we speak to the young & talented fatima tanveer, the force behind Sugar & spice - a home based bakery & catering service in Lahore!

How and when did you start your home based bakery, Sugar & Spice?

Honestly, I don’t even remember when I started SnS, Haha. I’ve been into baking since O-Levels but I think I started taking a few orders orders in 2011. With a rigorous undergraduate program, pursuing baking as a serious profession was not possible and honestly I wasn’t that good with fondant and cake decorating techniques at that time either. I mostly used to bake and decorate cakes for friends and family. The appreciation and motivation I got from them encouraged me to advertise on social media and thanks to my crazy passion for baking, - finally came up with the brand name ‘Sugar n Spice’ in 2012. Since then the name has been the number of orders I get have been increasing since 2015.

How and why did you decide to pursue your career in this business?

Well, the answer to why I decided to pursue a career is my absolute love for baking. Nothing was planned. It’s just that God has been very kind to me and the support I got from my loved ones gave me the motivation to become a home based baker.

Sugar & Spice's speciality is their divine desserts! Which one is your personal favourite?

Hmmm Sugarnspice is loved for its cupcakes, especially Chocolate Overload ones. My personal favorites are Vanilla Caramel Cupcakes and Chocolate Fudge Cake.

We hear that you're super fond of baking/cooking? What are your personal contributions to the extensive menu?

Yes absolutely, I am crazy about it! A lot of hard work was put into designing the menu- extensive research I

What is the best & worst part about this job?

I love the praise and appreciation I get from our clients when the orders are per their satisfaction. That’s the best thing about my job and the key that keeps me

Have you taken any professional cooking/baking courses?

No professional cooking or baking course, just some Thai and Continental cooking classes I’ve taken from Samira Shahzad. The onIy food related degree is my distinction in Food and Nutrition in O-levels and my source of inspiration is my food n nutrition teacher, Mrs Cross- the best ever! She polished my cooking skills and gave the best recipes I have.

going. Hmm worst part is ruined deliveries, terrible humid weather for handling fondant in summers and stress of completing multiple orders on certain occasions such as mother’s day etc.

Do you feel like there is a lot of competition?

Yes tough competition as there are many good home bakers around.

Do you plan on opening up a bakery/restaurant in the near future?

Haha! I hope to but let’s see. Still need to work on that.

Give us 3 tips for running a successful home based bakery/catering service?

Never compromise on ingredient quality, - always be polite to your clients, tell them what you cannot make instead of disappointing them later. – Never take last minute orders for your own sanity.

Our readers would like to know a little about the force behind Sugar & Spice?

Where are you most likely to be found on weekends?

It’s me- the sole owner. Lol. On weekends I’m in the kitchen preparing orders during the day but evenings are for dining out and enjoying!

Your job revolves around food. How do you stay fit?

Haha I’m a fitness freak. I hit the gym and keep a balanced diet on weekdays but Saturdays and Sundays are for eating whatever I crave and yes lots of meetha- not to forget.

Any advice you'd like to give to a junior you, who would like to step into the same field?

Never underestimate yourself. If you’re good at something , be confident about it and sell it.

Lastly, where do you see Sugar & spice in another 5 years?

InshAllah, I hope to improve and add more cake decorating techniques and items to the menu with time and practice. In another 5 years, I see our client base increasing and SugarnSpice coming up with new flavors and designs.

5 things in your makeup bag that you cant live without!

KAT VON D: My most favorite matte lipstick shade has to be lolita by Kat Von D. Its always in my bag because I wear it almost everyday. Its the perfect nude shade and doesn't come off easily.

BRONZER: Instead of blush, i like to keep a bronzer with me at all times.

Hoola bronzer by benefit is super light on the skin and gives the perfect bronzy look!

MAC POWDER: Of course, my compact powder. I have super oily skin so i cannot step out without my Mac studio fix powder. I have to touch up my face after every half an hour so this is literally my savior.

MASCARA: My go- to look is mascara and bold lips so I always keep my sephora outrageous curl mascara (travel size) with me!

CHEEK STAIN: Literally obsessed with this. Just cannot live without my cheek stain from Body Shop.
