dawn to dusk: max factor alveena abid & meenahil iqbal take 3 max factor outfits from day to night with on point styling. Where striped pants can be worn in multiple ways, I stuck to the basic rule by pairing my black and white striped jeggings with a plain white tie-neck blouse that can be worn both casually and formally. White sneakers are in vogue and practically work with anything you wear so I also jumped on the bandwagon by pairing my ensemble with platform sneakers. I kept the hair a little messy as it tends to get anyway in Karachi’s humidity. I also kept accessories minimal with simple Dior’s Tribales and a white ceramic Fossil watch. I kept my evening look a little formal by pairing the same top with navy blue dress pants and pointed toe pumps. I feel side swept hair and statement earrings can add a classic touch to your ensemble. I also wore Cartier’s Love and Juste Un Clou bracelets and added a pop of pink to the lips with Mac’s Girl About Town. 40

For my day look, this lace top with its satin belt was in itself gorgeous enough to pull on its own. It had a very "wear anywhere" feel and looked both casual and top-notch in a flash. I felt very confident wearing it and was an instant hit among my friends. For my evening soiree and later the movie night, I wanted a billowy, ungathered look; just removing the satin belt did the trick. I teamed the top with metallic jewelry, gold shimmery clutch, black heels and a bouncy blowdry for that polished and luxe feel. My statement red lipstick completed the look I wanted for the night. 2016

READY, SET, STYLE!
Day Flowy silhouettes are breath of fresh air in summers. I sported a casual look by pairing the printed t-shirt with white chiffon sleeveless cape, flared pants and metallic flatform sandals. Tied my hair in a bun because that’s my go-to day hairstyle. For the evening, I pulled down my flared pants a little lower to give them a bootcut look that’s trending these days. I wore a neon coral tank top and paired it with a matching Aldo’s Aciedia necklce and Mac's Costa Chic lip color. ABOUT ME:
Madiha Sikander Who are your real life heroes? Probably too many to count! But over the top of my head Arundati Roy, Shahzia Sikande & Sabina Khatri from Kiran Foundation
What talent do you wish you had? I think being sociable is a huge talent. I wish I had it.
Most important things in your life: My garden, symbolically and literally. What is your style mantra? I don’t believe in going with fashion trends. I embrace what looks good on me and what is ironed.
What first drew you to the arts? The inclusivity of the arts is something that struck me. Coming from a single parented, matriarchal family there was a kind of social ostracization that I experienced growing up. There were those who were pitiful, those that fulfilled their daily quota of gossip by coaxing me to talk about why my parents parted ways, and then there were others who didn’t want their child to be mingling with a girl from a ‘broken family’. The arts allowed me a sense of belonging and the freedom to live with myself, something that society is so quick to take away from you should there be the slightest nip in your safety netting. Art provided me the means to study and question that very society. It also provided me the space to deviate and develop more intangible ideals of success. What is your background in the arts? I come from a family of pragmatists. Wanting to study art wasn’t given much thought growing up. It was treated more like a child obsession which would wear off with time. I think the only reason why I was resigned to an art education was because of the prevailing belief that as a woman I didn’t have to be highly educated or be the bread winner. So began my BFA at the National College of Arts, Lahore. I chose to major in Miniature Painting. I was very interested in its history, journey and mutation, specially in the light of our colonial past. Where do you derive your inspiration from? To me inspiration is unnecessary and is somehow an overly used cliché when it comes to art. I don’t think I need “inspiration” to speak a language so intrinsically my very own. I feel the best of my work have been a result of the process or the work itself. If I were to sit around and hope that by some force of nature something will occur to me, it could be a long time before anything happens. Are they any particular art movements that inspire you? No really. I keep myself well read and versed. I prefer unconscious influence rather than compulsorily becoming a part of something. Can you walk us through the process of developing your work? The process depends on the work. There is really no single way to approach a body of work. But generally my works happen somewhere between the formal and informal. I cut out interesting images from the newspaper off and on. When one of those works transforms into a work of art is something I cannot predetermine. For example in my recent body of work “You Can Never Step in the Same River Twice” I was using old destroyed family photographs. I was in Karachi visiting my grandparents when the monsoons hit Lahore in 2014. While I was there water managed its way into the house. The carton of family photos, some in frames others in albums, was soaked. I salvaged the ones I could, but there were many that were destroyed. I didn’t throw them away, I kept them. Until one day I decided to repair them. So I scanned them and got them reprinted and began gathering lost information of portraits from other photographs. For one of the works I called my grand-

mother and asked her if she remembered the colour of her Sari and my grandfather’s suit in that particular image. She explained to the asmani neela and tea pink to me in great detail and I transferred it to the image. I began seeing my process synonymous to writing history. Very recently, my grandmother’s sister saw an image of the work and said, “You know, I was standing right there in the middle of both of them in this picture. They were so mean, they cropped me out!” I think I’m going to reattempt the work again, this time I will add her version of day in the middle. Does art have a calming or exciting effect on your being? A bit of both. I feel calmer making my more structure and planned works. May be because I know what the end results will be. But there are times when work isn’t so structured and meticulously planned. At the initial stages of such work one feels excited and nervous. You can’t wait to how things will unfold. Would you say you are an avid reader? Does reading play a role in your creative process? I absolutely would. It takes a lot of reading and research to make a body of work. One can go around making sweeping statements without having read and understood whatever it is one is dealing with. Who would you say is your mentor? I think my adversaries have been my greatest mentors and they don’t have to be people. I am ever thankful for how they knocked me out of my comfort zone and forced me to think alternatively. My cat once ran over my painting with wet paws. The technique I used to repair the work helped me discover a way through which I could work on the most sensitive of paper. I was working with very old books at that time. Tell us about your favorite piece. I would often hear my grandmother long to go meet her brother in India and experience her home. Finally in 2005 she went, as a tourist to a country which was her own once again. She was estranged by the process of taking a visa to enter. The trip was supposed to last two months, but she couldn’t stay there more than two weeks because of health issues. The pain of realizing that her body no longer accepted the air, the beds, the food, she no longer remembered the way around the huge haveli was tangible. So happened my piece “Home away from Home”. I painted an Indian Visa on a passport, such that it looked like the real thing. It was a kind of mockery to these man made limitations, both tangible and intanglible. Why I love this piece the most is because of the feedback it brought to me. I think artists live off feedback. What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career so far? Making a work of art can be a very tedious process. What you see physically is probably only one fourth of the work. Most of it happens in the mind. So to me, there is nothing more fulfilling than to know you’ve achieved the execution something that has been looming in your mind for so long. Do your fashion choices take influence from the art you create? Do you see a similar vein run through both. Well I think it definitely influences my colour choices. I often find myself admiring a dress because of its Persian-landscape- pink, or a mughal-mountain- purple or a kangra-green. It is said that great art comes from terribly sensitive souls. Would you agree or disagree to the statement? I think it’s actually the other way around. Art makes people more observant and inquisitive and therefore sensitive. What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did? What I would be if I wasn’t a visual artist. What advice would you give to a younger you? That emotions are temporary. Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for? I’m pursuing my MFA. It is a more research oriented program as compared to my practice based BFA at the National College of Arts. I’m very excited to see how this will change my approach towards practice and writing. Also, my work is part of “Reading Room”, a travelling show of art works which employ books is now going to New York. Rapid Fire If you could go back in time and have dinner with one person in history who would it be? Mohammad Ali Jinnah. What is a superpower you wish you had? I wish I could time travel. What are the things you cannot live without? I don’t think there is any one thing or things I can’t live without. But there is plenty I can’t live with! What do you do on a Sunday? Sunday is like any other day. 2016

Guilty pleasure? Ignoring texts. On your playlist? Anything as exotic as Ustad Nusrat Fateh or M83. First thing you notice about the opposite sex? The way she carries herself. Pet peeve? Zero tolerance for people who can't dress well. Which celebrity has you star struck? I have no fear in saying that Qandeel Baloch's struggle against the negative Pakistani mindset which shackles our women from going forward had me starstruck. If you could have any superpower? Resurrection of the dead, too soon to lose greats like Edhi Sahb and Heath Ledger. Biggest turn off? People who don't value time and punctuality

A Liner Isn't All You Need – As much as we love a bold black eyeliner, sometimes we need to just let it go. Take a brown eye shadow to your liner brush and apply it as close to your lash line as you can. That will not only make your eye lashes look dense but your eyes pop out aswell, without them screaming "eye liner"!
Get Luminous Lips – ALWAYS exfoliate your lips before applying a matte lip color. No matter how gorgeous the color is we never want people noticing dead skin all over. A lip scrub is all you need to prep your lips for a soft and luminous look!
Make Your Body Glow – Whether it's a day when you decide to drop those shoulders off or a night out where you show off the legs, we all want to have that ideal red carpet glow to our body. Mix a few drop of your favorite liquid highlighter to your body lotion or body butter and apply it on to your collar bones, arms, shoulders and legs to steal the show!
Make The Eyes Look Awake – To make your eyes stand out without any effort, apply a white or cream eye pencil in your lower water line paired with a mascara. That will make your eye look instantly awake!
Eyes First – Always! You don’t want the whole effort of your foundations and concealing going down the drain by spreading your liner or eye shadow all over it. So simply go for the eyes first rule and then wipe off any excess products that falls off before applying foundation.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you chose to go and why? My in-laws, Mr. Suhail Butt and Mrs. Tanya Suhail are big on travelling. They’ve travelled almost 6-8 countries by now and plan to keep doing so. They are permanent client of this travel agency, that put forward all plans for countries and they jump at any opportunity presented to them. So when presented with this opportunity they asked my husband and I, it was a no brainer for me to get on board with them. We call it our second honeymoon as wherever w would travel for a year, it would still be as exciting as a honeymoon to us. We were more worried about my visa denial as I had a weak travel history as compared to Arsalaan’s who had three schenegen visas and travel history of 6 countries. So It came as a shocker and obviously I was in no mood to go without him, but it took some convincing from his part when he told me that we rather flush the money down the toilet if you didn’t go.
travel diaries
Who did you travel with? I travelled with my mother in law, Tanya Suhail and my father in law, Suhail Butt. How's that for breaking stereotypes! Where did you stay? We stayed at the President Hotel in Athens, Capsis Astoria in Crete and I've forgotten where in Satorini but it was in Fira Village. What are the best shopping spots there? Oh CRETE! Our hotel was located in the hub of urban activity! So Mama and I would meander away and go crazy on Zara, Sephora, Pull & Bear, Bershka!!! Although their timings were a bit off, they would close by 5 -8 and sundays were also closed, so that was the day we wandered to explore their city life till like 5 am in the morning.

Finally, any tips? Make sure your husband's office lan line is fixed or else Greece won't give you visa. Jokes aside, If you're thrown into something unfamiliar, don't get scared of it, cry it out, let it out of your system and make the most of the situation. Tell your mind and heart "you won't be here again, so don't regret this." Like BBC, CNN and Time said about me, : "When Life gave her lemons, she made a lemonade stand!"

Suggest places for a perfect night out Oh that has to be santorini, it gets extremely cold after the sunset so you want your significant other to help you out and lend a jacket (Very Cliche! I know), but it was in this time that I missed Arsalaan the most, Also the night scene in Athens and Crete, they used to have parties on the rooftop pool, now that is something one should never miss out. The street scene in Crete, loitering about holding
Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on Take a dip in the pool, go to the highest peak in Athens and enjoy the sunset and the hike. One thing we missed out in Athens was, on our last day our guide told us of this small island a few meters across the water belonging to a family, who own a restuarnt on it. You are supposed to book it in advance, reach to the jetty of athens’ shore where you signal the owners’ of the island who bring their boat across, pcik you up, feed you fresh fish and seafood, keep you till sunset and then drop you off back to Athens’ shore.
travel diaries
What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Crete's downtown area! The ferry rides between the islands! Use the Blue Bird ferry, it had amazing facilities, since we had a overnight at one the ferry rides, I did not feel like sleeping in one bit, their café was open 24/7 and it was a smooth ride. Santorini's restaurants with the amazing views and the wine tasting.(I don't know if you can put that up) Go to this area in Athens up in the mountains which has a hidden gem of a lake of warm temperature, take a dip in it.
hands, looking at the pubs and cafe's filled with people. Mama and I would wish to have the same freedom and entertainment available to all Pakistanis. Because it's how people function, you work throughout the week and on the weekends you just want to have some fun, hangout with your friends in a secure place or just girls walking down the street for a bite. I wished that would happen soon in Pakistan.
travel diaries
Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Kartos in Santorini in Oia Village! The best pasta I've had, and the best fish! In Athens, there was street behind the Acropolis museum which had brilliant roadside cafes! Crete also had this sandwich bar, which was located near this fountain square and wide array of old architecture surrounding it. In Athens we went high up in the mountains to come across this village which had roasted lamb, the restaurant’s name was Minos restaurant.

You move slowly through the obstacle course at the start of the week, gathering points as you go. Speed is not the issue, style is much more important. By Tuesday or Wednesday, your speed is going to pick up anyway. Communication also figures strongly: If someone is making eyes at you, don't be shy, engage and flirt, but nothing too heavy. Thursday and Friday find you in funny waters -- you may get emotional about a family situation (family situations can be especially stressful) -- but Saturday and Sunday are the kinds of days that remind you that it's fun to be alive.
You walk out of the house on Monday feeling energetic, luxurious, creative and prepared for romance. Naturally, not all of these feelings will last into Tuesday and Wednesday -- you'll get to put all your energy to use, but the feelings of luxury, creativity, and romance will all be overshadowed by what you have to get done. By Thursday you'll finally get a break. Tell a friend about all the things you're juggling. And Friday, if you meet someone who rocks your world, tell them. Let your feelings be known. This weekend, when someone drives you nuts, practice tolerance.
The roller coaster might be bumpy on Monday, but that doesn't mean you should eject yourself from the ride -- that would clearly only make things worse. Focus on getting through the day no matter how many busybodies and worrywarts cross your path. Tuesday and Wednesday will also be crowded with people, but they will be good people, people you already know and love or people you want to meet. On Thursday and Friday, worries about money keep you from being able to think clearly about anything else, but this weekend reminds you how little money matters ultimately.
All of your crazy ideas? Monday is the day to share them. Take a group to lunch or invite friends over for a dinner party and pretend that you are all famous writers and artists at the forefront of a new movement. Be an iconoclast. Your social life is a ship these days and somehow you've been voted captain. Surprise everyone with the energy you bring to the task. The week sees you being wilder than usual and not feeling encumbered by authority. As energy levels are high, so are emotions (remember this on Friday). Expect a bombastic weekend.

The boss is bothering you on Monday -- not that there's anything wrong per se, but the energy is off and maybe you're a bit cranky. Tuesday and Wednesday, let your friends cheer you up: Sitting back and listening to your pals talk amongst each other is endlessly entertaining. Somehow these intellectual debates never become contentious -- probably because, beneath it all, you love one another. Thursday is a group-hug kind of day (it would be hilarious if you could actually convince your friends to go for a group hug). This weekend has you beaming.
The sight of an airplane in the sky on Monday makes you wistful, and it also makes you think, 'OK, what about me? Where do I want to go?' Time to make travel plans -- big or small, it doesn't matter, just go somewhere with a friend or even by yourself (great soul-searching opportunity). Work stuff has you occupied Tuesday and Wednesday (cross as many things off your list as possible, be careful when communicating, focus on the details). Thursday and Friday are family days. Saturday is packed to the gills with plans and people, as is Sunday. Be openminded and flexible.
An apple pie is enticing, but think of how you would feel if you sat down and ate the whole thing. In other words, be careful of indulging too much in beautiful things. Besides, you don't want to weigh yourself down, because you need to be on your toes Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday requires your total focus: You'll have to put blinders up to the rest of the world just to get all your responsibilities taken care of. Friday will be frustrating (not a big day for progress) unless you stop and appreciate all that can be taken for granted. This weekend, be active.
You and you-know-who are sitting at either end of a seesaw. They may be a stronger force, but you have subtle talents of balance and timing. The polarity is interesting; see if you can find a way to get the best out of this relationship. You're good at making the most of things this week, including tricky friendships. What you're not good at this week is money (don't let anyone entrust you with any midweek). Friday sees you getting what you want and dreaming about the future, and Saturday and Sunday are low-key days, not days to exercise the ego.

A family member comes into your life on Monday (or calls you up) and leads you toward a small but meaningful personal discovery -- there are aspects of yourself that only your family can draw out of you. Discoveries abound Tuesday and Wednesday as well, especially in the romance realm. Put on your safety goggles, because sparks will fly. Thursday finds you slightly crippled by all the conflicting emotions running through you; to be productive, just stop thinking about them. A power struggle comes between you and a friend (or lover) over the weekend. Do whatever it takes to make things right.
A love letter changes everything at the outset of the week and plants a smile on your face that's impossible to wipe off (it will stay there for days). Tuesday and Wednesday, you're feeling overwhelmed -- secretly, inwardly happy, but nonetheless overwhelmed -- and not doing much at all is the greatest gift you could give yourself. Thursday and Friday are romantic (if the plans are left up to you, be creative, weird and daring), but this weekend you end up having a lot of time on your own. Spend it doing something healthy and good for you.

Say what you mean -- no one will be offended. And if they are offended, well, they'll get over it. Communication is good on Monday, and it's good on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. This is a busy, no-nonsense week. If things aren't clicking on Thursday, it has more to do with mismatched energy than with a failing on anyone's part. No matter what, your relationships are the key to success and happiness -- don't let them go by the wayside just so you can achieve a silly goal or two. This weekend, the sun is smiling down on you, even if it's cloudy out.
Integrity and perseverance are important at the start of the week, but so is having fun. Monday reminds you of being a kid again -- of playing games in imaginary settings and goofing around with friends you feel like you've known forever. You don't get to indulge like this often. Come midweek you have to put on a serious face again and strike out into the serious world to do serious things. And Thursday and Friday find you seriously focused on one person. The weekend? Seriously emotional -- but bear in mind that things may not be as they seem.
