ABOUT ME:

saeed akhtar

Tell me a little about yourself/childhood I graduated from NCA in the 60’s. I was one of the earliest batches to graduate from NCA. After graduating, I was offered a position at the College which I gladly took up. Having worked at NCA for more than thirty years, I retired in 1998 as the Head of Fine Art. Since then I have been painting, running my studio and enjoying life with my family. When did you decide to be an artist? When one is “nikamma” when it comes to academics, they’re forced to do other things. I was extremely unhappy in my FA. I was lucky to have had the support of my family and they encouraged me to be best at what I love. We have the bad habit of forcing our kids to be something they don’t want to be - one must recognize talent and hone it. What advice would you give to a younger you? 32 24 38

Don’t take shortcuts. It will always catch up with you. You need to paint for yourself and every thing needs to be perfect. If you don’t take pride in your work, you won’t be successful. Who is your mentor? All my teachers at NCA have served as mentors. Shakir Saab, my Principal, Mrs. Abbasi - my design teacher, Jamila Zaidi - my art teacher, Sir Taufiq taught me about sculpture, Sir Chughtai for his technique, and Nazi Rishad for being amazingly strict and keeping us on our toes. What inspires you? I’m inspired by my surroundings. Inspiration to me comes from people, clothing, nature and my travels. What kind of criticism have you dealt with in the past? And how have you dealt with it? People have the right to criticize my work. One must remember that they will only say what they’re truly capable of. I’ve never asked anyone to write anything specific about me or my work - I just put in my best and present my work. My job is to make art and that’s what I do. Someone once commented that my yellow series was extremely weak, not well executed and underdeveloped. However, when mangoes get ripe, they turn yellow. When the fields are ready for harvest, they turn yellow. For me, yellow was a sign of maturity. Aside from creating works of art, you also teach art. How did you get started as a teacher of the arts? As an artist, it is important to stay in Pakistan to gain recognition. I was offered a job at the College even before I had graduated. I started my teaching career as a demonstrator, and passed all the levels - lecturer, assistant professor, associate, and head of department - to get where I am today. I studied abroad in Tuscany for a year, where my style and study was greatly influenced. Unfortunately, I was never able to study the nude female figure here in Pakistan. Why has oil been your choice of canvas over the years? Oil is definitely the easiest medium to work with. I feel like oil gives you the most freedom to work with it. If you make a mistake, you can quickly paint over it. This isn’t the case with every other medium, especially watercolour. However, having said all that, I have worked with pencil, charcoal and clay. Painting remains my favourite as it combines all the different elements into one work. Tell us a secret thats never been revealed in an interview before. We're all simple, special people - there’s nothing I’ve done that has been 2016 2015

extraordinary. Its only through my work that I’ve established myself. I’m a hardworking man with a true spirit. Your thoughts on the art scene in Pakistan. Are you happy with the level and quality of work being produced? There are only a handful of people making good quality work in Pakistan. People have gotten recognition extremely early in their careers, and have then stuck to a particular style of working, limiting their creativity. None of my paintings look similar, and I promised myself that I won’t repeat any of my work. One must have strong foundations to build grand structures on. What painting are you most proud of? I have to confess - I do have two favourites. I made a painting for my granddaughter on her birth Maheen ka Burraq. This hangs in their home today! I have been made many offers for it but have to politely decline. The other painting which remains a huge favourite is the Lady in White. There was an event going on at the College once and I stopped a beautiful, young lady asking if I could paint her. Once at my studio, I draped her in a white curtain. The jewellery on her is made from my imagination. This was considered a groundbreaking painting, as the dress and background were all the same colour. What’s the hardest part about being a painter? A singer may get famous after singing one song. A painter has to maintain his standard. Each painting speaks for itself. However, the advantage is that a painter can do what he wants. He or she can add or subtract as and when they please. They have more freedom than a photographer. How do you feel about selling pieces? I don't feel bad about selling pieces. This not only

34 26

increases the value of one’s work, but also gives one importance and appreciation. Paintings become historical documents. I might not be around, but my paintings will still be here. We become a part of a country through this work. Art, literature, sculpture all help us learn about the past. Can you walk us through the process of developing your work? I always start with a sketch which I then develop. I go through multiple sketches before I move on to painting. I sometimes sketch from imagination, and sometimes directly. I have made pieces in less than 40 minutes, but have also worked on pieces for years. It depends on what I’m feeling. Do you have a muse? We all know about your love affair with your self-portraits! Yes, I am my own muse. It’s extremely convenient to draw yourself as one can always turn to a mirror for help. When I was making the famous Quaid e Azam painting, I would make people model in sherwanis for me so I could get the flow of fabric, posture and body language correctly. This was necessary to capture the folds, lights and shadows. I must also mention that one must turn to nature for direction. Life is so happening as it is, one always finds inspiration in it.

the fashion list!

ready, set, style! th is week zara peerzada wears four sty lish house of kamiar ro kni o ut fits and makes them her very own.

This classic outfit - one that I am still in love with - a bright yellow ghaghra and a kameez with a deep back made me swoon. I gave it a sixties spin with a huge messy bun at the back, a headband and my favourite red lipstick to finish it off! This long fitted jacket with embellished flared pants was one of my favourities! I did wavy loose hair with a side braid to bring it out of the bridal zone.

28

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2016

This kameez was definitely one of my favourite pieces from Kami's latest runway collection. Thought it is meant to be worn with pants, I decided to wear it as a cocktail dress and style it with a top knot and dark lips.

I paired this beautiful heavily embellished jacket with a simple pair of jeans and some chunky pumps to edge it up a bit. To top it off, I made a structured Mohawk braid!

Nimrah Khokhar is a fashion house that focuses particularly upon exquisite artistry and details of the craft. the feminine silhouettes and flattering cuts blended in a harmonious mix of contemporary and classic make the designs distinct and distinguishable. Although a relatively new face in the fashion world, Nimrah Khokhar has a devoted following amongst socialites and fashionistas who appreciate her signature style.

A Floral utopia the collection is inspired by the tales of chloris- the greek goddess of flowers and gardens. there is dominant use of a diverse range of flowers, petals, leaves and other inhabitants of gardens that are intricately embellished onto luxuriant sheer fabrics. the vivacious festive couture features dreamy ethereal silvers, blush pinks, dust golds tones on rich fabrics. we speak to the talented designer about our three favourite outfits from her latest collection: 30

Moon-kissed Freesia This immensely detailed embroidery on grey organza fabric is crafted intricately! The silver fabric not only accentuates the exquisite embellishment but contrasts well with the sea green dupatta added for a pop of colour. Nimrah's attention to detail is phenomenal - we particularly love the scalopped edges of the dupatta!

Garden Flora The embellishment of this shirt is extremely unique. The delicate embroidery has patterns of wild plants and poisonous fruits. The gorgeous pink, waist belt and flow of the fabric makes this outfit a winner!

Brand: Nimrah Khokhar Model: Sarah Sarfaraz Hair and makeup: Qasim from SABS Photography: Stop Style Productions

Riffat’s Pixie Dust This shimmery dust gold outfit has been named after Nimrah's mother. She took inspiration from her old wedding clothes. The use of thick naqshi is very limited nowadays. She's used naqshi with a more modern technique to give it a contemporary look with a traditional touch.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles!

travel diaries

Where did you choose to go and why? We stayed at the Grand hotel on Vasant Kunj. It is a beautiful I choose to go to India. India is a unique travel destination that's growing in popularity and I absolutely love going to meet friends while on business trips and of course, to shop! India's rich culture, different languages, great cuisines and lively people make it a great place to visit.

Who did you travel with?

I usually travel with my husband and kids, but this time, I was in India for Shaan-e-Pakistan. This three day exhibition was held in Delhi. I travelled with my team and many other members of Pakistan's fashion community.

Where did you stay?

travel diaries

hotel located in the heart of South Delhi with a full-service spa and an outdoor pool. The best part of the hotel was that it faces three mega malls - The Ambience Mall, Promenade and DLF Emporio.

What are the best shopping spots there?

It all depends on what exactly one wants to buy. You can get things from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 200,000. When it comes to high end Indian brands the places to visit are the Crescent Mall and DLF Emporia for clothing and accessories. For more reasonable shopping, I would highly recommend Lajpat Nagar and Karol Bagh. I'm quite fond of CTC place Moti Nagar for

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out?

Indian is full of historical places. In Delhi you must visit the Qutab Minar, Lotus Temple, Jamia Masjid in Chandni Chowk, Red Fort and the one and only Taj Mahal in Agra. It was a true delight to go to Agra and visit the eight wonder of the world.

What can you do there to relax and unwind? Spas are pretty popular in Delhi. I would ideally choose The Amatrra Luxury Ayurvedic Day Spa at the Ashoka Hotel to relax and unwind. Fly down to Goa and enjoy the beautiful beaches and resorts for a truly relaxing vacation.

Finally Any tips:

India has always been a true delight to visit. Pakistanis have a lot of misconceptions about visiting India and safety issues. I would highly recommend you all to visit the country at least once to understand the people and country better. They are no different than us. I've always been given a very warm welcome there and the hospitality has been amazing. Theres no language barrier, you get Halaal food everywhere, and it is one of the best places to shop.

I'm a complete foodie and just love the variety in India, your are actually spoiled for choice. If you love street food then Parathay wali gali at Chandi Chowk has delicious stuffed parathay. Karol Bagh's Roshan Kulfi with kesar badam is to die for. Haldirams Channa Bhatura, Vada Pao and Raj Kachori are must-haves. For fine dining I would highly recommend Sets at Emporio Mall, Bukhara at Sheraton Maurya, House of Ming at Taj Man Singh and Mokash for authentic Indian cuisine. Do try Pebble street cafe for a fun night out with friends!

The fusion of good music, perfect ambience with delicious food makes it to my list! It is perfect for a night out with friends. You get to see a lot of young people enjoying the music ,dancing and truly having fun. It's a feel good place with lots of positive energy.

The start of the week will feel about as exciting and fresh as day-old coffee, but it will give you a chance to catch up on little things you've been meaning to get to. As the week progresses, get ready to roll up your sleeves and help a friend in crisis. Coming to their rescue will bring you more satisfaction that you could have imagined. Hold off starting any new projects or signing legal documents until Thursday or Friday. Before the week's out, you'll have an uncomfortable encounter with a jealous coworker. Keep your cool and all will be fine.

The wonderful energy of your fun-filled, romantic weekend will carry over into the start of the week, bringing positive feedback and good times for your work and personal life. You deserve this happiness, so savor it. Mid-week, things might start to feel routine, so to perk things up, why not check out a Pilates class or try that new Brazilian restaurant? As the week comes to a close, one of your closest relationships will grow more intense. You'll find yourself talking about passionate issues, possibly even your thoughts on marriage. They really want to know what you think, so voice your true feelings about everything and don't worry -- they won't think anything but good thoughts.

A family member will be in and out of your thoughts all week -- perhaps a phone call is in order to clear things up? Ignore unwanted advice from coworkers this week, especially if it's financiallyrelated. Feel good about making your own decisions. You'll have a lot of romance toward the end of the week ... enjoy some quality one-on-one time with someone who is your partner in every sense. Share your feelings -- and find out how they really feel about you. They may finally tell you.

This week starts off well -- expect lots of positive encounters with friends and coworkers alike. You'll have many dates, dinners and appointments to schedule -- the earlier you nail down the details, the better. Keep yourself busy at work as the week continues -- it will take your mind off troubles at home. Go slowly on new projects, and ask around to see who wants to lend you a hand. You may get a lot of offers. By the end of the week, you may be indecisive about some legal documents. Hold off signing until you are sure about the details.

You'll be one busy little bee this week, and you'll love every minute of it! Making order out of the chaos that surrounds you will bring a deep sense of accomplishment. The odd actions of a loved one will make more sense. Can't decide whether or not to take the plunge on that big purchase? Take some time to mull it over. If you pull out that credit card too soon, you could be sorry. After such a productive week, you may feel invincible -- but you're not, so resist setting unrealistic goals. Always take things at your own pace.

Even when there are a million details flying around in your head, you'll find a way to put it all on hold when your friends need you -- and they'll need you a lot this week. Your listening skills will get quite a workout! A romantic date Thursday or Friday will give you the attention you've been missing for a while. Expect future plans to be made that night. It's time to re-evaluate your attitude toward money and material goods when a weekend shopping spree brings change to more than just your wardrobe.

You can keep a secret, right? You'd better -- someone powerful is going to trust you with some confidential information. They may be testing you, so keep your lips sealed! Tough decisions need to be made by the end of the week -- think long and hard about it. Ask others what they would do. Resist taking the easy way out. People will be increasingly drawn to you as the week continues; they are eager to shower you with compliments. Try not to blush! By the weekend, you'll be feeling a renewed sense of power and confidence.

The work week starts off a bit rough today -- a conflict with your boss makes this a bad time to ask about that overdue raise. On the bright side, your friends and coworkers have never been more in love with you! Members of your inner circle are dying to schedule time with you. Say 'yes' to every invitation, and you'll enjoy a week full of fun and laughter. Pay attention to your dreams, especially toward the end of the week. Confusing as they may be, they'll give you a glimpse into your subconscious that could spark something big.

Get out your calendar and start making those vacation plans -- this week is a great time to do all the research, fact-finding and bargain-hunting you'll need for a great trip. You'll get a lot of work off your plate early in the week, but by Thursday your empty inbox will once again be flooded. You may spin your wheels a bit, but by the end of the week, key decisions will get you more organized. You'll gain power at the office and prestige in the eyes of your friends.

Starting off the week with some big business moves may not be wise -- save any deal-making for later in the week. Right now, it's more about being cautious and not taking things at face value. As the week moves on, you'll feel a growing closeness to one of your newer friends. Use your increasing confidence to meet new people and be more outgoing in situations where you are usually shy. Your career is your priority at the end of the week, when some deep feelings about ambition could set the stage for that big talk with your boss.

Helping those you love can be a tricky thing -- how do you offer good advice without being too critical? As the week progresses, keep that in mind when people come to you for your feedback. You don't always have to know everything inside and out to offer your opinion, so don't let that stop you. Take a day at the end of the week to clean out your closets and purge yourself of things you no longer use. If a headstrong friend pushes you to get involved in something you're not sure about, tell them 'no' -- and don't back down.

You deserve some gold stars for the way you've been sticking to your budget lately! To make an even bigger dent in your debt, make it a project this week to review your finances and research some conservative investment ideas. Throughout this week you'll enjoy a nice balance of friends, free time and romance. All your emotional needs will be met (and then some!). Going into the weekend, you'll be relaxed and ready to look at some issues more deeply. Try to base your conclusions on the actions of others, not your own ego.
