Door Awareness of

Sitting at a roadside while teaching children from her neighbourhood, this housewife did not realise what her effort would transform into! We spoke to the lovely humanitarian – the Chairperson of Door of Awareness, Mrs Ruba Humayun, and her son, the Project Director, Ghazi Taimoor, who are working for change with children from the slums of Lahore.

The organisation that Mrs Ruba established runs 13 FREE schools in and outside Lahore, catering for more than 1,000 underprivileged students. Excitingly, the organisation also operates 4 vocational training centres to provide underprivileged women an access to an independent livelihood! Being run by academics and volunteers from across Lahore, Door of Awareness is a solution to the problem of illiteracy and intolerance in our neighbourhoods. free education for the underprivileged was their dream – let’s find out more about it!

Tell us a little about your non-profit charity – Door of Awareness.

Mrs Ruba: Door of Awareness was not a charity to start off with. It simply was a woman who wanted to take charge and strive for education and female empowerment. It was in 2008 when Mrs Humayun started engaging with street children in a slum near Model Town Lahore.

She used food to attract and engage with street children, to whom she started teaching basic literacy. Her work gained momentum as others joined her work.

ABOUT ME

The organisation was formally registered in 2007, and with the dedicated team of staff and volunteers, she used this model to set up 12 more schools across the city and its suburbs – within pockets of underprivileged areas.

We now operate a network of 13 free schools, 4 vocational centres for women and various other projects! We don’t charge our students a single penny! In fact we give them free books, notebooks and educational resources – and prizes to keep them motivated to keep coming to school.

How many students do you aim on educating?

Ghazi: Limitless! We gradually want to expand our network of schools all across the country and get as many out of school children into school as possible. We have already initiated a project in a village named ‘Mureedke’ and we are aiming to take this further in villages outside Lahore.

Tell us a bit about your aim?

Ghazi: Our vision is to provide free, quality education to enable social mobility. As our students progress higher up, we envisage to teach them vocational skills to enable them to gain employment, and work. For those who wish to pursue further education, we will ensure they are enrolled at college and university and achieve their dreams!

Any future plans for expansion?

Mrs Ruba: Yes! Our operating model and procedure enable us to set up branches of our schools and operate them centrally. Our schools are generally low-frills, so once we find a willing donor, we set up a school in a new, targeted vicinity. Education is the solution to a myriad of problems that our country faces, and we will give it all it takes to spread the light of education across Pakistan!

Ghazi: My mother oversees the operations, whereas I distantly manage the organizational strategy, academic quality, financial controls along with training and development from London. We have been blessed with a very passionate team of volunteers and donors who look after individual projects and operations. Our staff comprises of a

ots of strong sunblock. I'm talking SPF 35+. Don't ignore the sun cooling sprays. Add them to your shopping basket. Keep them around during your sunbathing sessions at the island and spray them on generously. It'll save you from the flaky, skin-peeling sunburns.

Also, moisturizers.

Needless to say, plenty of beachwear. I had to look around a lot but I got everything I needed to get my beach outfits on point from Promise, Tommy Bahamas, Zara and Ted Baker.

A waterproof phone case and a selfie stick because who doesn't want some super beautiful underwater selfies with the fishes in the corals.

A sun hat and a few pairs of pretty beach footwear. My favorite pairs were the orange sandal Crocs and my purple Havaianas.

Coconut Oil! Hair can really take a hit with constant dipping in the ocean. What really helped to protect my mane was a douse of Coconut Oil all over my locks before hitting the waves. It saved me from a lot of damage and heartache.

A few sachets of Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS). The chances of getting a sun stroke, heat stroke or dehydration are a little higher on a beach vacation so having these sachets handy if you feel the symptoms could really make a world of a difference.

One of my favorite activities other than lounging on the sun beds was snorkelling. It was my first time ever but it's going to stay with me forever and I recommend it to everyone. We bought the gear at the island but a smart advice is to buy your own mouth piece and goggles before take off. It'll be economical and you'll get a better variety to choose from.

Pack your DSLR if you have one. You will want the best quality pictures of these moments that will be invaluable for the rest of your life. And the view deserves to be captured in nothing less than HD. Do not pack a book. You will never touch it. Pack portable speakers instead and start a private party instead. You're on vacation. Bust a move not a chapter!
