How and when did you start your jewellery line called 'Print Therapy'?

We were always mesmerized by the souvenir-value of period objects and how they construct the sense of past though the memories that they hold. So, in 2013 to celebrate nostalgia of our magnificent past and portray it in a modern context, we came up with the idea of Print Therapy as a jewelry brand to create pieces with meanings and emotional value.

When did you first realise that you want to pursue your career as a jewellery designer?

We always wanted to create something that goes beyond being merely a decorative piece and we believe noting could be more powerful than jewelry when it comes to expressing sentimental values. People never forget the moment a jewel was given to them by someone, or how a piece they bought made them feel. This memory lasts a lifetime and is passed down through generations with the piece.

We love how you incorporate prints so elegantly in the pieces. Has it always been florals or do you like playing around with different prints?

Thank you so much for your appreciation actually floral prints just emerged as testaments to our never ending love for nature especially flowers but we don’t want to restrict our self to just one print form. We are currently working on a project in collaboration with Chapter 2 by Khaadi to develop a collection of jewel pieces that respond to certain social issues and the kind of prints that we have specifically created for this range are more on the abstract lines.

What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line?

Trust me there wasn’t any fear at all. I personally feel the ability to create something really empowers us to connect to people, to get to know them and to let them know about ourselves. I clearly remember when we were planning this brand we felt supper excited and extremely ambitious.

Where do you get inspiration from?

History is never finished, neither is identity. It is continually refashioned as people make cultural meaning out of shifting social and political circumstances. So, to develop collections we love looking to centuries past not just to get inspired but to develop a better understand of who we really are and the world around us.

What is the favourite & worst part about being a costume jewellery designer?

To date I am only known to the perks of being a costume jewelry designer. I love every single thing about it. I mean process of designing a jewel piece inspired by a certain aspect of history literally takes you on a momentary surreal voyage to a bygone era of opulence, serenity and poise and offers a soft escape from hectic city life.

How do you want women to feel when they're wearing your jewellery?

When they wear print therapy we want them to feel extremely beautiful and very happy while embracing their true self and taking pride in being women.

Any piece of advice you would give to an aspiring jewellery artist?

I have been noticing, currently people take styling as an image or a bodily practice that actually positions them as individuals in a society and jewelry plays a major role to compile a look. So any one who aspires to become a jewelry designer has a great scope. All you need to do is to believe in your dreams and have some originality.

Our readers would like to know a little about the force behind the Print Therapy?

Print Therapy is actually a brain child of me and my wife Saba. We both have a degree in fashion design but it never restricted us to just clothes. We both have our own individual believes, personalities, experiences and this is how it brings diversity to our design philosophy.

Do you plan on opening up a store in the near future?

At the moment we are trying to strengthen online retail representation of our brand but our long term goals do include opening of physical stores.

Lastly, where do you see Print Therapy in another 5 years?

In 5 years’ time we see Print Therapy as a life style brand with a very diverse sort of product range. We are also strategizing to place print therapy on international fashion landscape.

kit & kaboodle Tell us a little about Kit & Kaboodle?

Kit & Kaboodle is a US based buying house with more than 200 venders from different parts of the world under our umbrella. We have two main concepts: one is our boutique concept that you’ll see on the ground floor of MM Alam and packages mall showroom where we focus a lot on a variety of accessories for styling your home. And then we have our signature collection which you can find at MM Alam first floor where things are more timeless. There’s a classical touch to some of them. Here we focus more on the bigger pieces like the main furniture.

What does the name mean and what is the significance behind it?

Kit & Kaboodle has originated from the 18th century, England. It signifies ‘the whole lot’.

And in general it means “all and everything’. It reflects that we want to bring all and everything in harmony for the perfect home interior.

You are from Norway, what is the journey from Norway to Pakistan been like?

It’s obviously a very big difference between Norway and Pakistan in general but I have had the experience of living abroad for several years. I have lived in Middle East and other countries as well so I have that international exposure. My partner Kamran is from UK and from a very successful business family.

We make a great team together as we both share the passion for this business and we give our heart and soul to make it successful!

What difficulties have you faced so far?

To be honest there haven’t been any great difficulties. Obviously there are challenges in any start up but we have been extremely fortunate that the feedback from our customers has been overwhelming and we haven’t really faced any difficulties as yet. I think that is because our product speaks for itself. Even though we haven’t really gone out and marketed Kit & Kaboodle because we wanted to enter the market gradually, we have got an incredible response and our sales have been increasing progressively. Hence, we are very satisfied.

What motivates you?

As an interior designer what motivates me the most is the final result. To start off a project with a sketch and see it come to life. Hence, creating peace and balance is the biggest motivation for me.

If there is any piece in your portfolio that you are proud of?

I think if you ask any interior architect to choose it’s like choosing one of your children above the other. Every project that you work on has a particular story and it has its own limitations and advantages so it’s very difficult to say that this was the best thing or this is my favorite. The whole concept of Kit & Kaboodle is probably the thing I am most proud of because we have designed and delivered a project without any budget limitations and it’s incredible! Kit & Kaboodle is definitely on the top of my portfolio list. Other than that I have been working on many different things over the years and soon you’ll see some beautiful houses in Lahore pop up with the Kit & Kaboodle’s brand on it.

*ABOUT ME

Is there any interior style you favor or dislike?

As a Scandinavian I obviously have a very strong connection to the Scandinavian’s style which is very bare and focuses on straight lines. But then I have also spent a lot of time in the Middle East where things are more extravagant so I can’t really say that there is something I dislike because as long as you use it in the right way, it’s good. Mixing and matching in way that modern meets the classical and Scandinavian meets Arabian style is what has to be done but finding that perfect balance is very important. If I were to describe the style that I prefer it would be clean elegance with a touch of glam which is commonly found in the interiors that I design.

How do you keep up with industry changes?

Well this is the secret of a successful business. I can say traveling abroad and meeting all brands frequently is probably one part of this secret and the other part is always being 10 steps ahead of your competition which we promise we will always be!

Imagine your client wants you to design a room that is visually pleasing but not practical, how would you react?

I don’t think there is a thing. If it’s not practical it won’t be pleasing either. Like if you wanted to place a sofa that is blocking the main entrance, I mean that’s very impractical and it wouldn’t be that visually pleasing either. When you see a good interior it’s like watching a good movie. It is all a combination of visually pleasing, practical and comfortable that actually works. So all those boxes need to be ticked in order for it to be a successful project.

Home décor trends for next year I know that we are moving from less colors to more colors and we also want to use darker shades on our walls rather than just playing with whites or beiges. We want to try and experiment with a bit more colors and deeper tones.

Also the metallic trends will still be there, it will be a lot of gold with elements like rose gold, matt nickel and marble.

In fabrics, deep hues in velvet are very much in trend. Rich luxury feel is what will be the real deal.

Tell us about the Kit & Kaboodle team Kamran and I are the owners. In the company I am the vice president and the creative director while Kamran is the President. Then we have an amazing management team which helps us with everything. We have a competent design division which we are also looking to expand.

We have excellent VMs (visual merchandiser) that helps us keep the display in the showroom looking impeccable at all times. We have a sales department that is continuously growing and then we have our very humble supporting staff in our showroom which will cater to all your needs.

To be honest we need everyone in this team in order to be successful. Everything, from the designer display to the product packaging has to be on point. It’s all a part of the Kit & Kaboodle experience and we are constantly working to fine tune so we can offer the very best.

Next for Kit & Kaboodle Next for Kit & Kaboodle, we want to open one more store which will serve as a special designer’s showroom. We are also looking for expanding to other cities of Pakistan and we are currently working on a plan to introduce Kit & Kaboodle in a very prominent and exciting city abroad. It’s all in the pipeline but we don’t want to confirm anything as yet.

However, one thing which is definite is that we aren’t going to stop on MM Alam Road and this is just the beginning!
