unjAb chief minister usman buzdar Wednesday said that 15 officials had been removed from their positions in line with recommendations of the inquiry committee probing the murree tragedy, wherein 23 people had lost their lives after their cars were stranded in a snowstorm in the resort town of murree earlier this month. Addressing a press conference, buzdar said the officials who had been removed from their positions included rawalpindi commissioner, whose services were kept at the federal government’s disposal and their suspension was recommended. though the chief minister didn’t mention names of the officers, sources have informed pakistan today that the removed officers included commissioner rawalpindi division Gulzar shah, deputy commissioner rawalpindi muhammad Ali, cpo rawalpindi sajid Kiyani, Asp murree Ahmed shah and cto rawalpindi taimoor

sion and disciplinary action against him. the chief minister said directives had been issued for removing the murree assistant superintendent of police from his position, surrendering his services to the federal government, recommending suspension and disciplinary action against the official. “the punjab government has fulfilled the promise it made regarding the incident’s investigation,” buzdar said. ReCommendations of inquiRy Committee: punjab government implemented all recommendations of probe committee in letter and spirit. the inquiry report submitted by the committee with the punjab government had recommended suspension and disciplinary proceedings against commissioner rawalpindi division Gulzar shah, deputy commissioner rawalpindi muhammad Ali, cpo rawalpindi sajid Kiyani, Asp murree Ahmed shah and cto rawalpindi taimoor Khan. besides, the report proposed suspension and disciplinary proceedings against Assistant commissioner murree umer maqbool, dsp traffic Amjad satti, se Highways rawalpindi tahir mehmood, Xen Highways rawalpindi rao tahir, Xen Highways mechanical rawalpindi saad salamat raja, sdo Highway murree ezza saleha, dfo murree Amir sohail, district emergency officer murree Abdur rehman, incharge murree engr. Hamza Ali, and director pdmA tariq faooka. the report pointed out serious lapses and failures on part of the above officers. “failure of risk assessment and inadequate transmission of warning to concerned officials through right channels and to the right quarters; lack of leadership at all levels — divisional, district and tehsil by administration which was reflected in poor planning, skewed risk assessment and suboptimal implementation; failure to set up a proper control room at the district level in murree with representatives from all the relevant federal and provincial entities; almost no follow-up to ensure the deployment of assets such as snow removal machinery and necessary verifications of prior actions,” the inquiry report maintained.

Parliamentary panel approves Justice ayesha’s elevation to sC parliamentary committee on judges Appointment has approved the nomination of lahore High court’s (lHc) justice Ayesha malik as a judge of the supreme court. As per sources, the decision was made in light of justice Ayesha’s gender. However, the official insisted that the seniority principle will be adhered to in the future. earlier on january 6, the judicial commission of pakistan (jcp) approved with a vote of five to four the nomination of justice Ayesha malik to the supreme court. cj Gulzar, justice umar Ata bandial, retired judge sarmad jalal osmani, Attorney General for pakistan Khalid jawed Khan and law minister dr farogh naseem had endorsed her name for appointment as a supreme court judge, whereas justice Qazi faez isa, justice maqbool baqar, justice sardar tariq masood and pbc representative Akhtar Hussain had opposed her nomination. the opposing four members had insisted that criteria should be evolved for the appointment of superior court judges first, adding that the seniority principle should be followed for the appointment of sc judges. she will be the first female supreme court judge in the judicial history of pakistan. justice Ayesha, number four on the lHc judges seniority list, became

a judge in march 2012. she will now work as a supreme court judge until june 2031. she could also become the cjp after the retirement of justice Yahya Afridi in january 2030. the committee did not approve the appointment of three district and sessions judges to the peshawar High court (pHc) as additional judges. the appointment of fazal subhan, shahid Khan, and dr Khurshid iqbal was not approved as it violated the seniority principle. it was learned that the committee sent their names back to the jcp for reconsideration because of the seniority issue. the panel, however, approved the names of three lawyers for their appointment as the pHc judges. their names are Kamran Hayat miankhel, muhammad ijaz Khan, and muhammad faheem Wali. in its last meeting, the jcp had approved six names for the appointment as additional judges of peshawar High court (pHc). during the meeting, it was learned that three senior-most district and sessions judges of Khyber pakhtunkhwa were ignored during the meeting. justice maqbool baqar and justice sardar tariq masood had questioned the nominations of district and sessions judges as they were nominated against the seniority principle.
