What sparked your interest in fashion?

I was always fascinated by exclusive style in clothes. And my interest in dress making particularly started when I moved to Karachi. So I started experimenting with new colours and styles on myself. My family and friends started liking my work and I started designing for them out of my house and this is how my business started flourishing.

What made you take fashion more seriously and make a career out of it?

Fashion Design is definitely a tough and competitive field, but it's also really creative and exciting. My personal motivations for getting into this business were mainly my love for elegant clothes. I always had very particular ideas about what I wanted to wear-- sometimes I couldn't find clothes I liked, so I would design my own. I started making clothes for my family members and friends and made a career out of it. It's a pretty unique field because it's both a business and an art, which was really appealing to me.

Are you self-taught or did you study fashion design?

I do not have a formal fashion degree and you can say I am a selftaught fashion talent.

How has your work evolved since you began your own label?

The basis of most of my work is traditional. But our industry has become very competitive and there is a lot of western element in general clothing. The evolution I see in my work is that I have started combining the contemporary style of work with silhouettes. My recent collection includes embellished dupattas and long shirts which I feel will be

appealing to a contemporary audience.

Are there any types of clothing that you avoid wearing?

Yes I am not too fond of skimpy or revealing outfits. The philosophy behind SK creation has everything to do to adore femininity which I personally believe lies in elegant dressing.

What is your inspiration behind your clothes?

Most of my designs take inspiration from old world glamour particularly from the Mughal era combined with contemporary fashion. I am inspired by striking silhouettes and enchanting colours which is very much reflective in my creations. One could see often use of traditional embroidery and embellishments in my work. We put a lot of emphasis on craftsmanship as I want women to appreciate all of the expertise that went into making her dress .

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work?

I love talking to young people and I work with lots of young people.

Their insights definitely fascinate me but so does talking to older people, people in their 70s or 80s who also are just as tuned into fashion but from a different perspective. I am fascinated by different embroidery patterns and finishing styles at the moment.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your brand?

You have to be patient and your moment will come and you have to focus on what you are aiming to achieve.

What advice would you give to young designers?

I am also not too old in this industry and I am still under the learning phase, yet I have learned that you need to assemble a great team to do things well. And a very critical part of your work is your client management. You should aim to go above and beyond for all clients, and build sincere relationships with your clients. Be honest and open with your clients and provide realistic expectations, and deliver on them.

Are you superstitious or do you have any rules you live by?

I am not superstitious but I believe in intuition. I have strong religious inclination and I always seeks Allah’s help in whatever task I take up be it personal or professional.

Tell us a little about yourself. Your back ground etc.

I did my graduation from Lahore and after which I got married and moved to Karachi. For past few years I am in Lahore. I have two daughters, both are grown up. Apart from my work routine, I give my time to the girls and of course my family and friends. I like to travel and so whenever possible I go for a short vacation.

For the ‘Festive’ collection, Élan partnered with L’Oréal Paris to introduce ‘Eid Makeup Looks 2017’. Makeup Expert Saima Rashid Bargfrede curated 3 looks, based on the latest makeup trends from Paris Fashion Week Mar 2017; Dewy Fresh, Blush Boom and Color Me Summer. The Dewy Fresh look captures the trend of glowing skin paired with nude makeup on the eyes and lips, perfect for the earthy tones used in the collection. Blush Boom brings the trend of Draping to life; extended contouring using different shades of blush. Color Me Summer is crafted with iridescent glamour on the eyes and a bold brick red on the lips. The campaign was shot across the historic yet breathtaking vista of Çraan Palace Kempinski, Istanbul by Nadir Firoz Khan.

DEWY SKIN: This trend was selected for its universally flattering nature. Nothing looks better than healthy skin, and in the summer season, skin should be allowed to breathe and look radiant from within – with a little bit of help from makeup. To create the look, we prepped the skin with a healthy dose of moisturizer, followed by the Infallible Total Cover Foundation, the new face and body foundation by L’Oreal Paris launching in stores this week. This was followed up by the Total Cover Concealer Palette, to combat the effect of any dullness, redness and blemishes on the skin. The Infallible Sculpt Palette was used to delicately contour and highlight the face, layered with pearly shades from the Blush Paint Palette (launching soon) on the high points of the cheeks, temples and bridge of the nose to create the perfect ‘lit from within’ look.

BLUSH BOOM: This look works with the trend of Draping, which was huge on fashion runways for Spring/Summer 2017. Draping is a form of contouring using different blush shades to follow the natural bone structure. We used the Infallible Blush Paint Palette in 02 Amber, which has 5 different blush tones from matte to pearly, to create a high intensity blush finish.

COLOR ME SUMMER: There’s no Eid and no summer without colour. This look used high intensity iridescent shades from the Color Riche La Palette Nude – Rose. The lower lash line was smudged in for evening Eid glamour and a Color Riche Collection Exclusive Pure Red Lipstick was used in Blake.
