in the spotlight rabia ajaz What first drew you to the art?

The joy of looking at something that is aesthetically pleasing.

What is your background in the arts?

I did my MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. I also studied painting and photography in BNU, Lahore where I got my BFA. Where do you derive your inspiration from?

I am moved by the things that invoke love, hatred, concern, and nostalgia inside me. My paintings have been motivated by relatable heart-wrenching fiction novels as well as the simple imagery of a nail hammered into a wall. It’s whatever has the ability to stir an emotion inside me. I like contradictions and dualities. I love finding beauty and constructing stories around mundane banal objects.

Are they any particular art movements that inspire you?

No. I do not take inspiration from movements. I prefer to seek it in emotions and the world around me.

Can you walk us through the process of developing your work?

I seem to have long incubatory cycles for bigger projects. It can be anywhere from 6 months to a year. It involves a lot of meditation on what the display will look like, how many paintings will I make, how people will react to it if I did it differently. We are always working as artists because we’re constantly imagining scenarios, questioning our thoughts, predicting reactions and readings, and the critique of our potential viewers. I think the most important and underestimated hidden ‘process’ of an artist is the constant weighing of possible solutions and ideas that shuffle in your head uncontrollably.

Of course I do smaller projects in between to keep my mind and hand active.

My process depends on what kind of project I am doing. I did a lot of street photography for my two-inch square paintings. I loved the breadth of energy to be found in photographs taken on the streets in Lahore. I loved zooming in on people and places and finding things that would 32

typically go unnoticed. For another project, I designed LV and GUCCI patterned prayer mats in Photoshop to be passed on to a carpet weaver. So it all depends on what the medium is. I sketch mostly for compositional purposes but other than that, it can be anything from painting a sewn in safety pin onto a canvas, or studying a particular detail in a photograph that I would like to build in paint.

Does art have a calming or exciting effect on your being?

Painting is known to be a therapeutic and meditative exercise. Excitement starts when you finally have something resolved in your head and the water breaks! The calm sets it when the project comes to fruition.

Would you say you are an avid reader?

Does reading play a role in your creative process?

Definitely. As an artist, I go to work in my studio where my co-workers are books, movies, music and my painting surfaces. I love reading fiction. Reading is almost like a visual exercise where my mind is painting characters, settings, rooms, streets and voices. It’s where you’re the ‘designer’ and ‘director’ of everything. This is similar to painting. To provide that interpretative space for viewers to make their own story around it.

Who would you say is your mentor?

Salima Hashmi at BNU. She is an extraordinary tutor who takes great troubles to create opportunities and exposure for her students. Joseph Smith at Pratt Institute who always pushed me further and shared quirky painting techniques and skills.

Do your fashion choices take influence from the art you create? Do you see a similar vein run through both.

I like to keep things simple and minimal.

It is said that great art comes from terribly sensitive souls. Would you agree or disagree to the statement?

Yes. People who are sensitive have sharper senses. Sharper senses should translate into good art. Although extreme exposure or isolation can also lead to creative ideas and fresh perspectives. In the end it’s all about the expression and the delivery. There’s no formula to great art.

What advice would you give to a younger you?

Challenge your parents and teachers more often and don’t be afraid of expressing the ideas you believe in no matter how shocking or surprising you think they might be for others. We all occupy a very unique world because no single person has had the same experiences. No amount of ‘understanding’ or wisdom can bridge that gap. 'No one' is as sure or correct as they pose or appear.

Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for?

I’m really excited to be given a grant for a one-month residency for artists in Vermont. I am also participating in the Imago mundi project where my work will be displayed in the Venice Biennale, 2017.

Tell us about your favorite piece.

I don’t like choosing favorites. Some pieces I am more attached to because of the mood I painted them in or the reasons I painted them. Even those attachments are fleeting and constantly replenished and replaced by new pieces and feelings.

What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career so far?

I was very happy to have received a distinction at the Pratt Institute. My work was also displayed in two shows in New York right after I graduated. Last but not the least, one of my favorite artists, Ayaz Jokhio offering me to do a trade piece with him.
