did create a difference.”

Seeing the attitude, passion and direction of these young lads towards their music has prompted us to believe that Bayaan will indeed go a long way to fulfill their musical destiny.

Seeing such conviction and passion from young musicians these days, who focus more on their originality and content rather than mere showmanship is a truly rare find. The band further went on to describe their sound as a mix of pop-rock with dark progressive elements and embellishments.

Concluding our talk with the band we had to ask what the future held for Bayaan and how did they see themselves progressing beyond the Top 6 and what awaits them in the near future to which Mansoor started off by saying “We're going to be cautiously confident! Although we've prepared rigorously for the battle, we must keep in mind that the competition is immense this season. We're sharing the stage with some amazingly talented bands.”

Asfar further added “We aim to go till the last round of this competition because we want the world to hear us as much as possible and Pepsi Battle of the Bands provides a huge platform to bring our music out 2018

“TEDxLahore is the first licensed TED event in Pakistan that has been going strong for the last nine years,” says Nuzhat Saadia Siddiqi, a core team member, “In 2010; I was the co-curator of the biggest TEDxLahore event that was originally curated by Asim Fayyaz, an enterprising student of LUMS who brought the idea to Pakistan. From there, it has grown from strength to strength under the new energy and zeal of Irteza Ubaid and a new team, which includes some of us of the old guard as well. Just like the original team, the new team

eld at Ali Auditorium on the 29th of July, Pakistan’s oldest TEDx platform, TEDxLahore - now in its ninth year - hosted its popular, annual event to an audience of over 400 individuals, some of whom had driven in from outside the city.

“We always aspire to give our audience an experience which sparks discussions and meaningful conversations,” stated Irteza Ubaid, the curator of the platform, “A lot of these subjects affect us directly or indirectly, but since we’re so engrossed in our little bubbles, we fail to talk about them, and hence, fail to be proactive. This must change.”

“Our team has gone beyond the curation of a conference to the curation of a community around these conferences. This is an ecosystem for

has been cognizant of the Pakistani socio-cultural scene, keeping abreast of the innovations and changes brought about technology, education and new design practices, which is the hallmark of a TED event.”

“My hope from events such as TEDxLahore is that it always remains an outlet for curious souls to experience, question and connect with ideas that excite them,” stated Areej Mehdi, who led the speaker curation team for the event, “TEDx events provide us an opportunity to explore multi-faceted narratives, an important step towards an open and diverse society.”

Abid Omar TEDxLahore put together an inspiring panel of speakers who are change makers in our society. The speakers talked about events that have an impact today, such as preserving Lahore’s heritage through painting, bringing justice to the common man, or Pakistan’s pollution problem, events like these expand the conversation that go beyond the experts to the everyman; highlighting events of local social interest that otherwise slip under the radar.

This event will have a ripple effect that will spread the broad range of ideas to the masses that we need to mobilize to bring about a positive impact in Pakistan.”

I found the talks fascinating and developed a new appreciation for the incredible talent and energy Pakistan has to offer.

AMBER ARIFEEN In this series, Amber Arifeen presents urban women in domestic settings, enlarging their presence on the canvas through unambiguously masculine posturing. Each subject is shown dominating the literal space of the frame; more importantly, the women claim space by elongating, stretching, sprawling their bodies, as if to assert their presence in an otherwise vacant setting. Their body language suggests control and certainty, while the masculine attire underscores an aura of nonchalance and unspoken power.

Arifeen’s work highlights the subtle strategies—what we might call “womanspreading”—that challenge the discourse on women and space.

SANA SAEED We always leave a mark behind. It could be a physical mark on any surface or a nontangible mark floating in your memory. For Sana, “to live is to leave traces” and her artistic practice revolves around these traces. Marks on walls, doors, stains on clothes and dust particles on different objects document time and memory. Someone who was once present to leave a trace behind. Her work focus on the uncertainty of life, for a moment you are present in the strongest appearance and in the second moment you are not. She talks about the “nothingness” which lies between present and past, a stage where person loses his/her sense of belonging.

ZARA SAJID This exhibition talks about femininity not feminism. The curatorial concept put forward was simply to keep in mind the quality of being female and how it is perceived. I wanted Amber & Sana to immerse themselves in that feeling fully and create without any inhibitions in their respective distinct styles.

Why did you decide to become an actor?

Performing arts was always a passion of mine. Since my childhood I was very fond of mimicking actors and performing, thus due to these skills, in school I was the blue eyed boy of all my teachers!

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

My biggest inspiration is Imran Khan! In my early stages while I was struggling I wasn’t able to get through to any platforms that would execute my full potential. I really got inspired by his line; “Allah ne insaan k haath me mehnat aur koshish di hai kamyabi woh deta hay” Tell us about a time when you had to deal with an obsessive fan. What was the situation and how did you react?

I remember an obsessive fan once at Nueplex – he ambushed me and kept hugging me, I was flattered but also a little taken aback!

What is the funniest question that you have ever been asked in an interview?

I remember a voice over man once asked me the funniest question and that question was ; Boxers or underwear?

If you weren’t an actor, what would you be doing right now?

A cop or a soldier, that’s why Baandi is so close to my heart.

Which local actor would you like to act with?

Fahad Mustafa. I’ve always looked up to his acting skills and work ethic.

What is your creative process before shooting?

I learn my dialogues by heart first, then I rehearse my lines in at least 3 different emotions and eventually I go onset, fully prepared!

What’s your motto or the advice you live by?

Passion and patience are the keys to success.
