amidst the chaos of gulshane-iqbal’s busy monday streets, I found myself lost in conversation with the immensely talented and unabashedly grounded artist, adeel-uz-zafar. i sat wide eyed on the floor of his carpeted studio as he humbly listed the countless art fairs he had been to in India, singapore, Hong Kong and many more places.

Congratulations on your previous shows and best of luck for all your future endeavors! How does it feel to be recognized globally?

Thank you! I graduated in 1988 and my journey started much later. After finding a technique outside the conventional methods of art I found a way to create beyond the limitations of paper and it’s humbling to have my efforts appreciated on such a large platform.

The first show is definitely the toughest; tell us how you felt in the VM Gallery during your first exhibit?

I spent three months working on one piece that was 10ft by 8ft. The idea behind the exhibition was to find a gallery spacious enough to present one large work of art instead of many small ones.

The feedback was excellent and gave me the courage to continue with the technique I had used.

Should we be expecting to see you in more art fairs this year?

I will be attending the Art Basil Hong Kong in March, another art fair in Dubai and possibly a solo show in Singapore by the end of the year. However there’s very possibly a major surprise show happening in Hong Kong in 2018 that I can’t give details about just yet!

Has art always been a passion or is it something you grew interested in over time?

Even in school my teachers would ask me to do a lot of the creative work, like making posters. Art has been interesting for me since childhood.

Do you think your intrigue is genetic?

I have two younger brothers and both of them have chosen business-based subjects, I’m the only one from my family who took art as a subject. My mother however has always been artistic and she’s been my support from day one.

Lastly, what message do you want the readers to get from your art?

My art appeals to all sorts of audiences. Every age group with their own experience can read my work differently and base its meaning according to their personal familiarities towards it.

You were initially a Children’s Book Illustrator. Tell us about your transition from illustrator to artist.

As an illustrator I worked with limitations. My job constrained me to work within the demands of my audience.

Work without boundaries fascinated me; I was intrigued to learn how I would narrate these whimsical stories if I had no guidelines and rules to follow.

Your work now is dark and lonely. What’s the inspiration behind your creations?

Look at the world around us, its in shambles in every way. Something so colourful, beautiful is tainted by wicked. For me the bandages around the toys connote heeling. My inspiration is also essentially personal and my art is a means of relief; it’s meditative for me.

Very often artists have a particular book or movie they draw inventiveness from, which movie or book appeals to you?

A movie, especially King Kong is one I’ve drawn inspiration from often. The greater message hidden behind the fiction is one that makes sense to the real world. A monstrous character is brought into a ‘civilized’ metropolitan city and is expected to conform to the societal norms for acceptance. A savage character that runs away because he was asked to lose his individuality to become one with the community.

Any artists whose work you’re very impressed by?

Yes many! I love the photography-based works like that of Nan Goldin, Helmut Newton and Robert Mapplethorpe. There are many other artists, whose work is fascinating such as Lucian Freud, Gerhard Richter, Takashi 2016

1 Patari Tabeer is an album where we've paired popular contemporary music producers with raw undiscovered talent from across the country. The project had been devised to address a certain problem with Pakistani music. Despite maintaining its cultural relevance, local music has largely been reduced to a couple of annual corporate-sponsored shows like Coke Studio and Nescafe Basement. A decade of terrorism, shrinking public spaces, shift in the media towards news from entertainment, the influx of global culture via the internet and the lack of any formalised industry had taken a huge toll on Pakistani music.

At first, I had believed that the problem was one of delivery 44

and distribution and the arrival of a solution like Patari would help us all move forward. But it soon became clear that many people, particularly the youth, had grown up without having listened to a lot of Pakistani music, and were just not aware of what was going on. We soon realised at Patari that we would need to get people to start paying attention to Pakistani music again.

2 The project was inspired by a chance meeting between me and a man, Nazar Gill, who worked as a cleaner in the apartments I lived in. He came to my flat one day and asked to sing a song for me. Nazar came from a very poor

background in a small city in Pakistan, and he had earlier received some classical training from a local teacher. We thought of taking his ambition and talent and pairing him with a contemporary producer in order to let his voice be heard at a grander stage. He composed a song about finding the Divine inside every heart, and on Christmas Day where he was celebrating the occasion with his family, we went down to his house and filmed them hearing the finished product for the first time. It took another six months for the project to go further. At the time, Khalid was in New York where he met Fawzia Naqvi (no relation to me) who was a Pakistani living in the city. She was also a big fan of Patari, and after some discussions offered to fund a project for us.

3 One of the things that struck us was that the entertainment industry was almost exclusively the preserve of urban, upper-middle class Pakistanis. An ordinary Pakistani, particularly those from outside the major metros of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, had little to no hope of making it big. Yet at the same time, social media was throwing up lots of short-lived stars. There are countless mobile phone videos online of Pakistanis from working class backgrounds singing beautifully, with captions such as “Hidden Talent of Pakistan” and the like.

Taking our cue from Nazar, we decided to start identifying amateur, aspiring musicians from across the country that we could then pair up with contemporary, renowned producers. Our lineup eventually included a rap group from one of Karachi’s oldest, most vibrant and most violent areas; a young boy from Sukkur who had once been the subject of a viral video of him singing; a singer from Peshawar whose father taught her how to sing; and two nomadic singers from Sindh who are amongst the last of a dying breed of musicians native to the region.
