WOMAN ON THE GO Asma Chishty is the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Destinations Magazine, the leading travel and lifestyle magazine of Pakistan. Asma started her career as a corporate banker in Switzerland and Hong Kong and currently also serves on the Board of Directors of Daewoo Pakistan. Mother of two teenage boys recently moved to Pakistan, and is loving every minute of it!

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I started my career as a banker in one of the world’s largest financial institutions, with whom I worked in Hong Kong, Geneva and Pakistan. After having my children, I left banking and assisted on a purely personal and pro-bono capacity some of the largest charities in Asia to set up their public relations and fundraising strategies. Ready to get back to full time work, I found an opportunity to work with a start-up magazine in a senior capacity which I took instantly and have never looked back.

What was your “aha!” moment?

It was when I moved from Hong Kong to Pakistan and decided to focus on the digital media and publishing business. I observed that while there was some great work being done on the fashion segment, there was very limited quality content on the travel and lifestyle segment. I felt that little was being done to promote the positive image of Pakistan, its heritage, its natural beauty, its flora and fauna all in an engaging manner. I put a small team together and voila, Destinations was launched!

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

Yes. My initial training was as a private banker followed by a stint in corporate banking. Media and publishing came later in life.

When was time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

I never get discouraged. Setbacks are a part of life.

You should be able to get back up on your feet after getting knocked down. Take each disappointment as an opportunity to learn from your mistakes.

People both well-intentioned and otherwise will give you their own opinions and the key is to listen but ultimately it’s not a consensus or a popularity contest. You have to make your own decision, believe in your own strategy and stay the course despite all odds.

Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

Musharraf Hai, for taking L’Oreal from a new entrant to a dominant position in a short period of time. Her immense energy, creativity and ability to inspire really impresses me. Plus she is the driving force behind “Beauty for a better life” which is a charity that is really making a difference in the lives of underprivileged young women by providing them training and real jobs.

Describe a day in the life of Asma Chishty I get up fairly early and then try to catch up on all emails and document reviews by mid-morning. This leaves me the entire day to think, to plan, to meet people and to brainstorm with my team. Invariably there is travel involved so I am in another city or another country every 2 to 3 weeks. And then, work related events are also an integral part of my routine.

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

“Dear, I am going to shut you down if you don’t meet budget”. This kind of bare knuckle, no excuses, performance driven boss and mentor is exactly what people need to push them to perform. Sugar coating and going easy creates a generation of self-entitled people who set the bar low for themselves.

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

My family, my close friends and my personal space. .

What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

My dream is to explore every corner of Pakistan! One specific place would have to be Bahawalpur, as I am a history buff and a true romantic at heart, so exploring the palaces and getting lost in time is my idea of heaven on earth!

Compassionate, has empathy towards her employees, understands better than anyone else the struggles of work-life balance and helps to create a supportive work environment for all her team members. She is also a thorough professional who can function confidently and tirelessly in a work environment that still needs gender diversity, while bringing the softer side of her personality to truly make a difference towards the communities she is engaged with.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

Come back prepared having learned from your mistakes and this time take no prisoners. Have greater empathy for people around me, as I have seen the dark side myself.

Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with?

Xi Jinping. I think we have a lot to learn from him and how he has transformed China into an economic and military power house. And how his policies have dramatically improved the economic well being of over a billion people.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Develop your unique ability to contribute to the workforce, set your expectations high, be confident in your choices, ask for what you want, and find champions who will support your ambitions. And always, always strive to be a feminist.

What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

That one has to chart their own course and that of their organization.

|ABOUT ME How did MINT PR come to life?

After I had been working full-time as a Designers Relation Manager at Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) for three years and then further as a Consultant for PFDC for two years, I finally decided I wanted to start my own business. Being a part of the industry over the years, I had realized that there was a major gap that could be filled between PR entities and people. My main motivation to open my own PR business stemmed from the need to connect businesses with talent and create a platform for people to get better exposure through collaborations.

Have you always wanted to work in PR? PR industry is one that has always fascinated me. I wanted to explore it further and when I finally felt that I have accomplished the necessary communication skills and the right amount of knowledge of the industry, I then decided to plunge in and hence started my own PR and Image Consultancy firm.

What kind of challenges did you face while starting your own business?

Just like any other business, I initially found it difficult to find good, competitive and trustworthy resources and team members to take my plans forward. However now with time, I luckily and thankfully, I have managed to form an extremely consistent team.

Another challenge I faced was that I had to confront many biases in the industry. Many of my friendships and relationships that were based on my previous position fizzled out because of having switched my profession.

Nevertheless, I would like to believe that with the right kind of support system and hard work, I have now managed to make a significant mark in the Pakistani PR industry and people now trust me with my work.

What is your strongest characteristic?

As a woman, I believe that my confidence and the ability to establish myself as an entrepreneur, is something I am very proud of.

What’s your weakest?

My temper.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Ideally, I see myself establishing partnerships as well as a PR agency, abroad, particularly in Dubai I would say.

Tell us 3 things we don’t know about you!

I wanted to become either a criminal lawyer or a crime reporter; I eat a lot and Haider Maqsood is not my husband!

What’s your dream project?

My dream was to have my own business and it’s safe to say that I am currently living that very dream What advice would you like to give your Paperazzi fans?

My advice to the Paperazzi fans out there is that no matter how difficult it seems, holding onto your dreams and working every single day to achieve them is the only most effective way to excel in life.

Often times, out of sheer uncertainty, we never take the dive to start something of our own but if you are dedicated enough, there is nothing in the world that can stop you! Having said that, I believe it is also essential to live your life to the fullest while focusing on your goals.
