Pakistan criticises Modi for ‘distorting history’ in tweets about Partition 10 killed, several injured in explosion in Karachi

akistan on saturday criticised Prime Minister narendra Modi for his tweets regarding partition of the indian subcontinent and said no modern state is so much in contradiction with itself as the indian state. Earlier in his tweets, the indian prime minister had made the controversial announcement. “Partition’s pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th august will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day,” Modi wrote in a tweet. “May [this day] keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of

social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment,” he added. Responding to the tweets, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, in a statement, termed Modi’s move “a political and publicity stunt”, saying that “no modern state is so much in contradiction with itself as the indian state – the so-called ‘largest democracy’.” He said, “it is shameful that the practitioners of ‘Hindutva’ ideology, and purveyors of hate and violence, would so hypocritically and one-sidedly invoke the tragic events and mass migration that occurred in the wake of independence in 1947. at least 10 people died while several others were injured due to an explosion inside a truck in karachi’s Mawach Goth area on saturday, Dawn reported. senior superintendent of Police Fida Husain Janwari told Dawn that a cylinder explosion took place inside a “mini truck” after the driver picked up a family, including women, from Pareeshan Chowk in Baldia. Deputy inspector General south Javed akbar Riaz said that according to initial reports, the Hyundai truck was carrying 20-25 people when the explosion occurred. He said that the passengers were returning home after attending a marriage ceremony. He said that the bomb disposal squad had been called in to confirm the nature of the blast. On the other hand, the Edhi Foundation spokesperson said that the explosion was occurred at a petrol pump near Mawach Goth and seven bodies were shifted to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital by the officials. another official from Chippa rescue service said that they took three more bodies from the spot, bringing the total death toll to 10.

Pakistan on saturday marked the 75th anniversary of its creation and independence from Britain with a series of celebrations and military ceremonies. at dawn, a 31-gun salute in islamabad marked the start of festivities to commemorate august 14 1947, the day colonial rule ended. in an occasion filled with military pomp, cadets changed the guard at the domed mausoleum of the founding father, Mohammed ali Jinnah, in karachi. Overnight, revellers poured onto streets throughout the country despite monsoon rains, waving the olive green and white flag and setting off firecrackers. the chief feature of the celebrations was a national flag hoisting ceremony at the President House in islamabad attended by President Dr arif alvi, among others, Radio Pakistan reported. similar flag hoisting ceremonies were also held at provincial, divisional and district headquarters-level across the country. Buildings, streets, and markets were illuminated to mark the event.
